Just bought a PM40

I am very anxious as my new PM40 with night sights is sitting an my FFL for the remainder of my 10 day hold.

This will be my first Kahr, and is intended to eventually assume the role of an EDC.

I was hoping to reach out to the PM40 owners here and find out what I need to know about the weapon.

I am also interested in any tips and tricks for related gear, ammo, etc...

Definitely not! It is a PM40 with Night Sights, PM4043N, which normally has an MSRP of $935. This one had been sitting brand new at a gun store for quite some time, hence the lower MSRP and only two magazines. In the end I was able to pick it up for $579 out the door, no tax, free shipping, with a third magazine thrown in. I would like to believe that I did OK, or at least I hope so!

I am actually ammo shopping as we speak. I have it narrowed down to three brands, I think... :confused:

I carry 9mm in my MK, and like the Fed HST's 147 gr, or Critical Defense FTX 115 gr..................................In .40, I carry the HST's in 165 gr...................................the Critical in 165 gr. and the regular FED 180 gr. JHP's.

I found my K40 is more accurate with 155gr and 165gr boolits. It will feed and shoot anything tho. So definitely try a few and see if your gun agrees.

I am narrowing down the ammo choices. Here is my thought process:

This gun will be solely for carry purposes, therefore carry ammo is the primary concern. I also want to be able to train with a round that is as close as possible to the carry round.

This led me directly to both the Winchester Train & Defend and the Federal Practice & Defense combo packs. Unfortunately I immediately crossed them both off of my list. The Winchester is reduced recoil, thus lower velocity. The Federal utilizes Hydra-Shok instead of HST. Neither one was what I was looking for.

I started comparing other rounds and settled on ordering the combos listed in the attached image for testing:

I really wanted to test out Winchester Ranger, but couldn't find anywhere that I could buy both the FMJ and JHP. Not going to pay $15 shipping twice for 2 boxes of ammo.

I added the Winchester White Box only because my local Wal-Mart happened to carry it.

I have so far omitted rounds like Hornady Critical Defense/Duty, Cor-Bon, Liberty Defense, etc... simply because I couldn't find less expensive FMJ rounds to use for training that matched their weight and velocity.

I like the Speer combo from your list. Lawman can be pretty reasonably priced around these parts.

I am definitely hoping the Speer combo performs well, even though it is older technology. I chose the 165gr because mathematically it should outperform the 180gr and the 180gr Speer combo has slightly different velocities, which I didn't like.

I went with the 180gr Federal because the 165gr was slower that the Speer and the lighter weights didn't look like they had enough velocity to make up for the lack of weight.

The PM40 is an excellent little weapon. Once I got used to its very large for a small pistol flash bang effect it's very accurate, IMO. It's really a close quarters type weapon but it can still do it at 25 yards though the grouping is not exactly tight. I recommend the Crimson Trace Laserguard for that little extra sighting. Don't bother with the short flush fitting 5 round mag unless you plan on pocket carry. I would buy extra extended mags as they give better control and accuracy. I still practice with short mag but it's nowhere near as comfortable to shoot. The more I shot it the more I fell in love with it.

This past Monday I practiced drawing from my IWB holster and firing double taps at about the 7 yard line and was able to keep a nice center mass group. I was using 165 gr. FMJ remanufactured ammo and was surprised how well the pistol took to that ammo.

Yeah, that's why I stayed away from the Winchester Train & Defend line. I am hoping to eventually test out some Ranger though!

do the prep of ur PJM40, u bought a hand cannon, leep your sessions short . If it was my 40, it wouldhave ports in it for sure. Just sayin

I would take those velocity quotes with a grain of salt when you're firing them out of a 3" barrel.

Most definitely, which is why I am avoiding any reduced recoil loads.

I plan on chronographing each load at 10 feet for comparison.
