View Full Version : Best modifications for PM9?

After stumbling across the C&S-modified PM9, I was considering doing some smithing/work of my own. I put 200 rounds through my PM9 (black slide/night sights) last weekend and it worked flawlessly (plus the previous owner had 300 problem free fires). I was about as accurate with the Kahr at 30ft as I was with my 4.5" SA XDm .45 and a 6".357 Colt Python!
I was thinking to try my hand at stopping the grip area or doing an 11° crown on the barrel (possibly manually as there seem to be good hobby/magazine articles on the topic).
This will be my carry weapon.... Anyone have any suggestions for work/changes they like?

I assume stopping the grip area should be stippling? I did my PM45 with my wood burner pencil and consider it a great success.
Easy to do and much nicer to grip.

In absence of grip stippling, I'd consider quite minimal adjustments. I find my bone stock PM9 to be remarkably accurate and easy to shoot. Bear in mind, this is not a range toy. It is a one or two magazine self defense weapon. I find it marginally painful to shoot more than 4-5 magazines through it in a range trip, yet that cheese grater grip really glues it into my hand for the shots that count. It is very, very accurate in my experience. I carry it every day to protect my life and those that I love.

The only thing I've done is to mod the magazine with a half a Pearce extension. The gun really needs nothing IMHO. I even like the factory grip stippling.

In my opinion, a "do it yourself" stippling on a PM9 might permantly ruin the good looks of a great looking gun. I installed the "rubberized" Talon grips on my PM9. I followed the instructions and they were easy to install. They look great and they eliminated the cheese grater feel. The PM9 is now very pleasant to hold and shoot. I can re-acquire the target quickly and I shoot more accurately with it. If I get tired of the talon grip I can peel it off and be back to factory original. You might give this some consideration.

^^^ some truth to that. I don't expect you would "ruin" the good looks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think what Bawanna and Greg have done looks real good. But you do probably diminish the resale value. I've seen bubba'd guns in used gun counters. It's rarely what I would do for my own gun. I just walk on by. Something to consider.

Anybody planning on making money on resale of guns is welcome to join me in the poor house.
You take a beating the minute it leave the box. I don't blame dealers really for low balling on used guns, they have to make a living too but sometimes I think it's a bit much.
Guess there's different levels of bubba'd guns too.

^^^ I guess the term "bubba'd" is probably too harsh. Sometimes the alterations are done very well like yours and Greg's. I also agree that, since you bought it and intend to use it, one should feel free to alter a gun to suit your taste/needs. I've typically bought used guns and made sparing alterations. So when it's time to sell, I hopefully come out healthy albeit rarely "whole". But resale is the secondary concern. I'd not hesitate to do anything that would make the gun more useful for me and take my hit come resale time with no regrets.
I think we've given OP some good ideas for his gun. That's admirable IMHO because Kahrs are pretty darn good just as they come.

I'm really not a good example either. I seldom sell, I always hate myself later. I'm an accumulator.
I've found that as my odometer reading gets higher and higher I'm more open to modifying and making things the way I want them.
I guess I'm less tolerant of things that are just ok.
There are of course guns I wouldn't touch in any way, old stuff, stuff that has sentimental value etc. But guns that can be replaced I sometimes have to ponder and scratch my head a bit to build up my nerve but then its time to get to work.
I seldom do anything major.
Probably bobtailing some of my 1911's is the most adventuresome task I've done.
I don't think the bubba term is really too harsh, all things being equal, one project can be spot on and the same project another time might get the title bubba.

Thanks, I am working on the wife's grip and mine and finding that it alleviates much of the discomfort!
