I like to use ones I don't have ankle holsters for or don't carry regular so they don't feel neglected or left out and develop one of them phobias and end up curled up on the kitchen floor in a fatal position leaking gun oil all over the floor and such.

I sure like the feel of it handling. It's a bit weird to shoot. Can't really hold it right like a handgun and no buttstock to shoot it like a rifle.
I think it would be sweet as an SBR. Put a short but useable buttstock on it and you'd really have something.
It shoot pretty good certainly at home defense range. Hey it worked for Steve in Dead or Alive, should work for me.
I have a 92 clone in 45 Colt. One of my favorites for sure.
In real life I have a Para Ordnance P14-45 LDA in the night stand. 14 rounds or 45 and it's a sweet shooter.
I better go check and make sure it's still there, what with the storm and all. Looter don't cha know?

When I undress, I remove my EDC 1911 and place it in the night stand drawer, it then becomes my night stand gun. I'm an old dog and don't care for railed pistols, so no lights for me. Keep a good flash light in the bottom of the night stand. I know 8 rounds is not enough for some folks, but it's only got to last until I reach something more substantial. Besides, I shoot that pistol a bunch, and pretty good too, gotta be something said for familiarity with what's in your hand.
I have several high capacity polymer pistols I could use as night stand guns, actually used that as an excuse to buy at least one of them. But... I just never got in the habit of taking one out of the safe every night, and then putting it back every morning. Using my 1911 is just easier, and I always have it ready to go, plus I keep 4-5 extra loaded mags in the drawer.

My bedside self defense kit is a Xdm 5.2 45, 13 + 1,a spare mag and a cell phone with 911 punched in.
My hubby has a 930 Mossberg and a 4.0 STI 45.
I don't have my shot gun because of the field of fire and phone duty.
We also have an inexpensive alarm system and a motion triggered flood lights that come on if anyone tries to head down the hallway to our bedroom. We love a well-lite target. We fooled around with the light location in order to find the perfect location where the BG would be blinded and we would be next to impossible to see in the bedroom. As it turns out, instead of mounting the light we have it part way down the hall on a 3 rung step stool. It's the best location and the stool will slow down their progress down our hall.

I have learned a lot from this forum and from a few other internet sites….it's invaluable.
In addition to our listed setup we have planned and rehearsed our locations. For instance, the shot gun is on a portable stand so hubby can grab it on the way to the master bath (it will only take him two steps). The bathroom will provide him more concealment and some cover. I will be on the opposite side of the bed on my knees which gives me some concealment.
When we get to shoot at a gravel pit, I put my gun on an old towel and I practice grabbing it, getting to my knees (ouch) and shooting from that position. Of course when bullets fly all plans are subject to change, but at least we have a starting point.
One night about 2am our alarm went off, OH LORD. Even though we were woke from a sound sleep, we did have enough presence of mind to get to our positions firearms in hand. Thankfully it was a false alarm……..but what a rehearsal!

My wife has the Glock 43 with 8-round mags(2 spares)) and I have my Glock 21 SF with a rail light and extra mag. In my nightstand drawer is a "duty-type" belt with 4 more mags and space for the other spare mag, as well as a flashlight and a pouch for something else.
In testing at the range, the rail light came off the rail... to my surprise... after a box or so of shooting, so I'll have to keep that in mind if there's a prolonged gunfight, proving again that it's good to test your setups!
My around the house gun, the P380 with NS, resides on the night stand, too.

Always wondered how you get them 3 alarm systems to sit together like that long enough for a photo op.
Fine looking puppies. And the background makes me wish I had legs, like to walk around your area and explore. Four or five hundred miles, broken up of course ought to do it.
Big change of pace for this displaced hog farmer from Missouri and the wet Pacific Northwest.
Edit to add- and that's a fine looking Kimber too.

I'm still without a 1911.
Love shooting them.
No good reason not to have one.
Can't justify a $3K Wilson.
But I know there are some fine 1911s to be had for much less...
Phoenix and the Senoran desert are growing on me.
Particularly in the winter :D
Being able to run up into foothills and shoot outdoors is really nice.
And I love running the dirt roads in my Tacoma.

My pal Jack (the white coat) is the oldest of the three. The other two (CoCo and Wilson) will usually follow his lead when it comes to getting them to sit still for me. I'm also not above bribing them....the power of the Pup-Peroni should not be underestimated.

Thanks! They live inside with us. During the hot months, they mostly stay inside, but Coco does like to lay in the sun on the back patio. As it cools down, we start early morning hikes. These hikes gradually become longer as the weather cools more. Once winter arrives we'll go out most anytime of day and this allows for trips further from home. Beyond that, I make sure there's always water on hand and they get rattlesnake bite vaccine.

I've handled several of these and think Colt has done a good job with them. I will say that I'm not particularly fond of the blue grips or blue sight insert, but that's nit picking and I've been sorely tempted to make one my own.

