View Full Version : Wear Marks -- A Truck Lover's Thread

Thought I'd post a pic of Big Red. 8 years old and still standing tall. But if you look close enough it's covered with dings, dents and scratches. Just like my firearms, I consider them character marks and proof that it's a working truck and I'm getting my money's worth. And, just like my firearms, I keep it cleaned and lubed and serviceable. Because I use it every day.

I'm pretty pleased that it's still looking so good. Then again, if I was only 8 years old, I might look good too.

Dings and dents are just the patina on a classic.

You should see our company trucks. Dings, dents and dirt seem to abound when the drivers don't own the vehicles. They have "patina" on them in weeks.

'99 Ford Ranger - 3.0 V6 - 247,000 miles
Still gets 26mpg on the highway, and about 21 about town

No pictures, but its showin' its age. Paint is just beginning to go south in places... it happens.

Bought with 43,000 on it, for a whoppp'n $7000 two years old. It doesn't owe me one cent, or one mile for that matter.

Little Blue, the truck before Big Red was a 3.0 Ranger, 4wd, manual shift, no a/c. I drove that one until the Ohio rust took it's toll. This one seems to be holding up much better. Good stuff!

I must be the only person here that never owned a truck. Well, there was the SSR I owned for a year, but most of my truck-driving friends wouldn't accept that, even if it did have a 6 liter LS2 Corvette engine with 400 HP. They just said it was some kind of crazy hot rod with a very large trunk. It didn't have any dings or scratches either.

The truck lives here:
http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o706/yqtszhj/IMG_20150912_105732421_zpsn2gcmj6b.jpg

Truck said it wanted to live here. Truck also said if it's from the low altitude Southeast don't feed it 85 octane flat land gas and expect it to do anything above 8000 ft. Going up hills you'll end up in low gear and/or pushing. Feed it mid-grade or better.

I used to push 6'2" but age has leveled me out just over 6'1" now. Wife is actually 4"10 1/2" but she'll insist she's 4'11". Every little bit matters i guess.

I want go get back out there really bad but every summer the last few years something has messed it up. I think if I get to go out again I'm going to hit Utah and the wife has a cousin around Phoenix we might go see. I'd like to see meteor crater too. She also has family in CA but I'm going to fight going there for sure.

Actually, the prices have been going up lately, especially for the 05 and 06 models with the LS2 engine. I sold my 05 in December for more than I paid a year earlier. It was a cool vehicle with the retractable hardtop, but it was heavy and drove, well, like a truck - top heavy and slow steering. Not at all like my Corvette or SLK AMG. Some people autocross them, but I don't see how.

Didn't see much of that food where I was but if you wanted an elk burger, steak, or Mexican food it was on the menu.

And have a taste for Texas style BBQ and fresh Sashimi.
But I believe Phoenix is about the fifth largest city in the U.S.?
And North Scottsdale/Paradise Village does not disappoint.

I ended up on a washed out trail up in the mountains.
Had to drop into 4x4 Low and do some real rock crawling to get out.
My Tacoma doesn't know it's a compact truck - LOL!
It's pretty amazing.:D

Coming down out of the mountains on what appeared to be a fire road?
Some switchbacks were tight too.
That's where a compact truck really shines.
And when things opened up? I was drifting around the curves...
Stopped to let a Jeep by coming the opposite direction..
And the guys were laughing.
Told me it looked like I was having fun! :2eek:

I had a '92 Ranger with the 3.0 V6 manual trans. It hauled many a load of wood. Then 2 grandsons came along so I went to the dark side and got a Silverado. Very quiet and nice truck. It carries 5 people with room to spare. 327 cu in (5.3 L) V8 that shuts off 4 cylinders when they're not needed. Best mileage so far was 23.5 but usually is around 16-18 mpg. Actually, about the same as the Ranger. Also got 4WD so I don't get stuck in soft soil at my father-in-laws farm. I love that Arizona sky but I think Carolina blue when I see a sky like that. God makes some beautiful scenery throughout these USA.

As a devout Chevy man myself although I haven't drove one regular for years I don't see the Silverado as the dark side in the least.
I still have a 97 Chevy 4x4 in the driveway. We use to haul hay and make dump runs, hell of a good truck.

Hoping my next van will be a chevy, hopefully one of them AWD full size jobs, not sure they even still make them.
Otherwise there's a place in Portland I believe that takes new Ford vans and puts all brand new 4x4 stuff under them. Probably a princely sum of loot but no more worries about my hill in winter and I hope to get back up into the logging roads again while I still have time.

Now that's what I'm talking about! I seen one similar to that first link last time at the wheel chair store. Didn't have the ladder and stuff on the roof but very similar. It had a lift and stuff in it.
Not sure I'd need the ladder myself.

Place I mentioned does something similar to that. I guess the more bells and whistles you order the more princely the sum.

I managed to get me a new drivers license yesterday, never any doubt but it's still a hurdle I worry over. Now they are newly good for 6 years and with luck I can renew on line for the next one, can only online them every other one.
That might be close to the last one I need so feeling good about that.

That 4x4 van is real cool if you already have a "pick-em-up". Mine's a '66 Chevy LWB 4x4, couldn't live without it on the farm. Maybe add a cab-over camper and I'd have the best of both worlds?

The 66 is probably my all time favorite body style of truck ever built. Got a neighbor down the street with one just a settin in his yard. Been there for years. I want it badly. Take some work to make it nice but I think it's pretty solid and worth the effort.

A lot of guys took 64's and 65's and put 66 hoods on em to make em look like a 66.

I gotta get cool trucks and cars out of my head. Too hard for me to deal with. I've always been a pickup guy myself, had a couple flat beds in for fun. Good ole days for sure.
