Took the wife out to the range, to shoot her newly acquired SP101. We shot 150 rds. of 38 special, and 50 rds. of 357. I have to admit, she shot it better than me...........a lot better than me. We have a winner. I guess that extra smithing we had done, paid off. She was putting them in a 4" circle at 7 yds. I was proud of her. Then I let her shoot my HK P2000sk. Not the same results unfortunately. She doesn't like the .40 cal " flippyness". I, on the other hand love .40 cal, and I shot the Ruger better with .357 than .38. I seem to shoot better with higher recoil/caliber firearms. I don't know if this is a norm. Anybody else shoot larger calibers better???????????????

Not me!

Glad to hear she likes the revolver. I love my SP101 3 inch but I don't shoot it as well as your wife.

Good to hear! I love the 3" SP101. A really good carry load is Golden Saber 125 grain .357 mid-range magnums. There are not as powerful as full magnums. They exit the 3" barrel at about 1180 fps, which puts them in the 9mm +P territory. They are easily controlled from the little Rugar and more effective that any +P .38. Another really good mid-range .357 is the 125 g Gold Dot, which may be a better round. The Golden Saber has been known to suffer from jacket seperation on occasion. Mid range magnums cost about $1 per round, about the same as good 9mm SD ammo, but range ammo, even .38 Special, tend to be more expensive than 9mm more often. That is one of the reasons I traded my SP 101 for a Kahr K9, but I will buy another SP 101. They are just too much fun.

I do love my 3" SP101. In the 4-5 years I've had it there's been a few thousand rounds (all homebrew reloads but maybe 100 factory rounds) put down range, and dry fired almost as much. The more it's worked the smoother it gets. Although a bit different in "feel", it's as smooth as any S&W I've ever owned. I've had quite an assortment of Ruger firearms in the last 50 years, but this SP is my all time favorite.

It's good to hear of a lady with such good taste .... and skill. :)

I'm wondering if that's a byproduct of those who shoot a lot of 40cal. I too shoot .40 and hotter 9mm more accurately than other rounds. My GP is a 4 inch and the only revolver I regularly shoot .357 thru. But it's easy and accurate. Love that gun.

I have a Ruger Single Seven, that shoots .32acp, .32 S&W short, .32 S&W long, .32 H&R and .327mag. my favorite for plinking is the .32 S&W long(Fiocchi makes a nice 97 gr. FMJ). the Federal 100gr. .327 mag (1500fps, 500 ft/lbs) is definitely a magnum round, best to have ear plugs and cans on if your shooting them indoors. my latest toy is a .45acp Ruger P-90, big enough and heavy enough to make shooting .45acp a joy. love the torque.
glad to hear your wife is liking the SP101. is she shooting that SA or DA, or both? (some people prefer to run a revolver SA, which is ok. for defensive shooting use 2 hands and run the hammer with the weak hand thumb. Ruger has a training video about that.)

If it has a hammer I single action it every time. I was born a 100 years too late I think.
Course several folks have pointed out that had I been born in my proper time, I'd already be dead and gone.

Hmmm, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

sometimes I think I died in the mid 1930's after a long, happy life .... and just been a ghost for the last 80 years.

That's why I had the smithing done on it, and he did a fine job. She shoots DA all of the time. He's got that trigger so smooth. I did the spring changes, hammer spring and trigger spring, and the smith did the buff and shim. I swear without exaggeration, with the spring changes, that the SA pull is at about 2 lbs. The small grip fits her hand perfectly. I'm so used to shooting the semi's(started on revolvers) I had a hard time with the sights on the revolver. No matter, it's her firearm, and I'm happy I steered her in the right direction, for her. Now I fear her..................:)
