loaded the 2 mags with Winchester 230gr. "service grade" fmj. loaded the gun, round in chamber, decocked, got on target and let #1 go using the smooth but long Ruger DA trigger. ok, that worked. 7 more in SA. oh, yes, it's a .45. big, fills my hand, heavy, little recoil. if I could see the tiny 3 dots it's probably accurate-- I just look over the top of the slide and guesstamate, eh, close enough for Missouri. (my P89 in 9mm is not this much fun).
gun came from a guy I met online, it was his first pistol, bought for him by an uncle for his high school graduation in 2004, he's an XD fan now. go figure.
for another $700-$800 I could have got a 1911 or a Sig 220.

Gotta admit it's kinda a neat looking thing. Big and heavy and .45 is a fun to shoot combination.

It looks big and heavy, but it's the size of a 1911 Commander and roughly the same weight I think. Alloy frame, well balanced.

The frame is wide in the area of the rails, but the grip is "normal" size. If they'd widened the grip a little they could probably have fit 10 rounds in the magazine. As an 8+1 pistol, it never had much advantage over its competition, but it's a damn fine gun in its own right.

I rented a bunch of .45s, compared them to the .45s I own, and the P90 was easily my favorite to shoot. I like a lot of the others, such as the HK45, M&P, and such, but the Ruger just floats my boat.

Congrats on the P90:)
I put Meprolight sights on mine. I find them an improvement over the OEM sights:

so if your inspired by this P-series love, search the hockshops, mom&pop gun stores and you'll probably find one($250-$400). google "Ruger P-series and see the variations. P-85,89,90,95,345 etc. some are DC for decocker only. the early ones are all metal. the later ones are Ruger-Plastic (not to be confused with later poly guns), look inside one of the later plastic lower P-series-- there's no silly metal rails, the slide and lower work together. after a gazillion rounds there's no wear or failures. when your slapping a bad guy around the later plastic P-series makes more of a "thud/thunk" noise, the early all metal guns have more of a "ting". good luck. have fun.

...

I guess it depends on our definitions of "big and heavy". ^^^ is big and heavy by my definition but that's not a bad thing. :D They can be great shooters!

Compared to a Kahr polymer pistol...

ok, to me, in a gun that weighs 32oz. empty-- 9mm is nothing, .40 is kind of zippy/flippy, .45 is kind of pushy. I'll take the heavy, low speed push from a .45acp over a .40 any day. for cheap, all day shooting it's 9mm. now, if I'm going to a gun fight, do I take the P-89(9mm, 16 rounds)or the P-90(.45acp, 9 rounds)? how about the P-89 on me and the P-90 in the console of the truck? oh, and I always have my trusty Kel-Tec P-32 on me (reaching into a shirt pocket looks like going for cigarettes.) hehehehee.

I had a P90 several years ago. Great shooter, just never felt right in my paw. Fellow that got it from me, still has it and shoots it all the time.

A friend has the P89 and another friend several wheel guns. He thinks GP100 hung the moon :-). My very first pistol was a P345 and I'll probably be using it at the range until I go meet Jesus face to face. It was just a mite too big for CC so after 5 years I bought the PM45. So both my .45s start with P. Maybe someday I'll get an H&K. They start with P also :-)

Muy buena pistola compadre!!!!! I had 2 at one time. Only got one P-90 now and a P-89 in 9 mil to go with it. I have small hands, so I have to turn my right hand on the grip a bit to reach the trigger. They always go boom. My CW 45 is alot smaller and has a better DA trigger, but I really like the big Rugers.

The P-90 above with some Hoquges on it IIRC. The P89 below. It's stock.

as some of the LE officers who carried these P-series Rugers will tell you, the first (double action) shot was a "warning shot", the next shots fired in single action was business. if you run out of ammo this gun also makes a fine hammer/club.
I have the P-89 and P-90, regard both as fine, very reliable, all metal duty pistols. great for the range and around the house. for another $900 you can have an HK45, but that's polymer. now S&W made some nice all metal 9's and 45's.

I always thought the factory grips sucked for looks. Those Hogues are super ni e grips, IMO certainly would enhance the sale of the gun to. Just sayin

After seeing (here (http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=88410)) how it was done on a P89, I thought I would try a P95 trigger on my P90. This might not be a big deal for many, but it does reduce the "reach" to the trigger face a slight amount and I like the look a lot more than that with the stock trigger.

opps, correction, the P-series grips mentioned above are Uncle Mike's #59503. I have the big rubber Hogue wrap around grips on the P-89, fine for target shooting. the Uncle Mike's on the P90 are thinner rubber 2 piece grips that, I think, are better for carry.

I wanted to get the Hogue wood grips for my P-guns but the factory grips don't bother me at all. No reason to spend $60 just to look cooler.

Just to look cooler? Dude, that's everything. Looking cool is job one! He who dies looking coolest wins!

To be totally straightforward, I couldn't find the darker wood color, they only have the lighter woods, and I like the look of the darker woods. Plus, sixty bucks feels like a LOT to spend for a set of clogs. I'd rather spend that on ammo!

Now, my 1911s have gotten "spoiled" as it's been hard to find grips that feel just right. I've spent way more than sixty bucks in that endless quest.

JohnR,
spend the money on some tools and that "how-to" video on making grips. see, now your a grip maker. if you stay with motifs like crucifixes or all seeing eyes, I'm sure it could be a hobby that pays for itself. (if you could get the parts to make laser grips, that could help some of the old, half blind guys get on target.)

JohnR

Meh, I'll leave that to Bawanna. I've had plenty of other money-pit hobbies over the years, don't need another.

JohnR,
speaking of grips, ya still got that inner tube grip cover on the CM9? that's the way it came to me. I picked it up and for such a small gun, I thought it felt pretty good, better than stock.
was it you or somebody else that said they had a 1911 from Rock Island(Armscor)? if it was you, what do you think? buy another one or save up for a Ruger?

JohnR

I swapped the inner tube for a different piece of rubber tubing I got at an industrial supply place. It's a little thicker and has some texture to it.

I have a Citadel (by Armscor) officer size. I'd have another. But if I get another 1911 I'd get the Auto Ordnance WWII replica.

I like that Auto-Ord GI model (black, wood grips, no stupid name on the slide.) I like to shoot .45acp out of a 40oz. or fatter gun. I like my P-90 and I'm looking at the Armscor double stack.
(a guy I see at the range once and awhile wanted a 1911 in 9mm for target plinking, he went with an Armscor. he did a little work on the inside and got a trigger he likes. he says it works for him.)
