View Full Version : Installing Wolffe recoil springs in PM40 Guide rod.

Purchased a used PM40 late in December and took to the range. I am not recoil sensitive being used to firing full power loads in my Glock 10mm and .40 caliber pistols but the Recoil was a bit more than I expected. I have ordered a new recoil assembly from Kahr but want to change the recoil springs on my old guide rod with the 20.5 Wolffe Springs. What is the best way to remove the end nut on the old rod. Recommendations would be appreciated.

Most people just replace the outer spring and don't bother with the inner one.
I guess I'd be reluctant to remove that nut so it doesn't come off later. If you do take it off, Loctite the heck out of it when you put it back on.
I've never taken one off so I'm no help.
Wynn has lost a few and made his own replacements. He'll probably have some good help.

HI Texas48, Bawanna. Yes Bawanna I'm still around. How's the snow up by you ?
The wife has a PM9 that the slide and the recoil spring plug have been Cerakoted. So when I replaced the inner spring for her she needed to keep the matching end nut. So I heated the end nut with a heat gun and it came right off in a soft jawed vise. I replaced the inner spring from another spring assembly, and red lock tighted the end nut in place. It's still in place after hundreds of fired rounds.
My question is where do you buy just the inner recoil spring

Well done, I kind of figured if anyone could do it you'd be the guy.
I think the trick is plenty of Loctite when you reinstall the nut.
Thanks for stopping by, show yourself a bit more often if it ain't too much trouble.
Our snow is pretty much gone, but it's damn cold and a couple days ago the roads were all just sheet ice, went down my hill like the Jamaican bobsled team I did, no way I could get back up but it warmed a bit and they hit it with sand real good so I got home that night ok.
My son had a white knuckle drive nearly all the way to 29 Palms. Wanted to take his car back and we got snow New Years Eve. He had to leave New Years morning. We debated just shipping his car down and flying back. I think he kind of wishes he'd done that too but he made it. Had to buy chains which were required. Just glad he made it.
Me, I'll just stay home by the wood stove if it's too white outside.

Thanks for the response. Getting a new recoil spring for the PM 40. Its on older gun still has a pre 2006 mag plastic mag release don't know round round but really slammed my writs when fired. Has a set of wolff springs and want to replace the ones in the old guide rod. Got plenty of Red lock tite so I give the gun a chance with the new springs. Was still accurate and could not pass up for $300.00 out the door. Planned on heavy recoil but this was flat manageable thus the new springs.

Thanks for the input jg rider! I've always liked the stuff you post, so please do as Bawanna asks and "show yourself a bit more often if it ain't too much trouble." :)
BTW, I've not see anyplace that sells just the inner spring. The Wolff spring set may be the only source.

Sometimes lurking just don't cut it. But lurking is better than nothing I reckon.
Getting any better down in your neck of the woods. Got a hell of a snow storm down your way. Guess Seattle sent down fleet or plows and trucks to help with cleanup. Looked like a huge mess on the news.
Probably didn't effect you too bad I hope as your out a bit away from the hustle and bustle. I hope.

Snows did effect us. We're about 25 miles west of Portland, south of Hillsboro, north of Newberg. Have to drive to about 1600 ft level and then drive down to 1200 ft. to our house on a private rd. So no road clearing except by me and some other neighbors with tractors and scaper blades. Snows are about 8"
Here's what it usually looks like when then the snows come. We love it. This was last year.
Seriously though I'v been rekindling my interest in my Marlin 1894 lever actions, .38 / .357 & .44. IIRC, I may have posted pics of them with with their Williams reciver sights and Marble f.o. front sights.
Out of boredom I decided to mount red dots on them just for kicks. Found a site locally that's selling 5 moa dots that are holding up to .44 recoil. Red dots cost only about $45.00
They're a quick on and off install We'll see if the grand kids like them.
Pics to come
I also have a Marlin .22 39A that is a tack driver, at least to me since I'm not a bench rest shooter.
Here's a 5/8" group at 75 yds. into a 6" steel plate using an older Weaver K9 4x scope.
gb6491, how have you been. I thought you're in the warm SW so you may be getting a chill in your bones. I know when my inlaws come up from AZ. or NV. I have to turn the heat on in the spring.
Enough of this off topic before I get kicked off by the moderator.

No worries JG, I know a guy that knows a mod and Pedro offers you his protection.
If your West of Portland you got dumped on for sure.
My son sure got a bad deal driving his car back to 29 Palms. It was snow and chains on and off all the way into California.
Should have just had the car trucked down in hindsight but he made it and all is good and saved me 500 bucks.

