I received this email and wanted to share it.
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to new gun control laws. I appreciate hearing your views on this critical issue and I apologize for any delay in my response.
As you know, Congress has debated a wide range of bills related to gun ownership and usage over the years, particularly in light of the numerous recent mass shootings. Proponents of stronger gun control measures argue that such laws would make it more difficult for criminals to acquire weapons that enable criminal activity and mass shootings. Opponents worry that law-abiding citizens would face unreasonable obstacles when trying to obtain a gun and that gun control laws may be inconsistent with their constitutionally-protected rights.
This is a complex issue that evokes passionate views from supporters and critics alike, especially in the aftermath of the heinous attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. I believe that Congress must proceed carefully so that we do not impede the rights of millions of responsible law-abiding gun owners. However, we would also be derelict in our duty to the American people if access to deadly weapons were to go completely unregulated. While I agree that violence would not end if guns were more restricted, we should all should agree that it makes sense to try to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals while we uphold the right to bear arms contained in the Second Amendment.
We must have an open debate about all the options that could effectively reduce the senseless loss of life from gun violence. That means looking at improving mental health, strengthening school safety and security, and other social services to ensure that individuals who contemplate such heinous acts could get the help they need. As Congress considers proposals to balance all of these interests, please know that I will be certain to keep your views in mind when I cast my votes.
My response was that gun control does not work, it doesn't work in Washington D.C., nor in Chicago. All it does is disarm law abiding citizens. If the teachers at Sandy Hook had guns, how far would that of gone on? Any politician voting for gun control will not receive my support.
