I haven't gone there yet, but it looks like I might have some business reasons to do so.
I imagine they are mainly useful for things like IDPA, but I can imagine folks using them on a nightstand type of pistol too.
So, what sights/mounts do folks use, and why on their pistol?
Thanks! I could use some schooling on this trend. Maybe I can name a new product or something after someone for the help.

I would seek information from Gabe Suarez. He's done more with dot sights on pistols than anyone else in the training community. Check his FB page and join his web forum.

I have a Burris II on a Kimber Gold Match 1911. My eyesight is starting to decline. If I wear my glasses, the target is clear, but the sights are fuzzy, if I don't wear my glasses the sights are sharp, but the target is fuzzy. With the red dot, I wear my glasses, and I can see the target and the dot well. I have friends that shoot local competitions and they are about my age, maybe older (55-60), they use red dots for the same reason. Ability to see both target and dot at same time.
I have zero expertise in the area. I chose the Burris because I could buy an adapter for the Kimber dovetail, and it is good enough quality to withstand the slide action.

I looked at it from a practical point of view, and figured the Burris and Vortex products were of reasonable quality and price so would probably be the most popular of the pistol sized products. I have heard some folks speaking of using them in IDPA or other competitions. I figured if they work there, that somebody must have started using them for home defense, but I haven't ever tried it so don't really know.
I think Kahr was showing holo sights mounted on their videos for the Gen 2s.
I have a couple of too large for pistol red dots on a carbine and a 10-22 and those are nice for me at about up to 50 yards. I'll do more research and have had some inquiries, so was wondering if it is a trend or if there are only a few out there who seek such things. Thanks for the replies!!!

I have 4 pistols with red dot sights. Oldest to newest, Nikon, 2 Aimpoints both TC Contenders. 44 mag and 30-30 that destroyed previous sights. Aimpoints are very tough and tolerate heavy recoil. newest one is a Vortex. Vortex is the smallest of the bunch. Stay away from the cheap Chinese made sights they aren't worth the trouble.