LOL Where are the the gloves ? Aren't you afraid of frostbite ? :D I happy that all is well for you. The same with us, but cabin fever is starting creep in. We were gonna go to the movies last. But my son called to tell us is was still llike an ice skating rink dow in the flat lands, plus we'd still have to navigate down the mountain around several switchbacks.
Are you anywhere near Deere Park or Suprise.
We're probably gonna come down next summer. And I want to try to find a Steel Plate match to shoot while there.
I wanted to do the same when we go back to N.Y. God ! we are lucky to be able to travel from state to state in the mid and west of this country. But that's another story.

Yup them leaves is definitely gone and me thinks they ain't coming back.
Just looking at those pictures makes me want to come down and walk around a long long ways.
I'm a trees and mountains and streams kind of guy but that looks mighty appealing to me, even on a rainy day, maybe even especially on a rainy day.
Hope things clear up for you JG. Our roads are all clear and no longer icy like they were. Still cold but a bit warmer than it's been for quite a spell. Suns even out today.

Come on down! A good friend and his wife whom live in Idaho spend their winters here. He and I hit the desert a lot and I'm sure we would all get along famously (he's a 1911 guy :) ).

I'm not sure what you're asking in the first part pard, but that photo is taken from the northern edge of the Muggins Mountain Wilderness.
The mountain on the left is Muggins Peak, on the right is Long Mountain.

I was joking about that grey horizontal strip along the base of those mountains. I guess it's really a fog line ?

LOL, I'm slow, but I see what you mean now. Hard to say what that was...could've been fog or haze. There's a river bottom, a big canal, fields, and open desert over by those mountains (the Gila Mountains). The river (Gila) and the fields have fog over them quite often>

Used some heat and was able to remove the nut. Replaced springs with Wollf 20.5 lb spring set for the PM40. I did this after getting a new recoil assembly from Kahr. The sent me the new 15 coil spring , sent it back got a new 13 coil assembly. Trying to install this new assembly the slide would not lock back. After several attempts trying to install, thinking it was me, I called Kahr and tech told me to fire the gun and the springs would set. I have never encountered this with any other pistol I have owned. Did think that this was the way to go. Is it a common thing that a slide not lacking back after installing a new spring assembly?

As a follow up. I bought a #2 recoil assembly from Kahr and when I installed it I couldn't lock back the slide. I tried a couple more times thinking I was doing something wrong. Same results and it was a 13 coil spring. Tech at Kahr told me to just fire the gun and springs would set themselves. I have never experienced this with any pistol I have owned. Has anyone had the same experiences with a new recoil assembly? Is this normal?
Instead I installed the 20.5 recoil springs from Wolfe today and was not hard with a soft jawed vice and some heat. Reinstalled the nut using green lock tite. Big difference with the new springs racking slide. Have to get to the range to test it out. Thanks for all the responses and have enjoyed all the pictures. No snow here in San Antonio. Been in the 70's the last 3 weeks.

IMHO, if you can manually pull the slide back engage the slide stop into the notch. You should be ok. On our two PM9's we can pull the slides back about 1/16" to 1/8" past the slide stop. After that the spring will take a set.
If you don't have that amount of free travel then there's a good chance that the spring coils are stacking up.
That's MHO
What's green lock tite is it stronger then the red stuff ?

Thanks jg rider you confirmed my suspicion. The tech was giving me bad info. Glad went with the 20.5 springs. Green loctite takes heat to get off but red is the strongest. I reinstalled the Nut with Red loctite after realizing that red loctite is the strongest of the 4 types. My PM40 is a 2006 and used a type 1 guide rod and because of the 1/2 inch end of the new type #2 that rides in the barrel grove may be too big and moves out of the grove when racking is causing the coil to bind. The new spring allows me to rack the slide normally and will lock back and they are considerably stronger than were in the gun when I bought it a month ago. I am sure they will tame the recoil.

The fronts are Hi-Viz f.o. and the rears are all black Novak style. Both were sold by Kahr. The Hi-viz are encased in a protective tube. The fronts are something I would recommend a smith or Kahr do for you. They are a almost a pressed fit in most cases. I did my own on our 4 Kahrs and it wasn't fun. I think Kahr has a special sight pusher.

Did you use a pusher on the fronts? Dawson has a special tool to install fronts. I have a pusher for tears. What problems did you have. Dovetail fronts are difficult to get most pushers to remove and install. Thanks
