Been a while since I posted here, as life has definitely gotten in the way and wish could say has been fun. Back when I did post often, I know Bawanna was envious of some of the "relics" id post. So since Got a couple people really interested on the info on the 1919 and 1918 brownings I posted on another thread, figure show em off, and what not. First up, the B.A.R.
Its unfortunately a Semiauto modified one, from Ohio Ordnance. I have done alot of collecting, and modding to get it to be a great WWII piece
Starting off with it just opened from the box 3 years ago

Mod #1 the bolt. I picked up a NOS USGI bolt assembly, as I read that if the bolt was in "satin" finish was probably a swedish bar bolt. Took mine out, and discoved was a ROT usgi bolt. know is post WWII, but markings arent seen while in gun, so will suffice. Ill keep the other bolt as a spare, as the one in gun is already headspaced to gun.
Original bolt, in satin OOW finish.

Quick stop at gunshop down road, got some birchwood casey gun blue, and went to town on it. Was my first attempt at bluing, so was not perfect. couple inner portions didnt really take to the solution. overall gave it an 85% on appearance. FAR better than the silver bolt look.

Mod #2 the buttstock. I love the look of the american walnut, on iron firearms. So without hesitation that was the model I chose.
after some research, realized the buttstock was a dead giveaway to being incorrect for WWII. The main giveaway is the rear sling swivel. short and straight. Obvious korean war era
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff186/maninblue1861/467354_3374887701587_1996363718_o_zpsv3j49ykz.jpg (http://s238.photobucket.com/user/maninblue1861/media/467354_3374887701587_1996363718_o_zpsv3j49ykz.jpg. html)
So after some searching, I finally got this 1943 made firestone bakelite stock. Afterwards, had heck of a time finding the sling swivel to match the cutout profile.

This stayed on my gun for about a year. I searched high and low for an original walnut stock in the WWII profile, but was like finding hens teeth. One day happened to be browsing the bmgparts.com site, and saw he stocked the WWII 1918A2 profile walnut stocks. I leaped at it. had to drill the holes for the sling swivel screws, and do some minor wood removal to get the buttplate to fit properly so could be screwed on. HUGE difference in appearance.

Noticable mod #3 the gas regulator.
as we know, from OOW they come with a korean war screw type adjustable gas regulator. Obviously, if going for WWII, this wont work.

I went out and searched for a WWII key lock regulator. before doing so, make sure your gas tube has the 3 notches for the regulator key to lock into. OOW used both wwii type, and korean war type that had the notches machined out. Also the vent holes will need to be drilled. I havent done so just yet on mine, but am looking into sizes needed to do it.

It came with a carry handle, but wasnt implimented till late 1945, so wouldnt have seen use in WWII. Also the web green sling it came with, had to go. Found a nice 3 hook repro m1907 sling for it on ebay for under 30 bucks.

Well after a years searching, landed an original bar mag chest. Was used by calvary troops, to be mounted on saddle packs in the 20's up to early WWII.

