View Full Version : 10mm anyone?

I don't know why but I've been really interested in 10mm lately and looking into getting a 10mm pistol. I've been looking at the glock 29. Does anyone own or shoot any 10mm guns? The thing that puts me off is not the recoil but the freaking price for one box of ammo is around $35. That's insane! What's the cheapest price anyone has found for a box of 50 "Plinking" rounds? I'd love to start reloading one day but that won't be happening anytime soon.

$35!!....geeze, just a few months back....10mm was the only thing you could find on the shelf....lots and lots of it. I don't remember prices, but it didn't even sell during the ammo shortage.
There is a reason? -I don't know what, but it is not a popular round at all.

Edit: Here you go....250 rounds for $100 - about $20 per box. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AMM-5870

Don't know where you stay GA_Sheepdog-, but there is a good little ammo stop west of Atlanta in Villa Rica....Georgia Arms. They manufacture ammo and also reload- they have 10mm for $22.
I have shot up a bunch of their 9mm, and thought it to be good stuff.

You may want to also visit - http://ammoseek.com/ ..........they list ammo sales from different distributors. Sometimes if you order 10 or more boxes- you get free shipping.
I recently had premium 380 jhp delivered to my front door for about $19 per box, and premium jhp 9mm for $16. Both were less than half the shelf price locally at Academy and GM.

Sweet thank you!!! I actually live in Newnan which is about 30 to 40 minutes from villa rica. Now I don't feel so hopeless about getting a 10mm pistol. Around $20 a box is close to .380 prices and that's very doable. From what I gather 10mm is not a very popular round but has a "Cult" following because of to its power and velocity. A lot of people don't like it due to the perception of having a lot of recoil. I've never shot one and it would probably be good for me to shoot one before I buy one first. People that own 10mm say the recoil is very managable and is close to 45.

Our honorable administrator John is/was a devout 10mm fan. Undoubtedly a wealth of information to be tapped into.

I think the deal with the 10mm not being more popular is the round was ahead of the platform curve. It's like a magnum and the guns chambered for it when new took a real beating.

The FBI and others thought it was just too hot so they detuned it and gave us the 40.

With todays better materials and better technology they seem to do fine and given the chance could take off in the popularity arena but sadly most gun calibers that don't take off from the get go seldom get a second chance.

The 38 Super is a case in point. Overall it is IMHO a better self defense round than a 10mm for many reasons but it is also a nearly extinct caliber.

Newnan Ga!.......been through there a few times years back. There was a BBQ joint there that had some pretty good pig.

But on Georgia Arms......those guys make some first class ammo. Their re-man stuff is good, I never had an issue with it. They used to make Gold Dots, now they call them Bonded Unicore.... that is premium SD stuff at reasonable prices.
When you see $27 on a box of 9mm Bonded Unicore jhp...and think its high....remember its 50 rounds!....not 20 or 25.

I think your talking about Spraybarry's? Yeah it's pretty good stuff.

I was looking at 10mm SD ammo at Georgia arms. One of the types give it around 1375 Fps. That's pretty good and seems like a full powered load and not an underpowered 40 cal type that other companies make. I think Doubletap and buffalo bore make one of the best full powered rounds for 10mm.

I ccw a glock 19 and of course my cw380. I was wondering if the glock 29 would fit in the same crossbreed holster as the 19. I know the slide is a little thicker then the 19 but the grip length is shortened. Having a slimmer frame is always better for iwb but I've never had a problem with the thickness of the 19 when carrying. I just don't like how far the grip sticks out and pokes out on my shirt. I had a CW 45 and it was comfortable but the grip stuck out just as far as the 19 does.

I long for another 10mm.

My first was a converted 38Super, that I converted myself (opened breech, reworked extractors etc). I got one of the production overrun Bar-Sto barrels that they did up for Colt, as prototype barrels, during the development of the Delta Elite. First magazines were Wilson 45, which just barely worked with 10mm. Loading... worked up the 38Super load of Blue Dot.

When magazines were available from Colt, as well as the ammo available from sources other than Norma, we had some good chrono data, and determined that around 5-1/2 ounces needed to be added to a 38Super slide in order to achieve the same slide velocity as a 38Super or 45acp. I did that by adding a Wilson "bushing comp" which weighed.... 5-1/2 ounces! Also bushed the bushing comp's end down to just over .40 cal in an effort to hold back gas, which it did nicely.

The 10mm is far far beyond any .38 Super. It is just shy of a 41 magnum.

Diameter .400 vs .355 for the 38 Super. Bullet weights of 180 grains or more... 38 Super don't do that. Velocity... about the same, or a little more even. It is one heck of a round of ammo. Use GOOD ear protection!

My 10mm top end got given to my old pal Ed W. who has a multi caliber set, based on one frame. He's got .22, 38Super, 9mm, 10mm and 45 that all shoot on the same frame. He was a good bud, good employer and boss, and he deserved it, and I was happy to give it to him.

One day... I'll find a Delta stainless floating about and snag it.

The FBI and others thought it was just too hot so they detuned it and gave us the 40.

