I saw a nice revolver now I NEED A NEW ONE. Help me pick. I am thinking a S&W Model 60 three inch .357 or a Ruger SP101 2.25" Wiley Clapp Edition.
I think for something completely new to me I will highly polish it. I have a Smith model 63 three inch in 22 caliber and love it. Will the 357 model 60 hold up shooting 357 or will it become a 38? I think the Ruger don't care as it looks heavier.

Or....maybe it's just time to be committed.

I've shot both back to back and preferred the Ruger. Grips are better and recoil is not that bad with .357. It took real well to a trigger job too. I think the Wiley Clap already has some trigger improvements? Ours is a regular SP101 with gutter sights. It belongs to the Mrs. now. With that said, If I was gonna shoot .38s through it, I'd get the Smith in 2.125 inch barrel. Not sure why...:der: Just want one I guess...

I held two examples of the Ruger and was quite pleased with both. They are still at the shop I held them and calling my name.
Probably won't happen but I still think about them often.

IMHO anything less than a 3" barrel, you might as well shoot .38 +p, you get about the same performance without the pain.
I have an older Model 60-7 (pre.357) and it's a sweet little shooter, but the Ruger looks "tougher" to me.

As b4 said, the Ruger takes well to spring changes and polishing. The trigger on my wife's SP is smooth, light, and actually got her interested in shooting again. After the work, it's one of the best triggers I've felt on a revolver. She shoots it double action. Revolvers are what I cut my teeth on, and I always owned Smith's, but this pistol is just nice. It's a little tank. The wife shoots mags out of it with not much of an issue. I find that the stock grip is nice, fits her hand. A bit small for mine, but there are plenty of grips out there for this little power house. Chigs grips would be a start. It's priced a couple hundred lower than the Smith, and I am surprised by some of the triggers on the new Smith's. Heavy, gritty, need lots of work. I shot my friends wife's Smith .38, and the trigger pull was horrible The Smith will hold up to .357's, but I wouldn't feed it regularly. I didn't do a lot of shopping around, but I believe I paid around $560 for the Wiley Clapp. If you would notice, both firearms occasionally will come with a hammer that's a bit off center. May need a bit of shim work. The wife's did. It really doesn't affect too much, but any unnecessary rubbing of parts is never good. I just want to know, you mentioned polishing...........................it's not going to be green??????????????????????????:p

I have a Mod 60 (J-frame) in .357 and a Mod. 64 (K-frame) in 38 sp. both with 3" barrels, and they are very well balanced and very accurate firearms. Just for thee record the Mod. 64 is quite possibly the overall best feeling revolvers I have ever owned and that includes a slew of Performance Center guns.

I love my Ruger gp100 3 inch and the trigger was nice out of the box but after I polished everything and put a lighter hammer spring it will make you say WOW. It responded real well to the trigger work.

That said I have a performance center j-frame that is super smooth so I think you cant go wrong. As you said the Rugers are heavier and may hold up to 357 better.

Clearly the S&W!

Get both, of course.

I have the SP101 snubbie and it's really amazing. .357 makes it flip, but it's not bad to shoot.

I have a little SP101 in 22 for the wife. My plan originally was to get her a SP101 in 38 so she could practice with near exact guns. She ended up with a Smith 638 which I just helped the trigger a little bit on a while back. I need to work on the 22, trigger could be fixed up a bit.

Speaking of 638, I got a message from JFootin yesterday. Been wondering about him and his status. He's still keeping on keeping on and doing good. Still has his mirror polished MK9? K9? can't remember which. A beauty for sure.

What about a 3" SP101 with Meprolight tritium front sight and Chigs panels? The wife likes hers.

I know we're talking SP101 here, but my pre-SP six inch stainless Security Six is my favorite. Handles magnums well, but is more fun with .38s.

You guys are not making this any easier.... I went to Ahlman's today to pick up my LC9s and of course they had S&W 60 Pro, S&W 60 Standard [both 3"] and a sweet SP101 3" Ruger there. I hate them![Ahlman's...they are also not helping- told me to take my pick and they would knock 10% off the price].

It must be pure hell living close to Ahlmans. If I ever got there I'd be there for days drooling, and crying, and suffering with a huge smile on my face.

I recalled that the Rugers I held were Talo's, had some fancy engraving on them, slicked up triggers a bit. Nice.

Wouldn't do a lick of good if I told you your grounded Mr. and can't go within 500 feet of Ahlmans, I know your going, might as well get it over with and not add to the suffering.

MrsToad and I are partial to her older SP101. Okay, it's not the Wiley Clapp edition, but as an SP101 with a 3" barrel it's a lot of fun to shoot.

I have a Model 60-9 (2 1/8" barrel) and a 4" SP101.
I've put quite a few .357 rounds through the 60-9 over the years and it has held up well. IMO, no worries there.
I bought the SP101 to be a potent companion on some hikes. What I found is that I'm more likely to carry my 4" Security Six or a 1911 when hiking in the areas that I intended the SP101 for. OWB carry and with suspenders, I feel the weight savings of the SP101 does not negate the extra rounds of the other two (or, in the Security Six's case, I could include a lighter Speed Six).
If we put barrel length and intended purpose aside, I think my Smith has a better trigger and a lot more grip options than my Ruger.
158 grain .357 loads will get your attention in either gun. Both of my guns came with rubber grips that help in regards to that, but I've put wood on both (and back to rubber on the Ruger).
Regards,
Greg

I let a LNIB Ruger SP101 snubbie @ $300 slip through my fingers.
Had just bought a S&W 65-3 ($525) and 640-1 ($500) snubbie.
And felt like I'd already spent enough money on guns for a while...
The 3" Heavy Barrel 65 I wasn't even shopping for.
Just couldn't pass up the 3" K Frame.

There's a danger in regularly checking the used gun case - LOL!:p

All right, here's my gp100, 10 lb. hammer spring. Had to move back up to the 10 lb. trigger spring from the 8 because I could force trigger reset problems plus it was lighter than my liking. It's so smooth makes you think the kahr trigger is terrable which it aint.

I'm partial to Rugers but wouldn't the Smith be lighter to tote around?

Bought my SP in 1993:

There is only about an oz+ difference in weight between the two.....................................the Ruger being heavier, but not by much.

It's fun doing the customizing. I would have chosen the Ruger, just because of how sweet you can get the trigger. They sure make a lot of grips for these revolvers. You will enjoy............................................. .

Thanks for the link. I didn't even know about that store and I live and PT work just a few minutes away. As for the Mod. 60, great choice. Hold off on grips, you may find those will serve you well. I have a Mod.60 Pro and I put a Wolff hammer spring and 14# rebound slide spring after a slight smoothing and re-lubing of of some internals. Much smoother, and still totally reliable. The gun came out too nice as my daughter shot it and immediately claimed it as hers.

I took it out a put few rounds through it and am very happy. Couldn't hold off on grips...fell in love some walnut ones and got them for both the 60 and the 63.
