My blue Smith & Wesson 586 came with the large target grips that didn't fit my small hands at all so I wanted to find a nice set of pretty wood finger groove grips for it....Started out with a set from Hogue but they didn't fit too well and were still pretty big for my hands so I sent them back....Next I ordered a set of Magna grips from Midway and while they didn't have finger grooves they fit but whoever packed them must have been blind because one side was dark walnut and the other side was almost a light blond color so I sent those back...

Next thought was to find some factory finger groove grips at a gun show which I did but they were pretty beat up and the guy wanted a hundred bucks for them so I just about gave up and put the black rubber Hogue grips back on there but this gun being blue was crying out for some nice walnut grips so I found an ad in a gun magazine for Altamont grips www.altamontco.com and found just what I was looking for....I ordered some that looked nice and they were only $42.00 plus shipping so I figured that if I didn't like them I wasn't out very much but to my surprise they are perfect and fit my hand just right and are a beautiful color and grain that really makes the 586 look like a classic....

They may not be up to the quality of the Colonels but for the money I am more than happy with them....If you are looking for some nice wood grips for either a semi auto or wheel gun go online and take a look at what they have, I think they may have something you will like!

I'm on board the Altamont train with you and Bawanna as I really like their "boot" grips :)

That's a good eye you have there, the Smith's hammer has been modified. I did the work on it by taking a little bit off at a time, checking frequently by drawing the gun from a pants or jacket pocket, until I had a profile that worked for me. It is much more snag resistant than the shape would suggest plus I can easily easy cover it with my thumb for further insurance against it snagging. There is enough checkering left that I have good purchase for cocking/de-cocking in single action. There are a couple of not so good photos of the hammer from the rear about half way down this page:

Really nice "dehorned" hammer work on that gun, in fact I like everything you did to that sidearm. Looks and function, what a concept.

I share your feelings about the Big Dot. Nice in some situations but overall... It think it takes a lot of guts to freehand drill with a dremel. Drill now, coffee later?

Those little guns can shoot if you work at it. Here is mine DA on a good day at 30' BEFORE coffee.
