What is the need for the Mag base to have a finger rest and extend so far below the mag well? Can another Kahr base be used on the 8 round mags that is not so "out there"?

I can't think of a reason why the flat base won't work but it will still extend a bit below the grip.
Look here under the MK9 for magazine parts ...

I was looking at mag bases made by 10-8 yesterday for the S&W MP line. They are made from alloy and would be a good addition for the T and TP line.
This is the info on the 10-8 bases for the M&P line:

The M&P factory base pad was one of the areas where we felt some improvements could be made. Due to their plastic construction, some users have experienced pad cracking and breakage. Our magazine base pads are CNC machined from tough 6061 aluminum for maximum durability. The bottom of the pad features 8 dimples for marking your magazines.
The long front extension, or toe, of the base pad has given some users problems where the toe of a second magazine is caught when drawing another magazine. This results in the user getting one magazine, and the ground getting the other one.
The length of the factory M&P base pad tends to position the user's hand farther away from the tube, which does not promote a good index for consistent reloading.
The front and sides of the pad are scalloped for positive grip during tactical reloads and to permit stripping of stuck mags.
