View Full Version : Is the NRA wasting members $$$$$?

So I've been seeing a lot of really nice NRA TV ads. Well done, good actors, compelling stories. However, I've only seen them on FOX News. I'm wondering if the NRA is wasting member's money with (Expensive) ads that are preaching to the choir. Wouldn't the ads do more for RKBA, gun rights, and membership if they were placed on the "Liberal" media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, etc.? Of course it's possible those networks wouldn't accept the ads for broadcast. Just my $0.02.

Those networks you mentioned generally have an editorial policy that prevents them from accepting/airing any ads that diverge from their political slant.

Ditto the above! If the ads don't fit in with their way of thinking these liberal stations are not interested in running them. Personally, I'm happy to see the NRA ads on Fox. For years I have contributed to the NRA without ever seeing a TV ad but have been instead receiving lots of mailers asking for more donations. I think the ads bring in more members and hence, more financial support and maybe fewer mailers.

In my view, the only reason to belong to the NRA is it gives them strength when lobbying congress critters. If they had 30 million members we would have a lot less to worry about. Over time, being a NRA Life Member is pretty low cost.
Other than that, give to local groups, ILA, and NSSF. They are the guys that take BS laws to court.

Look at the network ratings, Fox News has way more viewers, so the ads reach more people.

So apparently, you haven't noticed all of the cases that the NRA takes to court. If it wasn't for the NRA, you'd probably be shooting a firearm with a chip in it, that tells the gov't how, where and when you fire your firearm. Your ammo would probably be $100+ per box because of all of the taxes piled on by anti's in gov't. Your firearm would have ambi safeties, mag safeties, key lock safeties, and fingerprint readers. Your average firearm would be in excess of $1000. You would be required to register your firearm every other year, and if you didn't own it anymore, you'd have to explain where it went. Just a few of the things that they keep on top of. Of course, you don't have to give them any money, or belong to such a useless group. That's what makes this country great.

I saw their ads on National Geographic channel last night.

I saw something once about Fox viewers being 60 something percent liberals. So it is the right place to place the ads.
Not my money at this point. Haven't sent them any in mebbe 15 years.
Almost nobody watches MSNBC. Their viewership has never been great. I think Al Jazeera actually beat out MSNBC a few times.
CNN is a complex. They are seen as (wrongly) "neutral" and there for shown lots in off hours at bars and Duncan Donut, barber shops, and all sorts of "public" places that leave TV's on for general viewership. It is often the only "news" channel in smaller motels and hotels all over North America. Its "at home only" viewership does not compare as favorably as one might imagine, but if you add in the "at large" audiences, then their viewership is respectable. Dunno if folks actually "watch" or just like having it on so they can see something as a distraction. Often the sound is off, or so low you really can't make it out anyway.
On the other hand, Fox has the lion's share of viewership, and as pointed out, its has conservative, liberal (who you cannot change anyway) and moderates as viewers. The latter is where those commercials are targeted (no pun).

AGREED!
But the fight to keep our rights will go through the roof if Hilary gets elected!
One of the first things she will try to do is allow people to sue the firearms companies for wrongful death etc.

You do understand the NRA and ILA are members of the same family. The NRA wants members to show numbers to congress, the ILA is a super pac that lobbies congress.

For the reasonable amount of money they want for membership I feel its worthwhile. I spend more money on BS.

surprised this thread is here with the closing of the political forum. The NRA is a political organization plain and simple and, for me who lives in Kalifornia, a complete waste of money.

Only because it's directly firearms related but probably right at the line anyhow.
You have my sympathy living in Kalifornia where nearly everything is a waste of money.
We got room for you up north here but frankly so many from there have come here so I'm not sure it would be much of an improvement.
Myself I'm looking hard at Montana or Wyoming.

^^^ yeah, I guess this thread probably belongs in the RKBA Discussion vs. the General Discussion.
^^^^^^^ but are you sure the NRA is a complete waste for Kalifornians? Who knows how bad it could be?

