Anyone read something that helped define your life? For me it was Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" plus Thoreau's essay on "Economy". Pirsig taught me about quality and Thoreau about frugality. Both helped me understand what is really important in life.

Yes, the Bible. It's amazing that God's rules for life are contained in ten simple Commandments...and our Constitution and Bill of Rights will fit in your breast pocket. Just sayin'. Add those to my list.

The Revolution: A Manifesto by Ron Paul. Although it is a short book, it was my first time I read something about personal liberty and freedom, economic freedom, and sound money. I recommend this book to everyone I talk to for more than an hour.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. A short novel about following ones dreams.

Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War by Robert Coram. Picked this one almost by accident. I had grabbed this one for my younger brother who was into fighter jets and ended up reading this fascinating biography about a complex warrior who thought outside the box. This book introduced meet me to the OODA loop concept.

Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff: A Libertarian Manifesto by Matt Kibbe. Another good book examining the philosophy of personal responsibility and freedom.

I addition to one standout obvious, the Bible as part of my childhood Christian indoctrination, my answer is many. I'm an avid reader and have been all my life, so my defining book inputs have been plentiful and varied.

The Holy Bible and the Blue Jackets Manual. Both saw me through a lot of scrapes.

The Bible, but there's a secret to how to open up the wisdom therein: Humility and repentance.

When I was younger, I tried reading the Bible several times. It never made sense, it never spoke to me. It took almost 20 years of God softening up my heart before I was ready to say, "Yes, I recognize I can't do it my way."

Part of not doing it my way was recognizing sin is destructive and that for me to be in right relationship with Father God, I had to turn from that sin and trust Jesus' atoning work to cover my sin and His Holy Spirit to deliver me from the power of that sin. And He did.

Then, when I opened up the Bible, it has become like actually reading a living Word. It makes sense now, too.

Studying the Bible, coupled with sincere, daily prayer, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit has breathed life into this vessel that for so many years was literally walking dead. Thanks to Jesus for that!
