View Full Version : Full Size 9mm Most Like K9?

Hello, I plan on buying a K9 for CCW and was curious what full size 9mm is most like the K9 in terms of pointing, bore axis, trigger (SA/DA or striker is fine), and grip angle. I hear CZ is in the ball park but can't find anything to support that. Whaddya all think would be a good approximation of a K9 in a full size pistol? Thanks.

That's a tough one because the Kahr trigger is truly unique IMHO. I do have some personal experience with CZ's and have no trouble transitioning between Kahr and CZ. Many people do however because of that heavy first trigger pull on the CZ. But I find the SA follow-ups very Kahr-like. You will have to see for yourself. I recommend the CZ Omega trigger system if you go that way = smoother out of the box but not really lighter. You will love the CZ ergos, bore axis, etc. The only complaint I've ever heard is that some find it hard to grip the slide since part of it is buried in the frame rails. I've never had any failure of any kind with any CZ pistol. And that's not an exaggeration.

You'll get a few other good recommendations I'm sure: Sig, etc.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

I think by full size he meant double stack

Thinking about it some more, I've had a CZ-75 and its a great pistol, full sized, accurate and reliable. But they're not like Kahr in trigger action, nor handling.

Something DAO... Sig full size P250 ? Or possibly... FNS-9 which is full size... high cap... and striker fired with a long pull. Its big though. Huge. Never handled one, but if it handles like the FNX-45 then its a good pointer.

Sorry, I did mean double stack, something better suited to home defense (e.g. 13+ rounds and a rail)

You mentioned CZ and I bet you'll find it close enough = CZ P09 = 19+1.

Possibly as CJB mentions, the Sig P250. 14+1. Nothing really compares to the Kahr trigger that I've come across. The Sig kind of has the same feel to it, but seems heavier, and easier to tell when it's going to break. But it is pretty smooth.
If I ever do get another full size 9, the CZ 75 is right at the top of the list.

I have a Beretta PX4 with the "Constant" trigger. In .40 it holds 16+1, so must hold a bunch in 9mm.

The trigger is much like the Kahr, but a little heavier pull. In the bigger pistol, it seems fine and I shoot it as well as the Kahrs.

I think the DAK trigger in Sig is something else you could consider and I believe that Heckler & Koch has a trigger that might work for you too. I haven't shot either of those.

Ruger P95 DAO?

With still more thinkin.... I've had a 1982 CZ-75, Beretta 92FS, Smith & Wesson 59 series, Kahr (of course), HKP7m13, Sig226, ane four Browning High Powers.

Of all of them, I only still own three of those four Brownings. The fourth one being sold someplace along the line (sadly). Of all the double stack 9mm's, only the HP "POINTS LIKE THE FINGER OF GOD" in my hands. Terrible triggers, single action.... but I can hit with 'em like nobody's business.

So, its more than trigger, more than bore axis and grip angle and more than many things.... its how you can pick it up and hit something without even half way trying.

Ruger P85's were to shooting, as a garbage truck is to driving. They can get you to place to place, but.... ya know...

Beretta always shot low for folks at the range. Aways. Something about the grip angle and trigger makes for flinchdown.

HK got hot... I mean HOT after one mag dump.

CZ was great, never shoulda sold it. I might get another.

Sig.... its Sig, but I'd rather shoot my 220's.

Take a very close look at the FNS 9 Compact. It comes with three magazines two twelve round and one seventeen round mag w/ mag sleeve. One of the twelve round mags comes with a pinky extension for those who prefer a full grip. Well made, accurate and with a little work, a trigger as smooth as a Kahr trigger.

Pretty funny.

I compared a large number of .45 pistols and the one that pointed like the finger of God for me was a Ruger P90. I haven't had the pleasure of trying a BHP (yet) but with all the hype I hope I'm not disappointed.

For some reason 1911s don't point as well for me as they seem to do for a lot of others.

So I'm not going to bash any guns, because even Hi Points are someone's pride and joy somewhere.

If you want higher cap and you are looking at the FNS C (FNS/X is good)......have you considered the Bersa Ultra Compact 9? I know most will laugh at the recommendation. But- its wider than the K9, weight and size otherwise is about the same. Double stack 13 round mag, "very good" da/sa trigger. Its one of the most reliable and best shooters in my arsenal. Mine stays beside my bed, and I carry it often.

I'll try to put a comparison pic up in a moment-

Okay here is a couple pics- Kahr CT380 and Bersa UC 9 for size comparison-

The Bersas are great choices. Very good triggers and alloy frames.

I'm more interested in a full size double stack that feels and points like a K9. Not too concerned about the trigger being K9-like as I can accept SA/DA, striker-fired, or DAO...it's the handling and aiming I'm more concerned with. Thanks for all the great input.

Not sure if you'll find such an animal. I guess what makes a gun point like a K9 would be balance, grip angle and texture, and trigger reach? I'd start with those measurable parameters and work from there. The K9 does feel darn good in the hand, definitely worthy of emulating.

Thats what I was trying to say. You cannot go by figures and numbers and specification. You have to go by why points and feels like you want it to.

And... just to throw this into the mix.... you're never gonna get one that feels similar. Never. Its going to be a hard compromise. You're going from very slim single, to double stack. You're getting more weight in the rear, with the pistol plus even more... with the extra ammo. Balance will be different, weight will be different.

No matter how you slice that one.... you're gonna be in for changes.

You just gotta hold it in your hand...and shoot it. Then you know.

Yeah but I was hoping to have a short list of pistols to try.

If I look at it kinda like skeet shooting, balance, heft, pointing, my CZ 75bd is the closest to the K9 in a double stack.

But, that is of my available choices.

What would be better suited to home defense than the gun you are used to carrying, handling and shooting the most? If more capacity is need than a K9, buy a second one and have one for each hand.

Get a second K9. One in each hand, there's your double stack! :)

I may just do that...or get an MK9.

Sphinx made some of their pistols with a butter smooth DAO trigger. The trigger on the AT-380 is the most "Kahr like" that I've used. look for a Sphinx 3000 or 2000 in DAO.

Take a look at the sig p250sc . Spec are very close to the same and has the same type of trigger pull as kahr . maybe a 1/2lb heavier and not quit as smooth but still very good . It is a double stack 12 rounder but can use 15 rounds mags with an x grip filler . Or the p320sc or compact version for a more typical striker fired short rest trigger . I had to move to a heavier wider grip and shorter trigger pull pistol after hand surgery and bought a compact p320 and wife has a p250sc so have little insight to them . The SC pistol are only 1/06 wide on the slides and 1.10 in the grips