Lets see....in order to have an auto pistol in Kali it has to be on the approved DOJ list. The DOJ list is falling in numbers to a very alarming rate b/c no manufacturers want to deal with Kali's strict requirements to sell here.. not all counties allow a CCW in the State.... We have Senate bills in the works limiting ammo sales and surtaxing ammo as well as a needed BR check to purchase ammo... The DOJ goes into a store that sells 80% lowers demanding the names of the those that bought them and when the proprietor refuses to give them up, he is shut down and got a G beat down. Where is the NRA? Oh they are always sending me requests to re up my membership, but never anything about how they are helping or trying to help here in Kali. Yep a waste of money here in this State. I think the NRA gave up on us. Its OK...save yourselves b/c the cancer will spread from here. Bawanna wants to sever this State from the rest of the country and I agree with him. He knows that cutting off the infected finger could save the patient.

That's exactly what I want to do but save yourself and your family. There's still time
I love you man and no need for you to get flushed down the drain with the cess pool called Kalifornia.
Cutting off the infected area don't always work. Doc told me I had an infection, told him just cut it off. He said it was in my head. Not good, not good at all.

haha we must have the same doc. I had the same situation but the doc said he couldn't find my head b/c it was wedged so far up my arse.

I had a little piece cut out of my brain years ago (I think it's the part that tells right from wrong or possible the care or not care part).
Prior to the deployment of the sharp cutting tools I of course had to get MRI or Cat Scan or one of them things.
I asked the person if there was any evidence of a brain. Those guys got zero sense of humor let me tell ya.
The hilarious part is after the removal about a week later when I'm in a regular room a nurse comes in, pulls the blanky off my feet and tells me to wiggle my toes! I tried hard as I could believe me I did but couldn't do it. I thought she was gonna faint, turned all white. I told her to look at my chair, it isn't hospital issue, haven't moved my toes in 15 years at that time.
I thought it funny as heck, I don't think she did.

Yeah Knkali, I certainly understand all that. You have my sincere sympathies. I'm just wondering if it would be any worse if the NRA wasn't out there at all. Imagine how quick Kalifornia would ban/confiscate if there was anti 2A precedent in some other state, or if Heller were reversed, as examples...

yes, I understand your point(s) completely. I would like to say that the NRA has slowed the decay of gun rights here in Kali, but I cannot say so with certainty. However, I can say with certainty that the NRA has NEVER be a detriment here in Kali. Dig?

Speaking of hospital humor: While in an Air Force hospital ward recuperating from a broken arm suffered in an auto accident, this young AF nurse comes up to me and says, "How's your arm?", to which I replied, "Same as yesterday." To which she asked, "How so?" and I said, "Broken." Well, the entire ward cracked up laughing and the nurse turned red in the face and immediately left the ward. To this day, I regret not having the opportunity to see this nurse again to apologize to her for my gross behavior but at the time, I too was laughing along with all of my fellow patients. Yes, hospital people tend to get serious about their patients and tend to lose some appreciation for humor.

I've probably told this before but when I was in the hospital for a month after breaking my back I of course got to know all the nurses, one was cuter than heck but that's another story.
Most people there were much older than I with strokes or heart attacks and getting rehab. Everybody on the floor was in a wheelchair for some reason.
I got to know this older couple real well, they were there before me and took me under their wing so to speak.
He came every day to visit his wife. He was in a chair too, he could walk but had something where he'd just fall down once in a while.
Anyhow he brought me good coffee everyday. Hospital coffee always sucks, everybody knows that.
Anyhow after several weeks I conspired with his wife and one of the nurses to help me get in bed with his wife early before he showed up. She was probably late 60's I was 40 so it was all in fun.
The look on his face, I wish we'd of thought to have a camera. Still chuckle about that one.
I got lots of hospital stories.
I'll share the one about the shrink again one of these days, time to close up shop and head for home.
Today is a granddaughter day so time to play.

And internet ads too!
I don't know that NRA commercials convince people of much. Although I don't know that they don't work wonders either.
Arguments are no longer made using facts and data. Everyone gets butt hurt if you disagree with them yet they have no rational argument to support their claims. Most have decided that if we can't be right, outyelling our opponent will make us so.
I don't think any commercial by the NRA or Planned Parenthood will change many minds. We've become accustomed to tuning out opposing views because those opposing us too often resort to taunts and derision to make their argument.
I try to be a responsible, rational gun owner. I don't seek out 2A discussions but I don't avoid them either. I think the strongest message I can personally deliver on RKBA is this - with the 24 hour news cycle we hear about gun violence because it sells. What we don't hear about in our country is genocide, forced labor camps, the disappearance of our neighbors, the SS, or ethnic cleansing. We can thank the 2A for that.
Sorry for the rant. I'm just tired of all the noise.
