Range Report on my new to me (used) CW45, with new recoil spring, mag catch and spring, and slide stop spring: Original recoil spring had been cut 5 or 6 coils by original owner....
I did about 200 rounds, all together. About 125 were the FMJ Miwall reloads.
Magazines used: (2) Kahr factory 6 round CW45 mags
(3) ATC 7 round Colt Officers mags, blued, from Cotes
(1) Chip McCormick "Shooting Star" Full size 1911 magazine, 8 round, with "Xtreme grip on bottom
Ammo used: Miwall Reloading 230 TMJ (FMJ, round nose)
Speer Gold Dot 230 grain JHP
Winchester Ranger "T Series" 230 grain JHP +P -LEO only- (Improved black Talon, minus the evil black paint! Hence "T Series")
Hornady Critical Duty 220 grain +P JHP (with nose insert)
I did NOT shoot for group size. I was ringing it out to break in the new spring, and assess reliability mith my Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Ranger +P, T Series carry ammo.
I am not a "Paper Puncher," anyway. Typically I bounce pop cans and pine cones in the woods, shooting off hand. Today, all was done at 7-10 yards, using a B27 Silhouette target. All ammo stayed within about a 10"-12" diameter sized area, centered over the 10X. All firing was done two hand, modified Weaver stance, and all was rapid fire (about 1 shot per second), with rapid magazine changes. If it was going to jam, it would have under those circumstances.
Observations:
1) The weapon shot exactly where I pointed it, though possibly a tad below POA (Point Of Aim) maybe an inch or two. The Ranger T Series and Hornady Critical Duty shot a bit higher than the others, maybe because of their both being +P loadings.
2) The weapon did buck and roar pretty well, but handled much better since I added a Pachmyer slip on grip with single finger rest.
3) All ammo functioned 100% in the ATC 7 round magazines
4) The Chip Mc Cormick 8 round functioned perfectly with the Miwall 230 TMJs and the Winchester T Series +P, but for some reason the Gold Dot failed to pick up a cartridge from the mag twice in the Chip, while the Gold Dot functioned flawlessly in the ATCs and the Factory mags. Interesting
5) The 6 round factory mags had issues. While all the different varieties of ammo fed 100% from the factory mags, however, one of the two mags popped loose twice during the session, even with the new mag catch and spring. Whether it is operator error (bouncing my thumb on the catch - have to make sure you have a "flying thumb" I guess!) or whether there is a problem with the mag itself needs to be examined. I'll take my calipers to it, and see if maybe it is too narrow, etc.
6) I LOVE THIS LITTLE WEAPON!
CONCLUSION: Even with the new recoil spring, it was 100% reliable with ALL ammo using the ATC 7 round mags. I do not hesitate to use it as my EDC (Every Day Carry) weapon with the ATC mags and Winchester Ranger +P "T Series" ammo. The factory mags will sit in the safe as extras. I'll probably get some more of the ATC 7 rounders next month.
Not sure about the 2 FTFs from the Chip using the Gold Dot. I will revisit this problem after I break this little puppy in a little more.
