These dang shotgun sports are gettin' expensive. Stopped by the LGS today to buy shells and, of course, had to look around. I breezed right past the semi-autos as I've been thinking on another revolver...preferably SA...a Vaquero would be perfect. Lo and behold somebody just traded in 3 Vaqueros and a Single Six. I cain't buy them all so I brought the purdiest one (IMHO) home with me: CCH Ruger Vaquero with a Bisley grip in .45colt. Born on date 5/25/2001. Me smiling!

Mighty nice. I like that color case hardening of the frame. Purdy.
Faux color case... its an applied coating. Still pretty!

case hardening is an aplied color realy not a durable process either. Most jobs today they even satin finish clear coat them, as sunlight will even fade it out over time, cleaning solvents for sure.

The frame finish looks pretty good on this one. I think maybe it spent its life in the dark. Kinda like its new owner.

You might be surprised. Used Vaqueros and Blackhawks are pretty darn reasonable. By far the prettiest guns I own for the money.

That's a kind thought. I'm sure he/she did. I've traded just a couple and it usually hurts a little financially. Unless you focus on how it helped you get what you really wanted. :)

Thanks for the heads up. I was aware that Ruger discontinued their CCH finish over durability issues. I'll have to be careful with the cleaning solvents.

True color case hardening is a heat treatment that hardens the exterior of metals down to a few thousandths of an inch. What is added to the process, bone chips, oily rags, charcoal, and other secret ingredients is what produces those beautiful colors.
It's my understanding that Ruger uses a chemical treatment to color their frames.
What's already been posted about the coloring being fragile is true for either process but that doesn't mean that the color will wear off quickly. Just don't abuse it or submit it to a lot of strong sunlight. My dos centavos on this. Other comments welcomed.

I sent my Iver Johnston S/S skeeter with two barrels and two forearms to "who was supposed tobn e one of the best cch guys around. This gun I have had over 25 years, belonged to my dad and it never gave ONE issue. Truly a super peace two as Ihave never yet been bale to find any Skeeter that was made custom with two barrels (one full and mod) ( one Open and cylinder). I truly loved this gun and early this year I decided I wanted to case harden it, so I researched and found and talked to who I thouhght was a good guy. I sent it to him, took 4 months to get it back. The cch job was awesome, but he totally fokked up the gun. It would not lock up, the left barrel wouond not fire. I sent it back and he saidhe fixed it and got it back and he fixed the lock up part but the eft barrel would not fire. I was already out 50$in return shipping etc and now was getting pissed. While at ther local skeep range all the shooter told me where to take it. It was an old time smitty about 50 miles frtom my place that I had heard about for years but never went to him. Sometimes we tend to think if we send a gun 400 miles away to get service done it is far better than someone 50 miles away. live and learn.
I pickedit up last week, and it was perfect. he even did some minor things to it that I never noticed or ask for, but the bottom line was he said in a sheepish way, that who ever did the cch, did not get the gun back together, and in cch a gun expeciall a S/S, normallyt the heat can cause some metal variations to hange, and there for it has to be "hard" fitted back right. He says he has been cch hardening for 30 years and about every gun he has doneneeded some Hard fitting after the heating process. anyway had I know what I know now, I would never had done the cch to this shotgun, I was not out only alot of wasted time but many bucks tojust get it backto where it was before I sent it in. The bluing on the gun prior was perfect to, but I had the hots for cch. Had I went to this smitty 50 miles away, it would have been done nodoubt correctly. He did tell me that he has never seen an Iver Johnson skeeter with afactory set of two barrels and matching forearms and pigeon grade wood also. which was serial numbered tomatch the gun numbers.
My opinion or advice, BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT CCH. They do require more care to keep the finish prestine, ut they sure look purdy to..Just sayin

When your britches stick out in front, you'll see a derelict stand up and run for the hills far away from any sheep or other potential victims.
Just send me that J frame and lets be done with it.
