Here we have the newest addition to my fleet. It is an M&P40 FS. It is a police trade-in from the Detroit Police Dept. Although it's a police trade, it is brand new in box. It is in pristine, new condition, and has never been fired but for the factory test round. It has Trijicon night sights that still glow as bright as the ones on a Sig I bought less than a year ago. It came in a nice plastic S&W case/box which is larger than the usual S&W boxes I have seen. In the box was everything that comes with a brand-new gun: 3 mags, 2 additional palm swells, test casing in envelope, all original manuals and warranty registration card. The date on the test-fire casing envelope is 1-12-2010, which suggests that the gun is about 6 years old. The serial number is part of a unique series that begins with "DTWXXXX". The gun still has the original packing grease so I will be field stripping and cleaning it before I go to the range this weekend.

I bought the gun from Bud's for $399.00. On it's face that's a good deal considering what a new one with night sights and the third mag would cost. I'm not a big fan of .40 caliber (all my other guns are 9mm or .45); I bought it mainly because I live in the greater Detroit area and I just thought it would be cool to own one. The trigger is typical M&P: gritty take-up, heavy break (probably necessary in a police gun), and marginal reset. After I run a few hundred rounds through it to see what's what, I suspect it will be getting some Apex love.

If I were you I'd move. :) All kidding aside that was one hell of a deal even if it is a .40 S&W.

That is cool with the PD markings.

Nice looking pistol with the PD markings and I bet that heavy PD spring pack makes for a really bad trigger pull but that's fixable . Good buy . Sounds like a trigger return spring and striker spring at least in the future .

Good deal! Most urban areas in the USA have issue. Be careful out there.

You're right about that! It definitely has the "cop" trigger, probably designed to help prevent officers from shooting "innocent", unarmed........but I digress. The trigger pull is heavy, and I made the mistake of shooting it right after I shot my new Shield Performance Center with the upgraded trigger, which made the difference even more pronounced. All that said, the M&P40 is a surprisingly soft shooter for a .40, and I had no trouble shooting it accurately. I ran 100 or so rounds through it and it was really fun to shoot except for the trigger. My plan is to have an Apex Duty/Carry kit installed as well as an Apex trigger which has the little lever in the center of the trigger ala Glock, instead of the stock M&P hinged trigger, which I am not a fan of. I'm in no rush to do those upgrades, as I bought the gun mainly for a fun conversation piece and range toy, and I have other FS guns (Glocks, Sigs, and 1911's) it I want to shoot really tight groups.

Thankfully, I don't live in Detroit proper, but rather in a very nice suburban area about 25 miles north of the city. That said, Detroit is currently undergoing a "Renaissance" of sorts, at least in the downtown area. A lot of corporate investment and "gentrification", especially along the waterfront and in the University/Medical Center areas. Some of the blighted neighborhoods away from the heart of downtown, however, are veritable war zones that the cops don't even like going into.

Nice pick up shlike....I've got the same gun and it's never missed a beat, rock solid reliable...I had an issue with the gritty trigger too and installed an Apex duty carry kit and it made all the difference in the world, much much easier to shoot without it being too light to safely carry....