The Col. speaks straight up. If memory serves, after the bad incident in Miami, where a bunch of FBI agents got shot up by two guys, one with a Mini14 rifle, they decided that something had to change from the .38 snubbys most of 'em had. They went with the 10mm, which was based on the S&W 645 / 4506 platform. Yay, the FBI finally got something more than peashooters! Problem is, most FBI guys are not Elliot P Ness types, and some of them have boobs too. They can't handle anything more than a peashooter. After all, they were hired for their brains (think Moldy and Scuzzy from the XYZzz Files). So, the FBI came up with the "10mm FBI" which was just a 10mm auto, loaded down to give recoil more in the neighborhood as a 9mm. As a side note, the laws of physics did not turn their stony faces, and momentum is what it is, as also is energy. The FBI screwed the pooch, had to refit all the guns with new springs, etc etc. And they had a problem with guys wanting to use the 10mm full house rouund, ammo interchangability, hot ammo being used in weak spring guns, weak ammo in standard guns... it was a mess. Along come ol' Mr. Smithston and Weston, and they said hey bubba, you FBI guys that is; you need us to sell you new pistols again, because we took your pipsquesk 10 and made it our powerhouse 40! In fact, its all just about the same, except it feels like a powerhouse in the light guns usually chambered for it, rather than the lummox of a gun it was originally shot in.

Thats that!

I purchased a Glock 20 Gen 4 last summer to carry as a sidearm while deer hunting. My son has had a Gen 3 for several years and I really liked it. I have carried a .44 mag Super Blackhawk while in the woods for years, but the G20 is so much lighter, more compact, better suited for bad weather conditions and I shoot it better also. Like CJB said the 10 loaded to full potential is very close to .41 mag and IMO very capable of taking Whitetail with well placed shots at common sense distances (although I haven't had the opportunity yet). I really like the 10mm. I buy my 10mm ammo from Underwood Ammo. They manufacture excellent full power (HOT) 10mm and their prices are better than BB or Doubletap. I'm definitely a fan of the 10mm and a Dan Wesson Silverback is is high on my list - when I hit the lottery:biggrin1:. My G20 has been flawless with both cheaper, underpowered stuff as well as full powered. The recoil is a non issue for me. I've also considered buying a 29 for carry. Maybe Kahr will make a 10 someday! I say go for it Dog!

With my last 10 mm, a Glock 20 SF, I used a KKM .40 S&W conversion barrel for cheaper practice. Ran great and was a laugh to shoot due to the reduced recoil.

Had the itch for a 10mm (And still do).
Rented a Glock G20 and the recoil wasn't bad at all.
But variety, price and availability of ammo has kept me from getting one.
My nitch/expensive/not always available round? 357 Sig.
I can still get LE Federal HST, Speer GDHP and Winchester Ranger T-Series in 357 Sig.

A friend of mine has a Glock 20................................the recoil is manageable.........................he can't hit the broad side of a barn with it, but that's his problem. He's got it to carry along when deer hunting, or in case he runs into a bear.........................I told him he's lucky that bears are so big, otherwise he wouldn't hit it..................:) I prefer shooting .40 myself...................

I guess he intends to unload his rifle into said deer, and then encounter the bear......

"....thars a bar! whar? over thar!"

Rangers at Yellowstone are issued a brand new US Dept of Interior S&W Model 29 revolvers. Most file off the front sight smooth, as it makes it hurt less when the bear shoves it up their ass. Most also will only fire five shots at any bear, leaving #6 for themselves, as its a known fact that the bears generally wont mess with a dead creature.

Thanks you the replies everyone and that was a great article. I still don't know why I want or need a 10mm other then I just want one. I hunt but I live 30 minutes south of Atlanta so I doubt I'd run into a bear. I do plan on camping around the north Ga mountains but it's not like it's grizzly country or anything. The only thing that's really stopping me from getting one is the price of ammo and the availability of it at local stores. I haven't seen any 10mm at academy sports. There is Georgia Arms that sells ball ammo for around $22 for a box of 50. I'd like to get into reloading but idk if the initial up front cost would out weigh the savings.

You can do more with the 10mm loading it yourself than you can with factory ammo. Load down for a mid level load, load up a bit hotter than factory too, if you're gun will take it.

You might find that a backing off on the oomph just a wee bit has a humongous effect on accuracy... not uncommon with reloading for autoloaders.

I've got a 10mm Witness P-Carry (https://eaacorp.com/portfolio-item/witness-polymer-p-carry/) from EAA. I really like it. For plinking you can get 50 rounds of Precision One's FMJ (http://www.bangitammo.com/store/#!/Precision-ONe-10mm-Auto-180-gr-FMJ/p/32961437/category=8660454) for $20.99. I've also put some Underwood ammo through it and that is definitely a HOT round! For my self-defense rounds, I settled on this 180 gr JHP from HPR (http://www.hprammo.com/catalog/jhp/10mm-29/). I'm really pleased with it.

I'm a big fan of the 10mm. I have two and pack them from time to time when I'm feelin' froggy.
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p246/Iggy25/RZs.jpg
I reload and use some warmish rounds with 180 Golden Saber bullets. They're doing at a 100 yards what a 45 ACP is doing at the muzzle.

Flat shooting and salty when they hit.
I put the 41 Magnum away when I left the Highway Patrol, and carried them out on the ranch for 20 years. When I moved back to town
I figgered they were a little much for city livin', so I went back to 45 ACP and .357 Mag revolvers.

Just got the CW45 and we are in the process of getting to know each other.

My only 10mm has a FLGR, but I'll not be messing with it;). One of these days, I might send some $ to S&W to see if it's one of those that went to the Virginia State Police.:boink:

That there gun is fine as frog's hair. That would just about be the ultimate using 10mm pistol. It would be interesting to find out it's past.
