View Full Version : I'm totally screwed!
I've got this air cleaner on my Harley. Really nice in most respects, it used button head screws to hold its cover on (and K&N filter in).
Tried to clean the filter. Couldn't get the screws out. It had been a while. One broke free, the other had to be drilled out.
So, I ordered up some "shouldered" thumb screws. Three times, from three different places. No shoulders. No matter what it said in my order, somehow, they didn't ship anything with a shoulder. Tried Amazon, and two local screw and fastener distributors. Same thing.
So I decided to make my own:

Maybe not quite as pretty as a "factory made" screw, they're workable.

I've made a bunch of fasteners and brackets and such over the years. Sometimes, can't get just what you need. Nice looking fasteners, CJB!

Great job. It's funny how owning a Harley makes you an inventor. I've owned Harleys and restored antique trucks for many years. Be totally lost without my shop. (By the way being totally screwed is better than being half screwed.) Mechanically speaking of course.

2004 Wide Glide, upped from 88 to 96 cid, Andrews 21 cams and a SuperTrapp 2-1 exhaust. Also known as the Joe Minton build, about 100ft/lbs at usable rpns, and 90 something HP at rpms I dont use.

There ya go. Not the best picture, but handy. From a few years back, after cams, before SuperTrapp.
So... the screwed problem is resolved. Time for a drink!

CJB, I do like your style. Thanks for the pix
Iron head sportys then soft tail then FLH classic. I went for comfort as I got older although that soft tail really was a nice ride all around IMHO.
I thought the super trap exh was a gimmick when it came out but my butt dyno said it was not.
I almost bought an iron head Sporty, an 85, the last year they made 'em. There was a f'up at the dealer and I got a first year evo 883 instead. Then a '94 1200 Sporty, then this on.
BTW, thats me in the 2nd picture. Center of the bottom row of jelloshots!
