Got a little bit of money burning a hole in my pocket, allocated for some .44special. But it's not to be found locally. I guess I'll have to go online. Meanwhile, searching is a good excuse to peruse the used gun shelves. And today I came home with this:

Iver Johnson Cadet 55-SA in .22. It test fires fine and is clean as a whistle. Kinda purdy too IMHO.

P.S. Apologies for the usual crappy pic. I think the sun is forecast to come out sometime in June...

Thanks for the tips. As soon as I'm done using it as an excuse to go gun shopping, I'll order some up. ;)

Its not the crappy picture, but the closed action with the hammer back in the picture that scares the hell out of me, for the sake of newbies who need to have good example set for them.

That's the stinker with 44 Special.
Hard to find and usually expensive.
I beat the crap out of my S&W 629-2 Mountain Gun with full power 240 gr magnums.
Finally had to have the cylinder tightened - LOL!
Now I only run Specials in the big boy.

Self Defense I like 200 gr Speer GDHP Short Barrel.

My .44mag is a Super Blackhawk...more concerned about beating the crap outta me than the gun. Seriously, it would be nice if I could find some plinking ammo. One LGS said the factories tend to run in large batches. So just hang on and it will come around.

The .44 Special is one of my favorite cartridges. I reload and cast bullets for it so I seldom need to purchase cartridges. Once set up to reload the .44 Special, no more equipment is needed to also reload the .44 Magnum. Any once-fired .44 Special cases found on the ground at my local range goes home with me. If you're NOT a reloader, I would suggest you give it some thought otherwise, best wishes on finding your ammunition online.

I can usually find it at Cabelas or Gander Mtn. It's expensive. But I don't need to practice much with it. I shoot light target loads out of my 6" 629 Classic. It's not as hard on it. (or me). I only have dies for 44 and 45. But I like to get my SD loads from a well known manufacturer. For some reason putting a hot .44 special load in a magnum case is more accurate than from a .44 special case not loaded quite as hot. That 629 will shoot a tighter group at about 75 yards or so than an AK47. Using a pistol rest of course. And a rifle rest.

for about 200 bucks you can get a Lee Hand Press, dies, digital scale and an inexpensive digital micrometer and reload those .44's for less than 15 bucks a box. My instant love for a Ruger SP101 in .357 mag too me directly into reloading a bit over 4 yrs ago, and I haven't bought a single factory round since then (and the SP gets a lot of range time). Traded for a Super RedHawk in .44 mag the next year and ordered dies the same day ..... the previous owner gave me a full box of Fiocci in the trade and that's the only factory ammo it's had in the last 3+ years .... and it gets a lot of range time. A couple of years ago I bought a Rossi R92 20" lever gun in .44 mag ..... it's first 5 rounds were the remainder of the box of Fiocci factory rounds. From my notes, I've shot somewhere around 1500 .44 mag rounds in the last 3 years from mild to wild, average cost around 15 bucks per box (and I can't even begin to count the .357 rounds, .38 spl, 9mm, .45 acp, .30-30 ...)

The magnums (and yes, even .44 spl) were the only reason I took up reloading, even though in being on the "small scale". I couldn't afford to buy, much less search for, the ammunition. I now have a much greater appreciation for my firearms and don't have to worry about paying outrageous prices for scarce ammunition ..... although you do have to scramble a bit to find powder and primers occasionally.

What does a box of range quality .44 spl cost now?

Cool looking revolver, but I bet it has about a 12-15 lb double-action trigger pull.

Yeah :D But it's still fun to shoot. Actually a challenge to overcome that trigger pull. Thanks!

Thanks JD, you've been prodding me for a long while to begin reloading and you are right...especially given the cost of .38spl, .357, .44spl and .44mag. One of these days I'll quit dragging my feet. Thanks!
