Found out that my shoulder problem is due to arthritis & tendinitis, aggravated when I wrenched it while stumbling up the stadium stairs a month ago. Going to the orthopedic doc tomorrow to see what he can do. I can't even hold my little CT380 out straight - much less shoot it. I'd probably drop my full size SR45 like a Frenchman. Guess I may have to learn to shoot left-handed. Crap, am a terrible enough shot as it is.

See the doc and do what you are told. Try working out slowlyyyy and strengthening your shoulder on a regular basis. You are in Round Rock and I'm in Austin, there are plenty of places to go and no excuse not to.
Take care and get better.

Sorry to hear that. Bad as it is if you get really proficient shooting with your left hand you'll be unstoppable .

I feel your pain buddy. Both of my shoulders are circling the drain, at least the left one is the worst. Still mobile and able to use them, just getting more and more painful. Kind of a notch or something on the left side, kind of clicks, I know if I could just get in there with a rasp and some emery cloth I could take care of the clicking part.
They told me 20 years ago the time would come, guess its one of the fringe benefits of wheels for transportation.
Guess if one side goes I'll be going in circles a lot, kind of like rowing a boat with one oar. Systems normal........
Make em fix you, do the therapy, get better. Learn to shoot with your feet (I've seen it done) if you have to.

Get a shot of cortisone in the joint and you'll be good until it heals or a year, whichever comes first. I've had a few in each shoulder over 20 years. In the first the surgical techniques weren't there and now why bother.

I am 71 and five years ago I had both shoulders operated on. One in May and the second in November. For me, no big deal. I did, and still do, my PT, and within one year was back to handgun and even bought a bow which I keep relatively light at 56# and draw and letdown or shoot at least 60 times every other day.
Get the evaluation and follow the doctors advice. My surgeon told me most tears come from falls. Sudden shock to the cuff is not a good thing.
Good luck, but it is not the end of this story for you.

Hey Armybrat, sorry to hear about your shoulder, but like everyone else says, follow the Doc's advise and work your butt off doing rehab.
I shot right handed all my life but had to switch to the left (bad arthritis in the right hand) in the fall of 2011, and believe it or not I think I'm better left handed (after lots of dedicated work) than I was right. I thought I was done shooting and I couldn't believe it, so I worked for months dry firing until the gun didn't feel foreign in my left hand. It worked for me….don't give up!
I still fire one mag. right handed during 80% of my range trips…..we all need to maintain some skill with both hands.

Left handed? You didn't list that on the cyber bride resume? Actually technically your still right handed or at least that's the hand you identify as so we're probably ok. My real at home bride is a born left hander. They say 6 % of folks are left handed and I think I know them all.
No shame in it really. I try not to give them a hard time or anything. I mean Jocko's a lefty and the sheep still love him or act like they do anyhow.
I have to go lie down for a little bit, this is big news.

Actually I do most things right handed but arthritis (old athletic injury, and I didn't play football….) has FORCED me to become a little ambidextrous.
I may be able to shoot with either hand, but I don't go both ways!
Many Presidents are lefties…..I bet your home bride would make a much better one than those we have to choose from these days…….After all she helped raise a Marine!

The right side of your brain actually controls the left side of your body and vice versa... means only left handers are truly in their right minds. :p Sort of amphibious myself.. write and eat etc left handed but throw, golf and shoot etc right handed. I guess that makes me at least partly in my right mind. :D

I do everything right except bat or heaven forbid if I was to play golf I'd use a left hand stick thingy.
My youngest is just the opposite, he's primarily left but bats right and he has played golf despite my misgivings and devout efforts to dissuade him.
I have a ton of cops here that are cross dominant. Right handed but left eyed so they have to shoot rifle left handed.
At least they look normal on the outside.

Wow, that sounds mixed up!! Which in this world is par for the course!
All is good as long as your not mixed up about your manliness.
When I shot right handed I was cross eye dominate, so when I switched hands that part became easier.
In the AF they made everyone shoot right handed, they figured if you could qualify you were right handed. In my day that was typical in the military.
I was lucky enough to qualify expert (I think it was an accident), so I was fine shooting right handed. I was very disappointed not to have an opportunity to qualify on the M16, we shot 38 special instead. What a joke, the military hasn't used a revolver in combat in years.

Orthopedic doc says the rotator cuff is torn and it'll need outpatient surgery next week. He wants to do an MRI to get a detailed look, but has to consult with my cardiologist about the materials my three heart stents are made of. IIRC, they are stainless steel or titanium. If so, the MRI is probably a no-go. Crap - no shooting for a while.

Might be able to give a steroid shot and that may help. I get them every 3 months in both shoulders and it does help. Not a perfect solution but does work. Good luck!

I wouldn't mess with the shots as they are only a masking band-aid. It all depends on how extensive your surgery will be. My right shoulder (shooting arm) was a full cut and I was in a sling (which was nowhere near as bad as I thought), for five weeks. Wearing that sling I could do a hell of a lot more than I originally thought. I usually carried one I fashioned from a loop of paracord which was much lighter and easier to maneuver around. Sleeping in a lounge chair for a few weeks saved me.
My left shoulder they repaired with arthroscopic surgery and even though I used a sling for a couple of weeks, I cut the grass three days after surgery. MUCH shorter recovery time.
Now the bad news. You will not notice it but, full strength recovery can take up to a year regardless of the severity of the tear.
If you keep mentally in the game you can use this time to your advantage. I have used my body to the max and have replacement parts galore but I discovered it is mind over matter and your attitude will determine the success and eventual outcome. DO YOUR PT and do it for the rest of your life.
Enough , I am going to the archery range followed by a hundred rounds through a 686ssr.
Hang in there.

Had rotator cuff last October. Follow orders and hit the rehab as hard as you can within their guide lines. Extra secessions in a day seemed to help me. You may not get close to full strength for 9 mo to a year. Definitely worth it though.

Had the MRI for the shoulder this afternoon. Somebody shoulda told me how loud those dang machines are! I couldn't come close to going to sleep, even with the ear plugs.
At least all the heart stents didn't pop out like the Alien.

The MRI I had Monday shows a partial tendon tear in my shoulder. But it also showed a multiple myeloma, which is a form of bone cancer. Edited to add - blood & marrow cancer.
Double phooey.

Good news update:
Results of the whole body bone scan revealed fractures in my shoulder which most likely have caused some bleeding into the bone & marrow. Apparently that gave a false reading for the multiple myeloma cancer.
Made me so happy to hear that, I went out and bought a dozen chocolate-covered donuts.

Dude, you made my day, I'm sooooo happy for you. Get after them donuts and get a dozen more.

Thank goodness that it was a false alarm.
Being told that you have a very serious/fatal illness certainly shakes one to the core. Been there done that, don't recommend it, or wish it on my worst enemy.
Hope that you can get over the shock to your system- at least the outcome was a relief.

Almost two months ago when we were leaving a University of Texas football game, I stumbled up some stairs while grasping a hand rail awkwardly. It wrenched my shoulder. After going through the inevitable pain for a month, I went to my GP doctor first, who said it looked like a rotator cuff tear. Then the MRI which led to the whole bone scan.
