View Full Version : CM9 failure to go into battery

I just picked up a new CM9 last week. I took it home, cleaned it and prepped it like all my other Kahrs. I took it to the range and experienced failure to return to battery about 50 to 60% of the time. It seemed like the slide was catching on something. Sometimes the slide would lock open without engaging the slide stop. A tap at the back of the slide would return it to battery. I put 150 rounds through it and just thought it was a break in problem. I took it back home, cleaned it again and went back to the range today. Same story after another 150 rounds. The take down and reassembly on this gun is frustrating. Sometimes the slide will lock on the frame and has to be forced off. Other times the slide will not go back on without jiggling or forcing it on. I wonder if this is a guide rod/recoil spring problem? I have owned 7 other Kahrs so while I am not a gunsmith, I am familiar with these guns. I still own a CT9 and a TP45.

Could your ammo possibly be responsible? What brand were you using?
From the trouble you're having with disassembly, your frame may have issues.

I used 4 different kinds of ammo, Magtech, Sellor and Belloit, Winchester White Box and Colt JHP made by Black Hills ammo. It's definitely not the ammo.

Send it back to The Mothership and let them figure it out.

When I put my CM9 back together, if I don't make sure the end/tip of the pigtail looking recoil spring assembly is rotated down pointing towards the barrel, the gun sometimes will fail to go into battery completely as if its catching on something during function testing. Took me awhile to figure out why it would function great after a cleaning and then sometimes would not. Fine now that I know to do that every time. I don't know why that would make a difference but it does for mine. Just throwing that out there. Good luck.
with the magazine out rack the slide all the way back, & work it back & forth in an attempt to figure out where it may be catching on...Sound's like it really needs a good break it.... But then of course, try different ammo

It's possible that the extractor is a bit on the tight side and won't allow the case to align with the chamber properly. Some have remedied this problem by removing a few thousandths of an inch of metal from the heel of the extractor. That's the part the the extractor that the front extractor pin rides against. Proceed with caution on a trial and error basis until the gun goes into battery full without hanging up. You shouldn't have to remove more that .020 at most.

When I put the barrel and guide rod/spring assembly in the slide the tip of the guide rod doesn't fit flush with the slide. It is recessed about an 1/8 of an inch and a little cockeyed. Will Kahr send me a new guide rod and spring or will I have to send the gun in?

They're probably going to want you to send the pistol back just to be double safe that everything is ok with the gun. But first before assuming anything, just give their C/S a phone call & try your best to describe what is happening. They may provide a solution to you over the phone, or just simply send you a new part...

I can't even visualize what you're talking about, can you post a pic? Actually sounds a little like this problem.. http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?1612-CW45-%28and-other-poly-45%29-issues-and-fixes&p=306968#post306968

I agree with this above. I actually found a video on YouTube that demonstrated this and it has definitely helps. Here's a link to my original post with video link:

Yes. Exactly. Thanks for sharing the video. Just remembering this little step when reassembling has eliminated the issue with mine for whatever reason.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I just received a shipping label from Kahr. I'll let them sort it out. Does anybody know how long it currently takes for warranty work.

First time is pretty quick, a little longer for the 2nd trip and the third, sometimes about 9-12 weeks....just going from the posts I've been reading.:p

There's really now way for us to say or predict. It's all in how busy they are, how many guys might be off for whatever reason, what the issue is and if they have repair parts available or if they have to wait for something off the line, like a slide or a frame.
The certainly wouldn't be any consistency of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd trip on the rare occasions when multiple trips are needed.

I just took my CT9 and TP45 to the range this weekend. The range session spurred me to call Kahr cs to check on my CM9. I was told that they have my gun but haven't started the repair yet. I am willing to be patient if the CM9 comes back 100%. I love my Kahrs. I have owned quite a few without any problems. I really want to have as much confidence in Kahr cs as I do in their products.

I got my CM9 back today. They replaced the recoils springs and polished the feed ramp. The invoice indicates that it has been test fired with no problems. The action is much smoother with no hesitation or hangups. I'll take it to the range soon to check out it's functioning. I picked up a CT380 last week so I'll take that out on it's maiden voyage at the same time.

Good fortune to you with both.

I got the CM9 and the new CT380 out to the range today. I'm happy to say the CM9 worked flawlessly. I put 100 rounds of American Eagle 115 gr. fmj through it without any problems. Kudos to Kahr customer service. By the way my new CT380 was also flawless on it's first outing. 100 rounds of Sig 380 fmj, 50 rounds of WWB fmj and 35 rounds of Remington HTP jhp. Looks like my carry rotation just increased by two.
