Man kills armadillo, but ricochet gunshot hits mother-in-law Posted: Apr 14, 2015 10:24 AM CDT Updated: Apr 14, 2015 10:25 AM CDT

LEESBURG, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a south Georgia man shot an armadillo, but ended up accidentally wounding his mother-in-law when the bullet ricocheted off the mammal known for its hard shell.
Lee County Sheriff's deputies tell WALB-TV that 54-year-old Larry McElroy fired his 9 mm pistol at the armadillo Sunday night.

Deputies say the bullet killed the armadillo, but bounced off the animal, hit a fence, traveled through the back door of the mother-in-law's mobile home and the recliner in which she was sitting, striking her in the back.
McElroy's 74-year-old mother-in-law, Carol Johnson, suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. Lee County sheriff's investigator Bill Smith said she was walking around and talking afterward.

Lee County Sherriff's deputies say McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home when he shot the armadillo.

I'm appalled at the absurdity of this story and the fact that Fox News chose to pick it up off the AP.
C'MON!! Kill an armadillo @ 100yds with a 9mm pistol, but the bullet didn't even penetrate the shell. AND it still had enough momentum to ricochet off the animal, a fence, penetrate a door and a reclining chair?

I think Mr McElroy shot his mother-in-law and the local sheriff's dept are close friends of his!!!

That sounds more like it. If the bullet bounced off the shell, how did it kill it? Too many things don't make sense in that story.

Sounds more like he shot his mother-in-law and accidentally killed an armadillo. :)

Said he was a 100 yards from the house, not a hundred yards from the armadilo?

What did the armadilo do that deserved it to be shot.

I'd like to get me one of them shells, rumor has it it works better than a tinfoil hat. I think you can wear it on an airplane too, gets through the metal detector, unless of course it's been shot and has a bullet lodged in it.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me. Get rid of an armadillo AND be a pain in the ... to your MIL!

Had a rat make a furtive move out in the barn over the weekend. Kaablammed him big time.

Ya think 45acp is overkill for a rat even if it was being a rat?

I was in Manila Philippines and a rat very very close to that size climbed up the stairs when all the lights were on and people were around. It was so big it couldn't run and headed straight for the kitchen. I think it had been in that kitchen before. It was as big as a large cat.

It would have took a .45 for sure to put it down.
