View Full Version : Got Pulled Over....
...in Illinois day before yesterday. No ticket...it was a wanted to check me out misunderstanding. Good cop, friendly chat. Asked if I had any weapons in the car when I needed to reach for my DL. Said yes, asked where, said console. Handed over my CO carry permit with my DL and all stayed friendly cool. Sometimes the system just works....even in IL.

It is all about attitude. If the driver has a good attitude almost anything can be dealt with politely. If the driver has a bad attitude well they bought the ticket so they cannot complain about the ride.
It really wasn't a ticket or not situation. Post was more about how well out of state driver, loaded handgun admittedly within easy reach was dealt with. A couple years back that would have been a big, big no-no in not firearms friendly IL. No doubt it helped I've been on the other side of something like this and well knew how to behave, but still.... I was impressed.

IL has come a long ways to the right side. I doubt the reaction would be so good in say NY, NJ, CA.

It depends on the cop and what kind of day he's been having, but it depends a LOT on how you act. I'm always VERY respectful and don't lie. In 30 years I got one ticket... 77 in a 70 zone in Kentucky... $142!! But I was respectful... polite and honest. I didn't volunteer that I was carrying, but would have if I had to get out of the vehicle. I've been stopped a few other times and should have gotten a ticket for each, but for some reason I didn't.
I do have a Florida Sheriffs' Youth Ranch tag on the car and my small, plain Vietnam flag bumper sticker, but politeness and respect go a long way.

These days, there are a lot of unsavory elements that present day LEOs have to beware of. Most of them can smell a rat, so, if you don't act like a rat, you aren't treated like one. +1 on the respect, they're just doing their job.

True, but in those states I wouldn't have been traveling with a loaded firearm in the car...let alone in the passenger compartment. I do CO to Maine a couple times a year. That entails a day of travel through NY, CT, and Mass. Guns go in the trunk unloaded and hard case locked up separate from mags and ammo from PA until NH. My CO permit covers me for all other than those three and Maine on that route and I have a non-resident Maine permit.
