In March, 2015, I took my seldom-fired Kahr PM 40 to the range to knock the bees and spiders out of the barrel. When one of the mags would not go into the mag well, I noticed the mag. had cracked along the rear left corner from the top down for @ 1/4 inch. I thought it odd, considering the gun was just 3 years old at the time and the mag. was stored empty. Kahr replaced it without question and I thought that was the end of it until this week.

On Sept. 14, 2015, I received an email with this photo of another cracked PM 40 mag. which came from the owner's off-duty carry. (No, I don't know why the photo copied so large.) The crack in the photo looks identical to mine and the gauge of the steel looks very thin, or perhaps it was just too brittle. Whatever the cause, this failure is totally unacceptable from a quality mfgr. like Kahr and especially in a carry gun.

Has anyone else seen this problem? I have a feeling that Kahr is aware of it. If they are, what are they going to do about it, other than replace them as owners complain? Of course, if it costs the owner their life in a self-defense situation, Kahr will probably never know about it. Since the PM 40 is a concealed carry gun, perhaps all the mags should be recalled and replaced but I'm not going to hold my breath. As a professional firearms instructor, I'm going to warn my CCW students to think twice about the PM 40.

On the positive side for Kahr, my usual carry is the K9 which I have had no problems with to date and which gets fired a lot more the the PM 40.

I've had broken followers but no mags.

I have a P40 and have had no problems with the mags that I didn't cause. I did, however, have several incidences of magazine failures with the splitting at the upper rear corners of my PM45 magazines. Customer Service was able to duplicate the problem and only a replacement frame cured the splitting. I later had another incidence deemed to be magazine problems. All of my .45 mags were replaced both times. Later I had springs fail in the 5 and 6-round mags and discovered the wrong springs were installed in the 7-rounders. All 9 springs were replaced by Kahr. I think my problems were probably the worst case experienced and haven't really heard of any .40 problems, other than follower failures... feed ramp too long.

Sh!t happens and Kahr took care of it. I'm not sure what I'm missing. You've had no further problems since March? I'm thinking this is a happy thread?

I believe you overlooked the fact that we have now documented TWO identical failures on TWO identical defensive firearms? When similar failures occur in a critical piece of gear, that is anything but a happy thread! That is a "clue" that there MAY be a serious manufacturing problem with these magazines that MRI/Kahr needs to investigate.

How would Kahr "take care of it" if it fails in the middle of a defensive encounter? It's kind of like returning a defective parachute to the person who packed it. If it fails when your life depends on it, you may be S.O.L.

Last I checked Kahr sells thousands of magazines. How statistically significant is two?

The original one magazine that came with my CM40 failed when the follower broke. While waiting for replacement from Kahr, I purchased another magazine from a local gun shop. Later, taking the gun to the range with both mags, one of the two magazines failed by cracking as described in the OP. This was also replaced by Kahr. I have three other Kahrs, one of which is a MK40 and so far I have not had other failures. Hope I have paid my dues.

the entire gun neerds to go back to kahr, if the backs splits where the weld is and sometimes even on the corners, it is usually because the follower is literaly getting hammered byt tge feed ramp upon ejection . Most of the times the follower breaks, but kahr needs to do a rampteco,my on your gun to correct this issue. Breaking two magazines or followers is an indication that it ain't gonna cure itself either. I would email kahr attn. Jayt and state ur issue and ask if they willissue aickup on your gun .
