View Full Version : computer's getting smaller
I find myself transitioning to smaller and smaller computers.
Newest is just Raspberry Pi 2, 10in bare touch screen and a wi-fi and blueooth dongle, along with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. May put a usb hard drive on it (2.5 inch)
Can I do email, browse the web, order crap online, and run Open Office on it? Yes. All I need, and it will print easier and cleaner than Android over Linux. Running Raspian is not so different than the RedHat / Fedora I'm used to.
And it all runs from a 5v usb battery pack. Can't really beat that.

I'm gonna apply at a Holiday inn express as a maid or something.
I've had it with the Violets. I'm making a list.
Walmart, Goodwill, Blind industries, now you remind me of Holiday Inn.
raspberry pi is a small computer, smaller than a cell phone.
mostly full featured, you add what you want
runs from a cell phone charger (or cell charger pack)
Runs Linux in the form or Raspian, or Windows 10
And you lose the bloat, overhead and ties to big brother with it!

The funny thing for me is how powerful my phone is.
2.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor with 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM & 64GB MicroSD.
exactly!
This thing has a quad core 1ghz ARM processor, runs everything. Has great graphics, runs wi-fi and blue tooth.... not much to want really, unless you're doing photoshop or cad or other real intensive applications.

I went to a Samsung medium sized tablet a year ago and rarely use my wifes Mac. It does most everything I need except the screen keyboard making it look like jocko hijacked my account sometimes. For mobile wifi I turn on my cell phone hotspot if needed.
I still have the work windows 7 laptop if needed though. I did hook up a 32 inch flatscreen tv to it as a monitor. Its sweet when I can open 4 windows to bounce between programs as needed.

Speaking of going small. Did you hear about this booming Japanese company that was so successful they moved into a smaller building?

Guess I'm old school - I built a new desktop with all the latest bells and whistles and a thirty inch monitor in June, and I used it for nearly everything. Oh, I have a Toshiba laptop that I used to use to carry around files and videos, but I now use my Kindle Fire HD for that because it's easier to carry. The laptop spends 95% of it's time in the safe. I have a year old Samsung smart phone that I use for a ..............phone. Neither the phone, tablet, or laptop is set up to receive E-Mails. Of course all three can access the internet, but I rarely use that function.

My Chromebook has a 26" Samsung HD monitor - LOL.
But my Galaxy Note 4 definitely gets Email.
And streams movies or whatever on its 5.7" Quad HD screen.
The 16 MP camera is pretty sweet too.
Also, like most I guess, even my 60" HD TV is smart and connected to the internet for streaming movies.
And that's just icing on the cake after 200 HD satellite channels - LOL.
It's hard to stay old school these days...
This post coming courtesy of Raspberry Pi 2, running on a 7 inch touch screen with bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Yah, the mouse and touchscreen work at the same time, very cool.
Runs wi-fi.. etc etc.
And its the smaller than a deck of cards. And runs from a 5v usb "battery charger"

Eventually the pc computer will be reduced to a tiny chip which the government will require us to have implanted in our heads.

This is a teaching tool for embedded programming. Get yourself a 10" Android tablet, root it, change the OS and you'll be much happier.
No, you can't run Office on it, nor will it run Windows 10. It will run the CLI-based Embedded Windows 10, but why?

Windows 10 Embedded is a CLI for Internet of Things.
Well considering Android is just a GUI over Linux....
Already got Open Office on the little pi
And got it printing directly to the printer, with much better quality than locally or cloud based downsampling that Android has.
No, it doesn't edit photos, but does work as a decent SAMBA server and I can connect the little 2tb 2.5" drive to it for storage.
And, not including the drive, I got the pi, monitor, cables, wifi, bluetooth, keyb and mouse for under a hundred bucks. Or about 1/5 the cost of the tablet I'm using to write this on!