I went over to the local shop as soon as I heard they had those on the shelf. I figured on bringing it home.
But I too didn't like the blue grips (not like I couldn't fix that) and the finish on the one I held wasn't great at all.
I was kind of disappointed as I wanted a Colt bad. It just wasn't the one.
There's a ton of 1911's out there for less than a 1000 easy, some a lot less. And still plenty good quality too.
My bucket list is to one day own a genuine Wilson or Ed Brown but it most likely won't happen and I don't think I'll have suffered too much not owning one.

Greg,
I've never heard of rattlesnake bite vaccine for dogs, but obviously it makes sense.
When I had dogs and hung out with dog people if the animal overheated we would throw a wet towel over them, or preferably wrap it around their trunk. Getting a cool wet towel on their belly was the best because it has less hair. Of course it's best to avoid the heat, but sometimes that can't be done, especially in a search and rescue situation. I would have loved to do search and rescue with my dogs but it wasn't to be.

I held that exact gun at the last gun show. And the price was less than $650 NIB. I think that was a good price. It was tempting but I just wasnt in the market. The guy had overstocked on Springfields and was trying to clear out some inventory but even at that no one was buying anything. He had a NIB xd-45 service model for about $360. Almost bought that one but passed and ended up getting a better deal from my local gun shop on one.

The Springfield gun is a great choice backed up by a great company. If it really gets you hooked you may choose to send it to a competent gunsmith and it will come back as good as any gun costing much more. Everyone needs to own a 1911 and, as I recently learned, an AR15. Mil spec LEGO guns are great because of all the options available.

I had one of these...............got rid of it. Just couldn't warm up to it. Lousy finish, couldn't see the sights, and you scratch the hell out of it, trying to put it back together. The slide stops aren't very user friendly. Shot alright, smooth shooter, but just too much hassle. Was a bit of play in the trigger. If I would have spent $$$$$$ on the trigger and sights, it defeats the purpose. Might as well bought a different firearm, which is what I did. I thought I needed a 1911, but I was wrong. After owning a cheaper 1911, I can't imagine how much better a $2000 one would be. Love em or hate em.................:) I see that CDNN has a bunch of 1911's on sale..........

If it's as good as the Range Officer, then it will be an excellent gun for the price.
I've not yet warmed up to a 1911 with a rail. I had a S&W "E" series with a rail, but it didn't sing to me. I would however recommend them as another excellent gun for the money:

My local shop had a higher end 1911 (Nighthawk Custom) as a range rental. I rented that pistol several times, but unfortunately I was not able to shoot it any better than my own 1911s. That's to say about 2 inches at 10 yds. That Nighthawk was probably capable of a lot more, but I'm not. It was also no more or less reliable than my own 1911s...no issues with any of them.

O ring in my Elite, Tactical and HK45c.
My understanding is that the barrel and slide are hand fitted. Guessing an oversized barrel is hand fitted to a particular slide ie fitted barrel.
Some say the Elite is the most accurate USP.
Although I believe the Expert guns my have a hand fitted barrels as well.

Yes, the Range Officer's are nicely built, loved the ramped bull barrel, but I have seen more than one of the compacts, like I had, and they are all the same as far as the finish. Horrible..........it is the blackened/parkerized finish. Breath on it wrong, and you have a permanent mark. What could I expect for $700????? Besides a few cheaper 1911's, they are all too expensive, for what you get. IF I were to ever get another, it would have to be stainless for sure.

A couple years back, some may remember the postings, I was quite seriously considering ordering out a "compact" carry Wilson in 9mm. I might well have done it but the build backlog was way too long. At this point I'm just as happy I didn't. What I would have spec'd out would have cost me over $4K. What I "settled for" was a DW ECO that set me back about $1600, gave me my Wilson didn't offer it much preferred 3.5" barrel length, and with a bit of fit and finish tweaking is for my needs every damn bit as good and imo 95% overall. I did/do have the advantage that with 1911s and Smith K and J frames I'm a quite competent roll your own smithy, but still....

I think everyone needs a 1911...and it might as well be a Colt. That said, the only one I still have is a Sig. It serves duty in the nightstand occasionally. Along with a boatload of spare mags. :)

Looking at Davidson's today and it seems the Competition model will be coming out in stainless...still has the funky blue grips, but it looks like the front sight will have a red insert. I'm liking it. :)

Stainless with the red fiber optic sight looks sweet!
A Classic Colt 1911 doesn't sound bad.
Maybe we can put together a group buy on some killer Bawanna grips?!?
Maybe stag...

I'm liking that very much. For some reason fiber optics don't generally work well for me. Maybe haven't struck the right color yet, I'm color blind add that to my list of deformity's.
No problem on the grips. Stag is still challenging but I think that would be awesome. Stag is always awesome right?

Springfield XD Tactical with TLR-HL WMLS. That is if I do not grab my suppressed SBR first.

