Son just called to say that his 12 year old came in the back door at home and said, "Dad, there's a gun on the ground outside the door". Son asked, "A squirt gun?".
"No, a REAL gun, and a purse!"
Holy crap! So son investigates purse, and thinks the ID in it belongs to a former neighbor woman who was "crazy" & unstable. He hasn't seen her in months since she was evicted from the rent house across the street. I told son to call 911, since that S&W semi-auto handgun may have been used in a crime.
So he called 911 & the dispatcher said an officer would come by to investigate as "soon as possible". He locked his back door & closed the curtain, and will keep an eye on the "contraband" while waiting for the LEO to show up. Son did take some photos of said gun & purse without touching anything (after he checked the purse - he never touched the firearm).
Am glad grandson heeded his "training" about firearms safety.

Yup, that's a good boy that's been trained proper.

Cop just left son's house with the gun & purse. Since there was no dog to shoot, he cleared the 9mm of its eleven rounds, checked the storage shack in the back yard and the creek area over the back fence. He advised locking all the fence gates, and commended grandson for his proper actions.

That situation could have ended very badly for someone. Glad the 12 y.o., with a solid head on his shoulders, found it and not some other kid. Tell him "Good thinking!!" from Grandpa's forum friends. He gets a bona fide "atta boy".

Glad it was your grandson that found the gun and not some kid likely to pick it up and play with it. I bet you are wondering what the heck went on that those items were left there.

Glad it was you too. Think of how many would have just taken the gun, hid the purse and not said a thing.

This is all the result of the boy having responsible parents and grandparents. Teach you children well. Keep us up to date on how this all plays out if possible.

Strange how it got to the back of the house, is there no fence separating front from back?

Yes, but the gate was unlocked. Not any more.

So, strange question, you have a paypal?
I've got $10 for your grandson for doing the right thing.
I don't think people, especially kids, are rewarded enough when they make the right choice in a serious situation.

I'll match that, fine idea!

Thanks, but no need - when his mom died in 2013, her employer set up a generous college fund for him & his little brother.
However, the boys are staying with us Friday night - so I'll show him the responses to this thread & the others I posted on a couple of other boards. The praise given him should be reward enough.

He is a great kid, and I have to say I am impressed with the folks on this forum. Some gracious offers and a class response.

My two youngest grandsons with their dad (who is my middle son) in Paris - Summer of 2014 - a Brit friend of mine invited them over (travel expenses paid) to spend a month with his family in a small French village. The friend is renovating a 200 year old stone barn into his summer residence. My son helped him with a lot of carpentry work. It was a great getaway for son's motherless family. (Yes, this son is a retro-hippie - but likes guns & has a modest collection)
