View Full Version : Scared myself this weekend

Saturday I got dressed and ready like I usually do, and strapped on my CW40 in my IWB holster. I always check that there is a round chambered and that the magazine is full, even though nothing changes from the time I take it off the previous night until I put it back on in the morning. Just a habit. Later Saturday morning, my wife and I took an hour and a half drive, went out to eat for lunch, and went shopping at several stores that we have not previously frequented. Got back home, and had to take care of some business in the toidy. Took the gun out of the holster to put it on the sink, and it felt a little weird. No magazine! What the......! Instant panic. I didn't remember feeling it drop out, and it has NEVER released without me pushing the mag release. I'd suspect my Glock 22 might as I have an extended release on it, but the Kahr needs a deliberate push to drop the mag. Did it fall out in the truck? When we got home, we went somewhere with my wife's car, did it fall out there? At a store? In a parking lot? All these scenarios go thru my mind.
I take care of business, and think to myself "self, before you go into a panic, why don't you go check in the bedroom and see if it's there". Lo and behold, that's where it was. I must have checked the gun, holstered it, put the 6-round mag in the nook where I keep the gun at night and put the 7-round one in my back pocket like usual.
Yeah, I let out a big sigh of relief.
I feel compelled to share my error. Starting yesterday, I consciously re-seat the magazine. I thought I was doing that anyway, but I messed up once! I may have only had a one-shooter, but I did have a back up magazine!

At least you had the back up magazine. Much better than a one shooter.
It seems as time goes by it's easier and easier for me to get sidetracked from my usual routine. I'm a devout creature of habit. I know where my stuff is at all times. BUT. Once in awhile you set something down (just for a minute) and bam, it's forgotten.
I hate it. Makes me want to reserve a room at the home.

You guys aren't the only one going through it. I think it's called old age. Irritating as #$%^&.
Men especially are compromised when it comes to "multi-tasking". I would bet some type of mental distraction happened the morning of. +++ on the ageing process.
As an example, this is my second reply to this post. The first time I forgot to punch the "post quick reply" button.

Have not properly seated my Ruger LC9s Pro mag.
Reached into my pocket and realize the mag was in the gun.
But not properly seated
Now I give them a good smack when I put them in :)

I have gotten in to the habit of checking the magazine EVERY time I touch the firearm. I ALWAYS know that there is one in the chamber. It helps with the memory thing.

Now see, if you lived in California you would have been screwed, we have to have a magazine in the pistol for the trigger to work.

That's not as bad as leaving the house and finding out later that your holster is empty... once... maybe twice. I did have the spare mag and my carry knife.
CRS. I've added turmeric and other other supplements and vitamins to my diet to try to help with my memory. :p

Used to train in Martial Arts with Hillsborough County Sheriff's. One guy was assigned to SWAT.
He taught me the press check.
So I instinctively drop the mag and make sure it's loaded.
Then reinsert the mag and perform a press check
before holstering the gun and heading out the door.
It's good to train with LEOs.

Well at least you could have thrown it the BG when you discovered it wasn't loaded....

I came home once and was taking my j frame out of my pocket when I heard a beeping sound and went looking to see where it was coming from...I went in the wife's home office and it was the battery backup to our internet service so I laid the j frame down on the printer to reset the battery....I got it to stop and totally forgot about the pistol until the next morning and when it wasn't on the night stand I totally freaked.....I went into a panic trying to remember everywhere I had been like Walmart and the library....I even called Walmart and asked if they had found a pistol in the auto section which is right next to the toy department.... Nope so I went through 3 days of no sleep and being sick to my stomach thinking of the worst when the damn battery started beeping again and that's when I saw the pistol laying right where I left it.....WOW what a relief!!!?...This getting old stuff sucks big time!!!!

I was taking tumeric for months, and 2 days ago I realized that I had forgotten to take it since the Christmas Holidays. Evidently I am not the best spokesperson for its effectiveness.

I do the same….plus when I put a magazine into the weapon I use the heel of my hand on the front edge on the mag as I drive it in. It helps the mag catch where it's suppose to. I became obsessive about it when I was carrying a sig. and discovered I didn't properly seat the mag. I'm glad I learned my lesson at a time when there were NO consequences!!

I was out of the country for 6 months, and now that I'm back I[m having to learn my pistol habits all over again. I turned 70 while I was gone, and I'm finding it's not as easy to remember things as it used to be.

Well RevRay I sense a necessary parable here. Where the heck did you go for 6 months anyhow?
Remembering stuff is highly overrated too. You'll figure it out eventually. I got things I've been trying to remember for a while now, something should pop up just about anytime now.
Funny some things I can remember real good and others not so much.

I had heard something about that actually. But I was in England for the Brexit vote and to see the new prime minister installed.

Yup, that's the last enhancement.
Press check plus driving the mag with the heal of my hand is now part of the drill.

It does happen. I guess key here is to double check and make sure.
