View Full Version : Mystery barrel fouling, rust, or rough bore in new CM9?

I love my new CM9. After my first trip to the range, i noticed some barrel fouling, mostly in a groove, but some on a land, at about six o'clock halfway down the barrel. I guessed it was gilding metal fouling, but it looked more like lead; sort of rough. I had fired 120 rounds of jacketed ammo (WWB and Hornady) and the gun was not cleaned until two days later.

After the usual wet patch, bronze brush and more patches with Hoppes, the fouling remained. I flushed out the bore with brake cleaner, then used my favorite fouling remover, Wipe Out. After letting it sit for 30 minutes, the patch had just the tiniest hint of blue; almost nothing.

I thought maybe because my can of Wipe Out was old it had lost its effectiveness, so I ran a very wet patch of Sweet's 7.62 down the bore and added several more drops down the muzzle. I let that sit for a while and a clean patch came out... clean. Hmmm...

I then scrubbed the bore with some J.B. Bore Compound. Nothing unusual there, and the rough area remains in the bore. My next thought was that since I didn't clean it until two days following my range session, the rough area could be rust or corrosion from where normal shooting residue would have been left in the barrel at about the six o'clock area. But it seems like if that were the case, I would have noticed some orange or unusual color on a patch at some point, right? The gun did not get wet or exposed to damp conditions after the range session, and was carried in my N82 IWB holster afterwards.

I'm headed to the range today to do some more shooting with the CM9 and will be keeping an eye on the bore. I'll follow up on this post after I clean the pistol this afternoon.

Any thoughts?

Bob

It's nickel fouling from the plating on the barrel scrub as much as you like it will eventually shootout

I thought only the PM9 barrel was plated....

After a second range trip with the new CM9, followed by a very thorough cleaning and examination, it seems that what I thought was fouling was a slightly rough section of the bore.

After returning from the range, I did a usual cleaning regimen with Hoppes. Then, I filled the bore with Wipe Out foam and let it sit overnight. The next morning, the barrel was brushed repeatedly with Hoppes again, followed by a short Kroil soak, then a J.B. Bore Compound scrub and a cleaning with Hoppes again.

Near the muzzle, machining marks are present in the bore grooves. Down the bore a bit further, the marks are present on portions of the lands as well, giving the area a "rough" appearance and making me think there was some kind of heavy fouling present.

So, as Rosanna Rosannadanna used to say, "Never mind."

Yeah, I enjoyed Rosanna Rosannadanna, too, but in the "never mind" instances, I think it was Emily Litella (sp?).
Haven't watched SNL in many years, excepting the odd youtube link I've stumbled across and the "Pat" sketches. Dunno why, but those really crack me up.

You're absolutely correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjYoNL4g5Vg

Anyway, Ms. Radner was wonderful and I miss her!

I would suggest not over doing it like that. That is a pretty rough cleaning regiment. Heck one quarter of that is a rough cleaning regiment

pictures of marks bear the muzzle, if you please!
