View Full Version : Governor inbound, so much for a .22!

I've been Jones'n around for a Ruger MKIII 22/45 and low... the bug hit. Got a call. Like new, literally less than a box of .45ACP through it, never had a shotshell or .45LC fired in it. Traded back in a week after purchase. A nice scratch free stainless Smith Governor. A sucker for anything 45, and the price was VERY attractive. Very. I had my buddy seal the deal, and its on its way down to Florida, and my FFL.

Also, met online a nice sort of bloke who makes up little plugs for the Hillary hole, this eliminating the hole, and the slot in the frame for "the flag" that appears when modern S&W revolvers are locked. So, I got one of those inbound too, as I don't really want a lock on a revolver.... which makes about as much sense as printing "This End Toward Sexual Partner" on the tip of a condrum.

Guess we'll see how she shoots.

No pics yet, won't be in till Monday.

The best round I've ever shot for a Judge or Gov'nor is the Nobel Sport multi ball (they call it buckshot). In 2-1/2 inch, for the Gov'nor, you get 3x .400 cal balls at 900fps. Each one weighs about 95 grains or so. I think of it as firing three .380 ACP all at once. With the 3 inch, as in a 3" Judge, you get 4x .400 cal balls at a slightly lower 850fps. More lead, less velocity, but that's 380g of lead flyin' at regular .45ACP velocity.

Since I had (still have technically, its on extended loan), a 3" Judge, I got to shoot both the 2-1/2 and 3 inch Nobel Sport loads in it. Here's the interesting part.... You always get vertical stringing, as the balls follow each other out the barrel as the pistol is recoiling, and thus changing its bore in relation to the target. This ain't a target load. This is a man killin load (or racoon as the case may be). At six feet, you'll get four holes you can cover with three fingers. At 15 feet, your four holes will be covered by four fingers. I believe there is some discrepancy at close ranges, since the revolver is not only changing its angle, but moving laterally. At longer distances... I think the angle comes into play more, and later move (up) remains fixed at a certain amount of distance. In math terms, think of it as something like 3 degrees (at whatever distance) plus 3/4's of an inch, no matter what distance. The values for degrees and inches are totally made up... I have no clue as to the actual numerical values.

Just so happens I got 20 boxes of the 2-1/2 inch loads sitting right here... should be nice little addition.

My son has a Governor. It's quite pleasant to shoot and the trigger is quite decent.
He got some nasty loads for it, don't recall where but it's like throwing little chunks of scrap iron. Irregular shaped, kind of jagged edged mixed in with shot.

Nasty stuff.

I have bought quite a few from John. Good product but he is not real well organized on shipping. He forgets who ordered and does not send tracking info. He unfortunately messed up every order I have made, but always makes it wright. Just have patience when ordering.

I thought about the Governor, but think I may need a short barrel S&W 460. They shoot 460's, 454's and 45 long colts.

I have shot that, and its 3 inch cousin in my Judge. I was not impressed. The BB's are so so, and the "defense disks" are nothing to write home about.

I also shot 7-1/2s, 6s, 4s, 00, 000, slugs, and the 40 cal multiballs. Of all of those, the 40 cal balls were the most destructive. One hit in the torso from those, and the BG would have a very very bad time of it. A hit in the arm might actually require amputation as the hole would be about 1/2 inch by two inches or maybe two and a half inches. Someplace I have some pictures of the holes in plywood. Just destructive as hell.

The Gov'nor got picked up. Cosmetically 100 percent. Looks unfired.

And, I know why it looks unfired. It doesn't work!

A quick teardown revealed bone dry innards, and.... no spring for the little double action doohicky on the hammer.

If you hold the revolver upside down, you can pull it through, double action. Hold it right side up, and you get cylinder spin but no hammer cock.

Single action is fine.

I cannot say that the pistol ever looked disassembled, nor fired except for the wee bit of grunge from factory test.

Scoured all manner of disposable products looking for a spring thats maybe 2mm in diameter (if that). Nada.

Brownells is out, Midway don't carry 'em. Gonna call S&W tomorrow and see if they'll sell me one.

For effectively half price... I can live with a little grief of minor repair!

I think whoever was owner #1 bought it, it had problems, and it sat until trade in time, or he just unloaded it or something... dunno.

I can't believe I get to be the first one that says pictures or it didn't happen.

I always get beat. No rush. I know what a Govna looks like and feels like but you know we all like pictures.

You can see... relative size next to a Vaquero .45 and a RIA Colt Police Positive clone.

And... I think I found a donor spring. Inside a leftover Seiko watch strap pin... which is stainless! Diameter looks real close, but I'm probably gonna have to fiddle with the length some to get it as it ought to be. If not, Smith gets a call for a part I guess. Brownell's $1.16 for the part, so its not a huge problem, except the wait.

Very happy to report - the Seiko springbar "spring" worked.

So much so, in fact, I'll pass along this tip:

Common Seiko 2.1 (or is it 2mm) springbar for SEIKO DIVER'S WATCHES
Grab the plunger with pliers. Use a wire cutter to grab (not dent or cut) the tube of the springbar, and wedge the wire cutter against the other pliers to force the tube from the plunger.
Go fish out the spring with a paperclip.
Cut the spring long enough to fit into the hole in the hammer's "sear", plus length to touch the corresponding face of the hammer, plus two coils.
Install and test.

Works like a champ - plus - as stated earlier, the Seiko spring is "stainless" to marine environs. Their springbars literally never rust out from saltwater use.

All's well that end's well. No begging Smith for a spring, and no trip back to Mass. for the gov'nor.

Gonna get loaded with .410 tonite and carried, just because I can.

If you can fix your gun with a Seiko watch spring I'd like to see what you do with duct tape and chicken wire. ;)
