Hi all, I hope some of you knowledgeable gurus can answer this for me.
I have a PM9 with external safety, is it safe to pocket carry with the safety off?
I know there are PM9's without the thumb safety so is there any difference in the way they operate?
Thanks

That depends, mostly on you.
The ones without the safety have a longer trigger pull.

Thanks Alfonse, I was unaware there was a difference in the internal workings of the two.

Unless it is securely retained in a holster which fully covers the entire trigger guard, any gun is not safe to carry. This is regardless of whether it has an external safety or not. As Alfonse stated, the PM9 with the external safety (model PM9193) does have a shorter trigger pull, so it would be less safe to carry it with the safety off.

The only truly 'safe' method of carry is Israeli style with a full mag but no round in the chamber, which is actually arguably less safe since your defensive weapon is not ready to fire.

p.s., I have that same PM9 with the external safety and only carry it IWB in a full kydex holster.

Isn't there a California approved safety model that has the same normal long trigger pull which would be safe to carry safe off using a proper holster and intelligent trigger finger.

The Gen 2's with safety have a shorter pull and probably benefit from having the thumb safety in or out of California.

Funny how when I see something is approved for California I don't want it anymore, be it a gun or a car or anything else.

As of yet, I have only carried it with safety on. Can you recommend a good pocket holster and a good IWB holster?

Just be careful of mixing up your normal carry... safety ON, safety OFF, with any change of method... pocket carry with or without holster to cover un-safetied trigger.

In the "heat of battle" you might get confused and cause delay while trying to unsafe an already un-safed pistol... or thinking it's un-safed and not getting the expected bang!

I don't like safeties on my defensive firearms and carry with the chamber loaded... always, as it's not loaded without +1, and requires two hands to chamber a round. My pistols are always in holsters when they are loaded, even defensive pre-positioned ones.

What ever you decide, you will have to train and get used to your draw and presentation procedures so that you have developed the proper "muscle memory" that will aid your performance under stressful conditions.

From the "armchair non-expert", but I practice and use situational awareness to try to stay ahead of any developing situations.

Great post Wynn. Bold added for emphasis to the point I really agree with you on.

My personal methodology is that any gun I have with a chambered round is in a holster, whether being carried or in my safe. Any unholstered firearm in my safe is stored Israeli style with a full mag and empty chamber: almost loaded and almost ready to go.

I only carry my PM9 IWB, and in a Cooks holster. The gun disappears in this holster on my hip.

If you carry an unchambered firearm, you might as well carry a hammer. No safeties on my firearms. You don't want to be doing anything with your thumbs, while under pressure. That's where the saying all thumbs came from.:p

Desantis Nemesis for front pocket............Cook's or High Noon for IWB.
