Need opinions on purchasing a new to me Kahr. Which is the better deal between a MK9 used in "Very Good" condition for $400 (Serial#: GC7XXX) vs a used, but unfired K9 for $500. Both have night sights....
Anyone know how old the MK9 is based on the serial? This will be my first Kahr, so I know very little compared to other manufactures. Is there anything I should look out for while inspecting these pistols?
Kahr MK9 9x19 Stainless All Metal Pocket Pistol with 2 mags, 1 6-round and 1 7-round with extension. This American made heavy little pocket pistol is USE but is in VERY GOOD to Excellent condition showing little or no use marks. It comes in its original box.

Kahr K-9 as new in original box with 3 mags, nite-sights. Bought last year and put in the safe...never even carried.

I would negotiate the K9 down a bit if you can. If you can't, then the MK9 is a steal at that price if it's as clean as they say. I've owned both, and prefer the K9 just because it fits my hand better. I found the MK9 too heavy for pocket carry (my CM9 is perfect for that). Whichever you end up with will serve you well. Good luck!

What's the going rate on used K9s? IYHO, $500 is too much?

They both appear to be good deals at those prices. I'm an MK fan so the decision would be easy for me. But there are times when I think a K9 for the belt PLUS a CM9 for the pocket makes the best sense.
I took a quick glance at the following thread and it looks like that MK9 was produced sometime after 2008. But the list stops there. An email to Kahr could date it precisely. FYI - the expected life of those night sight lamps is approx 12 years. http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?14745-Kahr-Serial-Number-History-by-WIG19-on-GlockTalk
I wouldn't be too concerned with the actual age of any Kahr. If they are taken care of, they will last lifetimes. It's usually difficult to tell the difference between a rarely fired example and one that was fired a lot.
Enjoy!

^^^ in your first MK9 pic it looks like the mag is not seated fully? The gap seems bigger than usual. The second pic looks better but you might want to check that out.

I didn't notice that. Thanks.

From the photo of the K9 it seems to be a three magazine set which would make it a new gun, made within the past couple of years. $500 would be a good price. I'd buy it over the MK9 because IMHO neither are pocket gun and one carries as well as the other but the K9 is a bit nicer to shoot. A new K9 should also have an elite trigger as standard, a good feature to have.

I carry my MK9 in my front pocket every day. I'm getting older, so I wear suspenders. More people should, so I don't have to look at the crack of their arse. Suspenders help you carry just about anything you want, with ease. You younger guys will appreciate this as you get older.:p Since I already have an MK, I'd have to say the K9.......looks good, has night sights, and three mags.
K9's a length and height bigger gun. Otherwise pretty much the same so I guess it's just what works better for you. I have both, plus a PM9. For me, the MK9 is a tweener that generally sees only desk drawer/car console duty.

You carry your K9 more than the MK9?

$500 is a good price for an unfired K9 with 3 mags, but still try to get them to come down some. I would go with the K9 due to the fact you would be able to get a better firing grip faster during the draw, the longer barrel would give better ammo performance, and you should be able to shoot it faster when you run it. The K9 is still a small pistol. IMO, the K9 is as small and light as it can be and still shoot as well as a full size pistol, and that could save your life.

I went with the K9. I paid asking price of $500. I looked up the MSRP which was $1009, retail was $700, and others in armlist and this site seemed to be asking $500 for MK9s and K9.

I think you got a good deal for an unfired K9. I could not find a used one locally. I found a NIB K9 with night sights for $599.99 and bought it. A few days later in another LGS, I saw a NIB K9 with standard sights for $580, so it looks like I got a good deal for my city. Mine had sat at the distributors for two years and the distributor discounted it. The LGS passed the savings along. A K9 with night sites tend to sell for about $100 more than one with standard sights. BTW, Massad Ayoob thinks very highly of the K9, and they are also popular at Gunsite.

Yeah, for some reason they seem to sit a while. I bought my NIB MK40N in Jan. 2011 for $569 from a GS in MA. I checked with Kahr and it was built on Feb. 29, 2008. At that point I knew I had bought a "keeper" because my birthday is Feb. 29th. The pistol has since proved itself with its great shootability and ease of carry.

I hope it stays that way. I bought it from this guy. (http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?26724-SOLD-Kahr-k-9-as-new-unfired-uncarried-nite-sites-holster) No one on this forum even showed interest in it as well as on Armslist. Seems like thanks to the lack of interest, he dropped the price to $500. I drove out, met him in person, and did a f2f sale. I was extremely sceptical till the bitter end (too good to be true). Got a brand new gun that retails online for $700-$840 and a brand new Tucker Gun Leather holster (http://www.tuckergunleather.com/) (worth about another $100) for $500 even. I just don't get or understand the lack of interest in the MK9 and K9... Can't be because of weight when other carry all steel Sigs, revolvers, and 1911s...
Now I just picked up a brand new CT laser grip on ebay for $150 when the seller paid well over $200 thanks to absolutely no one else bidding on it. :D

I was thinking about picking that one up too, but I'm a bit leery about the condition it's really in. What about the frame makes it look much older?

I was able to pick up my PM45 from my LGS on-line for the MK9 price. It was 2 years old and probably had 2 mags through it. Had that owner read this forum I probably wouldn't have it. It had the 3rd round feed ramp issue. Once I polished it out it's unflinching and unfailing. I really like it. It is accurate and controllable. I chose .45 ACP when I began shooting at age 62. The Kahr is my second centerfire pistol.

Nice. Seems like it's easy to find great deals on like new used Kahrs despite them having a high MSRP.

Look at the MK and compare it to the K. Notice how one frame is flat sided and the other has a uumm recess... scallop.. whatever you want to call it. The newer models have that "recess".
Had I the cash I would have purchased both of them.
