View Full Version : Ruger American .45
Well....
For better or for worse, I pulled the trigger on a Ruger American .45 pistol.
It was either that or the Walther PPQ 45
The Ruger is longer, wider, heavier, fires less shots per magazine, and comes with one fewer magazine. Its trigger is not as nice. Its also just a hair uglier than the Walther, which is no beauty contest winner. Its probably about one and a half shades less ugly than my hairy naked ass cheeks.
But its a Ruger, and I have soft spot for most Ruger pistols. And, its a .45ACP, which is reason enough to buy one.
And... it doesn't say "Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Mass." on the left side.
So we'll see how it goes. The "press" reviews are good, but.. you know how that goes. Gotta wait till Hickock .45 puts it online... or... just take the plunge.
There are two kinds of people in this world my friends, those that wait, and those with loaded guns. You wait.

To be fair, the Ruger has Novak sights - which I like, and a good low bore axis very similar to the PPQ 45. Also has a stainless steel inner chassis that is full length and one piece, sorta like the Sig P250 (and later) family of pistols.
Aw Hell's bells, I'm gonna get a Walther too, just got this one first.

Congrats on the Ruger! I held a 9mm today and just wasn't quite moved to buy. They did not have any .45s.
Well, I'm totally clueless... sight unseen.
Nobody has one here, and nobody has a PPQ for that matter either.

Handled the 9 and .45 last week. One of the LGS had just gotten them in. I thought the trigger was pretty good - very Glocklike, so it felt familiar to me. I also liked the Novak sights. The aesthetics of the pistol didn't exactly give me a chubby either, but for the price and a lifetime warranty, and being a Ruger, I think one could do a lot worse. Congrats on your new toy, and let us know how it performs.

I rented the 9mm RAP and my impression was it's a top quality piece for the price. It shoots great, I like the trigger. Good balance, well designed and built. I got some chafing on my thumb from the beavertail, which put me off, so I doubt I'll be buying one
I understand that some people have a deep loathing for S&W, but I've always liked the M&P line, and I plan to get an M&P45 soon.

Seems a bit heavy for my liking...............................but, every pistol is a good pistol, right??????????:)
No Smith hate. They just mark every Walther with SW name n logo

My son fired one of the first released from Ruger. H&H Firearms in OKC provided the weapon and ammo. He reported it is a bit on the chunky side but has usable ergonomics and the trigger beats Glock by a mile. It is not as nice as a SIG P320 trigger tho. The "I never met a gun that was not flawless," bull hockey from Gunblast appears to like it.

Did he say it was a dandy pistol?
I don't like Gunblast all that much... Hickock 45... he's the real thing, and he's a good communicator - a key issue.
Just got a text with trackin' number. Nice! Should be in Monday.
Ruger's American Pistol (45) marketing is a bunch of hooey!
They say:
Special cam, so we've got a lighter slide. Except, the slide is heavier than the SR-45's slide.
Lighter trigger pull. Except, its the same as the SR-45.
Shorter takeup. Its longer than their ... SR-45.
Shorter reset. Its longer than the SR-45.
This is getting boring. I have no idea what they're up to with the newer pistol. The innards are not like the SR-45 at all, and not like anything else out there.
There are six pins in the chassis, or fire control housing. Complex!
So I snooped the patent drawings, and... they don't match the drawings in the manual.
Don't ya love a good mystery?
~~
And what this amounts to, is that all the folks out there who "reviewed" the pistol, just used Ruger's talking points and really... never took the time to evaluate, or compare anything on their own. Hickock .45 has been silent!

Did he say it was a dandy pistol?
His only down comment is the grip feels a bit "fat in his hands.

For those of us paying attention Hickok 45 has had other more pressing matters to attend to lately. He will get to it soon enough. It really is interesting that you are panning a pistol based upon NEVER having it in your hand. Geesh. IMHO it is better to speak After you have had the opportunity to operate the weapon and NOT before.
Oh, even if its a dud for me, and it may be, I'll keep it with no regrets. Ruger and .45acp... not a bad combination.
I just find some of what Ruger presented in their hype vs what actually is, rather different, in an interesting sort of way.
FWIW, I'm really happy with the lowly Charter Arms 45 revolver, and if I can be happy with that I'm sure the Ruger will be fine.
And... me and Mr. Dremel (aka Foredom) are good pals.