Project #2. Back story a neighbor down road passed away about 6 years ago, was a WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Army Vet. Got along with him and his wife, and helped them out with the snow ect. Well she informs me that he had some weapons he'd like me to have, as their kids wanted no part of them and knew I was a reenactor and collector (Score!). So I headed over a couple days after the funeral, with my c&r bound book and license ect to take possession of what he had, as they were all old guns supposedly. first couple I pulled out were some old side by side shotguns made by parkerbrothers (neat, but not my area of interest) next came out was a Eddystone 1917, with original bluing, and all original as issued parts (thats a keeper), next was a sporterized 1903 springfield (since restored to its original military appearance), then was a couple other old hunting rifles (not much value, or interest). She then said he had a couple other things in a trunk in the attic. So I made my way up there, and tried moving the trunk. was pretty heavy. I asked if she knew what was in it, as was locked. She said only 2 guns were in there, and some photos ect) So I cut the lock out, and opened it. My jaw hit the floor. 1st laying ontop of a quilt and wrapped in some newspaper from the early 50's was a Savage thompson M1A1. Was the first and only REAL thompson i ever handled. Numbers on grip and receiver matched each other, and was parkerized. I asked where he kept his paperwork for it.... She said he didnt have any, as he missed the deadline to register it in the 60's (yes I got choked up as knew that was the death knell for this). I put it aside and continued digging, on the bottom found a 1919a4 browning machine gun (yes a full fledged beltfed) was wrapped in plastic, and had more grease that a jiffylube all over it. I cleaned off the name plate, and said made by saginaw (general motors) inspection ofrest of the parts proved to be all saginaw marked parts, and or cast parts (saginaw made cast parts) again hesitated to ask, he have the paperwork for this? she said no (god damn it, strike 2). I asked if she knew how he got these, and again she said she hadnt a clue, other than fact she remembers seeing them from shortly after wwii. I grabbed the shotguns and rifles and put in my truck. I contacted the ATF about the thompson and 1919. they said nothing could be done to legally register them ect, and that they'd need to be destroyed. Now I wasnt ready to hand over the complete guns, I asked if I took the receiver of the thompson, and the left side plate of the 1919 off could I keep the remainder of the parts. Guy said that was fine, and they were sending someone to pick up the plate and receiver. Great finds, and ashame the laws are as they were that such historical weapons had to be destroyed. But I still had most of the 1919, as was just the numbered side of the gun they wanted.
I got to work researching rebuilding it as a dummy gun, but stumbled onto how to build it into a legal semiauto. Figure why not bring it back to life, as best I can? So read up on what was needed by law to be a legal semi auto, then researched on a semiauto design (there are 4 dif types of maker parts and styles) I settled on the KMP modifications to the bolt, trigger frame, and sear as that was the least invasive (involved shaving a small amount off side of trigger frame, barrel extention, and bolt, and widening the sear slot on bolt, to only work with the semi auto sear). Next was trying to find a sideplate. looked at halo, and a few others, but wanted to get this back to near identical as was before I drilled the side plate off. I stumbled onto a maker, who made as close to original plates, down to the heat treating of the rear2 inches of plate, and markings. No other company did that to their plates as was only needed for full auto to withstand the poundings, and their parkings with lazer engraved that didnt look right. He roll stamped his like original, and handstamped the inspector markings. So mods done, plate in hand, was time to break the rest of gun down to seperate parts for bead blasting and reassembly. Buddy of mine builds these regularly, so let me use his shop, tools, and knowlege to bring this old warhorse back to life, and not mix my parts with his projects lol.

An original to the left, mine to the right. My SN I added a extra "1" at the end, rest were the original guns numbers. All in all was into this project for under $400 bucks (250 for plate, rest for machining of internals for semi auto, and beer) Was done in about 7 hours. Only "Original" parts not used, was the right side plate (legal reasons), the original sear (also legal reasons) and the trigger as wouldnt work with the semiauto setup. rest was as it was when found, destroyed, then reborn.

Next time capsule: This japanese arisaka was found in the attic of the house that is addressed to on front of the crate. Soldier that sent it home, and passed away left it untouched since it left okinawa. Met up with the son of the soldier to do the transfer, and save this relic at my buddies gun shop.

popped it open and....

still covered in axel grease. note the japanese writing on inside, from a wood box the soldier made the shipping crate out of.
Sat this way for a while at home. then noticed there was a reminant of a rodent nest inside. it bothered me to see if the rifle was damaged by something eating it ect at some point, so finally decided to carefully remove it

was in near mint shape, other than looks like the soldier took a phnumatic grinder to the mum.

That arisaka is in super shape, first one I've seen that didn't have an arsenal stock repair in the butt stock.
Seems every one you see has the mum ground off, has to be an import thing or something. It's a rare thing to find one with the mum intact. What a neat find though. The box and everything needs to be preserved, belongs in a museum actually. Way way cool.

Had 6 1903a4's in my life, but been itching for a mauser k98 sniper for a while. Was going to convert my old Mitchell mauser byf 43 k98 into a correct looking high turret sniper using the readily avalible Chinese scopes and mounts, till I read the horror shows of how soft and crappy they are.
after research and searching landed an original german kahles H/4x60 scope (one of 3 types used on original high turrets) and a set or rings made on original the machinery in Austria.
After a months wait for customs, my original kahles H/4x60 German scope, and high turret mounts (finally arrivedhttp://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff186/maninblue1861/IMAG0061_zpssknxxqzw.jpg (http://s238.photobucket.com/user/maninblue1861/media/IMAG0061_zpssknxxqzw.jpg.html)

the stock was killing me, so that was next to modify. searched ffrom coast to coast looking for a mauser werks orbendorf produced stock, with no luck. then stretched out to norway where I found one.
Stock replacement done. Range tested and got about 2" groups at 200 yards. Going to push back to the300 and 600 lines next week.
