Well, a trip out to the Oatman Massacre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_Oatman) site got off to a memorable start when a heater hose burst about 20 miles from home. Fortunately, the correct tools for the job were on board and we finished the day without incident (about 200 miles total of desert and hardtop travel). My Mora side knife made quick work on the bad section of the hose.

Replacing the hoses was a much more difficult proposition. One end requires removing the alternator. The heater ends are up under the cowling in a difficult spot to reach. A lot of work on this end is done blind, in an awkward position. I tried cutting the hoses off with a razor knife, but couldn't get enough leverage and was having difficulty seeing what I was doing. I ended up trying a pruning knife and it cut all the hoses off with little effort.

For a little firearm content:
I picked up a well worn S&W Model 36 at a gun show recently that turned out to be a good shooter.
Here's a shot of it with the rubber grips that came on it (I had put some cold blue on the barrel by this point):

I decided to forgo any further bluing touch up, but did swap out the rubber for some polished stag and a Tyler "T" grip adapter:

That was quick thinking and a good solid temporary repair. I've carried an emergency tool box in my Grand Marquis for years, but I've only used it to assist others. That's a nice little Model 36.

When I grow up I want to be Greg! That was a great idea using ratchet extensions to plug up the heater hose ends with....I don't believe I would have thought of that but it seemed to work very well....That sure is a nice old Smith you found and those Stag grips and Tyler T give that "Old School" look....Very nice find!

Real nice Smith and Wesson. I always carry a tool kit and a manual for each car. I don't keep a firearm in the vehicle, just on me.

Your new handle is MacGyver. Good thinking. Love the 36. Sweet looking gun.

Thanks for sharing that. That link on the Oatman Massacre was interesting. Shows you how they lived 150 years ago.

Thank you all for your kind comments (my wife got a chuckle out of the stud thing :)).
I'd like to spend more time out that way; there's a lot of history (Mormon Battalion, Overland Mail, etc.) and some just plain weird stuff (IE: Sundad (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206037240075812&set=ms.c.eJxN0jkSAzAIA8AfZTiEgP9~%3BLKTIWI2LHQ4b4x ZGyw6YdY3Hx~%3B9SiKazn7RVsRoisCYpWVNb3Nonu1l3vqwEm YOmyO5O0Z5UtA9jRAo93BZh~_XSkyCKnVypzrNfkXdnVu2Elct 03XbpP1ElLzCBy4a8yfCos~_nUHK~_CAi9xAHPu6o~_sCKDdEb 4X3vpdiPOkDiNTJipT9mgPvzuU5E~%3Bc9TyI9YmZEeLJMkSt~ _XyRZiUA6KdI2GSkxSEPmSAwQlvASuWVJ4G1C8SaRm9L9fsdgM vnqSSIoWWMn6SpxWSnbUrcphpu~%3BCOIm6HLn20ugzUVuDW78 rw7tl7XeX1V6nmU~-.bps.a.10206037238435771.1073741840.1405731246&type=3&theater)).

...a little dusty out there in the desert Greg? Great roadside improv. And do I hear a little singing from that pruner? There's something about that one... :)

Yes sir, it does get a little dusty out here and the inside of that Jeep is worse than the engine compartment!:w00t:
That pruner does sing some...done a good job at the tasks I've put it to and I like (now) that the handles came unfinished. They've developed some charm from the sweat, oil, grease, dirt, plant juice, and a little blood being applied to them.

Greg

Greg, I don't know you, but you appear to be way to crafty and classy to be hanging around with us low life here on Kahrtalk.

What gives, boredom or just deranged?

Gifted for sure and we're very fortunate that he shares the air with the rest of us mere humans (on some I use the term human quite loosely)on Kahrtalk.

Sure pulled my teet out of the ringer more than a few times, that's for sure.