Sig is my arch nemesis. I've tried a couple times. They are incredibly tough.
I thought Beretta's were tough but finally got those and made dozens. I surrendered to the Sigs, they win.

Nice firearm.....................had an sas model. It was a bit large for me in the grip and trigger reach. Hated to sell it, a fine firearm.

I usually keep a G19 with a TLR-4 on the nightstand, although the past few days my Apex triggered M&P45 compact has been there with the light as I took the Glock out shooting and haven't swapped the light back on it yet.....

Well I was going to post my "nightstand gun" but you already did it for me! I have a Glock 19 Gen 4 with the exact same TLR flashlight/laser combo that you have!

Nice choice! I feel super safe with that thing sitting there loaded with 16 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense. About 800 rounds though it and not a single hiccup.

Deep sleeper here, no guns on the nightstand. Would probably wake up with my own gun aimed at me, or maybe not even get a chance to wake up. My gun goes under the pillow.

I thought about that, but move around too much at night, and generally have one arm under the pillow. I have seen mattress holsters which is another option.

I'm deaf so we could take an airstrike and I'd sleep through it. Wife is the alarm system and the way she hits me indicates the severity of the emergency.
I keep my daily carry guns on top of my dresser at night, have to get in the chair before I can reach them, and the night stand gun is kind of in a cabinet where a night stand would be. I can reach it from the bed but have to make a conscious move to grab it. I want to have my wits about me at least a little bit before I take on the dragon.
Course some say I lost my wits long long ago so maybe it don't matter much.

You guys have some awfully good looking night stand guns. I keep an old (Gen 2) butt ugly Glock 17 handy hoping nobody ever sees it. In the unlikely event, it should have enough rounds even for a marginal shooter like me.

Said it once before, saying it again. Not a big fan of a dedicated night stand gun. I take off whichever of my rods I've been schlepping that day (I vary them), and it goes on the might stand. If I change by carry piece, then I do so long before bedtime. I figure if it's good enough to defend my fuzzy ass on the street, it's good enough to defend it at home. My night stand pistol exists to repel boarders, yes, it also serves to let me fight to my shot guns and rifles. I figure if the fight continues to where I need one of those, God help whomever is on the other end. I also don't like a dedicated light on my pistols, which is a whole other discussion.

I agree Jlott, my carry guns are close at hand and the night stand gun is just a bit closer but it's the same operating controls. All 1911's.
I didn't much care for the dedicated light on a pistol either. Don't need any switches or buttons on a weapon to confuse my simple mind.
Some of the guys have so much stuff on their AR 15's that they get confused which button to push to make each thing work. One of these days they'll confuse the button with the trigger and it might not be a happy ending.

The TLR-4 on my G19 is easily switched on with your trigger finger and it is BRIGHT. Your extended trigger finger is literally on it just picking up the gun. It takes no thinking whatsoever. Any intruder would be blinded by it in the dark, plus I would see the would be bad guy where I otherwise would not. I will take that light over de-cockers, safeties etc. in a threatening situation. Different strokes I guess.

I like a light, don't misunderstand me there, I just like it in my other hand. My fear is I'll be trying to turn on the light when I should already be shooting.
My light I can push for momentary on/off or flip it up or down to have it on continuous. I like the on/off option best but when it's time to go for the trigger I'll be turning the light off. I console myself with the fact that the muzzle flash should be good enough to see and blind the person I just shot.
I think it best if I just get away from the on / off mode and just flip it on and leave it on. I hang out with the officers here who are in a different situation. Stealth mode, seeing but not being seen etc.
We're in different mode, in a room waiting to defend rather than actively searching at least to some extent. That's another habit I need to get away from, I prefer to seek out the problem and address it rather than run or fort up and wait. Safer to fort up and wait.

De-cockers, safeties, etc. don't tell the bad guy where you are...........and it really doesn't matter if it temporarily blinds someone, if they are armed they will shoot at what they CAN see, which is the light. The light works like a lightning rod. If your that worried about seeing someone, put a damn night light in a socket. Best $2.69 you will ever spend. Then you can see the bad guy, and he doesn't get to shoot at the light that your holding. Besides, I don't sit around and wait to see who is what with what light. They should already be shot in my opinion. If it's not my wife, then I don't particularly care who it is. I make it a habit of knowing my home like the back of my hand, in light or darkness. Just like safeties, and decockers............don't depend on them. I have owned firearms with a safety. If you don't use it, why fear it. I also own firearms with decockers. Why would that affect anything? I have many different firearms for night stand guns. They all have one thing in common, even being different in their operation. I pick them up, I pull the trigger. Couldn't be any simpler. I don't want to be the lightning rod.

I picked up a XD-45 service model for a really good price and love it. It will replace my G30s after another 100 rounds or so.

I use a Sig 220 for my nightstand gun. I want that longer, heavier trigger pull if I have to grab something when I'm half asleep or having an adrenaline dump from a breaking window. 1911s and an 870 Remington also on duty for when I'm alert.
