New to Kahr - just got my PM45

Just added a PM45 to my arsenal last Thursday. So far, I only have 50 rounds through it. Do you have any tips specific to this gun?

Congrats! I got one of those as my dream gun just over 5 years ago. It took a few trips to Kahr, but we got it working reliably... great pistol. I got mine in DLC with night sights and added a bike tube grip cover before shooting it. Those nibs were sharp! I call mine Boomer... and after 5 trips to Kahr and everything but the slide lock lever being replaced at LEAST once, it's an awesome pistol. I called it Franken-Boomer for a while.

If yours shot okay the first time out, good! Mine needed a few machinings completed and went through a few slides... one for cosmetics and a frame swap to stop it from splitting mags at the top rear, but that's pretty unusual and I didn't give up. Most are trouble free.

It will digest just about any factory ammo. I never found one it wouldn't handle and I stick to one weight... 230 grains, but I didn't like +P 230-gr Gold Dots by Underwood... a little fierce for that small pistol.

I carry it with Speer 230-grain Gold Dots Short Barrel in a Cross Breed Mini
Tuck that fits PM9, P9, P40, and the PM45.

I've been carrying a PM45 for a number of years.

1. Break it in with the hottest ammo you can get your hands on. You want to loosen up that recoil system.
2. Keep it clean. Keep the striker channel UNlubed.
3. Do not go all anal gushy over a little piece of polymer that is wearing in.

FWIW, I have literally..... gone in the Atlantic Ocean with a Kahr PM45 in my pocket, gotten out, rinsed myself and the Kahr off in fresh water at the public shower, put the Kahr back in my pocket, kept it there in wet shorts the rest of the day, and two days later, taken it out of my "then current" pants pocket and dumped six rounds into terra firma without a hitch. Of course it gets another swim job in fresh water to clear out any salt residue, broken down and well lubed... but to date (and this has happened four times already this year) no corrosion, and no stoppages with round ball du-jour. This pistol has many many rounds through it and after the first few boxes.... it runs like a Singer sewin' machine.

My own thoughts on the key to makin' it run well, is to get that recoil spring nice and loose from working it at full speed with ammo. The hotter the better. Get .45ACP +P+ and shoot the fokker like you stole it.

OP, follow the 'Proper prep of a new Kahr' to help with the break-in.

I have a PM9, and do feel the size of the PM frames is better suited for reliability and wear for 9mm than .40 or .45.

I can't believe I missed this post. Congrats on buying a great gun. Like the above post said, read the sticky on proper prep of a new PM. I did have to polish the feed ramp with Colgate for a half hour but never a problem since. That got me over the initial reluctance to strip it. Since you've already shot 50 rounds without issue (?) just keep going. I carry mine IWB in a Split Decision by High Noon Holsters and OWB in a Black Dog Concealment Kydex. There are several good holster choices. Concealing is easy and I hope you never need it. Enjoy!

About 5 years ago I and 2 of my buddies were heaed to Milwaukee, I was going to take them to the Harley museum. well about Rockford, Ill, I passed gas big time, ONLY it was not gas. I was as u say in deep sh!t, so I said nuttin and when we got to Rockford, Ill, I told them I wanted tstop at Kegels harley davidson to show them around. We did and I immediately went to their clothing section and low and behold there was one paif of harley undershorts left. $20, WTF, but I had to have them. I quietly paid for them while my buddines was looking around and hiked tothe mens restroom and changed shorts and cleaned myself up. I bet the cleazning lady about sh!t her drawers when she found my shorts in the trash barrel. My buddies were never the wiser either. Just sayin Yes Mud is sorta wet!!!

My PM45 has had 200 rds of 185 w/o any flaws. I did polish the feed ramp. I then had the slide cerakoted, now gun not only shoots good, but looks awesome! Good acquisition mod. I am concerned that my gun will not function properly with snap caps. I like using snap caps when dry fire training, but as as posted before, I cannot get the slide to eject the cap w/o slamming the edge of the slide onto the edge of a door facing. :cool:

Kudos on your purchase of a great firearm. Mine was just five years old when it died a horrible death from a overloaded winchester round. Up to that point sparky ate any round he was fed and never once failed to fire, failed to feed or failed to eject. If I did my job he would group within one inch around center at 10 yards, move out to the 25 yard line and everything was on a 8 inch pie plate. Now that 25 yard shooting may sound bad but put a 8 inch paper plate on your chest and think about it. Sparky shot best with 185 gr hollow points from Hornady. But every thing went bang regardless of weight or bullet design. Sparky would even let me know when I wasn't holding on tight enough. If I weak wristed in the least the ejected case would hit me dead center in the forehead. When held correctly cases landed about 5 yards out at the 3 o'clock position. I carried Sparky IWB with a Desantis holster on my opposite front side and did a cross draw presentation. When wearing Cargo pants I modified the right C. pocket and a cheap pocket holster for carry. Just keep a tight grip and clean /lube as you should and you and your 45 will be fine. Practice your draw/presentation with an empty weapon twice as often as you practice your shooting. Always remember: Your worst day at the range will likely be better than your best day/night in a gun fight.

I'm new to Kahr Talk also this is my very first post. Nice PM45, I'm thinking about trading a S&W bodyguard 380 for a CM45. I have a CM9 and I love it, I carry it in my pocket or in my waste. Congrats on the high end beauty.

So how many of you envisioned this story unfold in your minds as you read this? Not a pretty is it?
I can relate to this story as I used to be a over the road truck driver.... somewhere on the side of an exit ramp outside Detroit lays the remains of a ruined pair of Hanes... How's that for a visual? :o

I had a PM9 a few years ago that wouldn't run reliably even after a trip back to the factory. I sold it (with disclosure). I recently bought a new PM9 from Bud's. Remembering my last experience I paid extra for the insurance that Bud's offers on new firearm purchases. Well this new one has been flawless out of the box with many different brands of ammo. I didn't need the insurance after all. It is now my pocket carry pistol when I want to carry a 9mm. My EDC is a flawless P-380.

I tend to believe that if the snap caps are the only "ammo" that you have that problem with means that the snap caps are out of spec. I would try a different brand of caps.
