View Full Version : K9 wood grips kind of a let down

I do not mean they are a let down as far as looks. I got the checkered ones for my K9, and they look great.
The fit is not great at all. There was a gap at the bottom of the grip. I resolved this when I figured out I had to tighten the screws in a particular order----bottom screws then top. Still, the grips don't fit perfectly at the top of the grip. I did have to tighten the screws more than expected to get everything to seat.
They do look good, but it's a shame there isn't competition in the K9 wood grip market. I guess Wicked Grips used to make some, but they no longer do. The K9 is a very small market.
The wood grips do eliminate some of the issue with the mag not fitting flush, though.

There is if you go the custom route. Here's the premier craftsman of custom wood grips for Kahr pistols: http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!gallery-2/photostackergallery1=2
Beyond wood, there's https://lakelinellc.com/product-category/kahr-pistol-accessories/pistol-grips/

Those links didn't work for me. I googled bawanna45, and found his website though.
Sweet baby Jesus, his artistry makes the Kahr/Hogue grips look like dog poop. I'd love to have a set of grips for my MK9 the color of those NRA Law Enforcement ones he did. Excuse me while I push my eyeballs back in their sockets....

Thanks for the kind words guys. Premier Craftsman don't roll off my tongue to easy but has a nice sound.
Ed, post a picture of them grips that don't fit. For now maybe I can make them fit and dress them up a bit if needed.
Is the MK a newer model or older. I think the older is a GA prefix. I have a model of that I borrow, I don't have the newer style which is different.
I keep saying I won't make Kahr grips anymore, time and difficulty plus the different series that I have yet to figure out.
I borrowed the little MK again 2 months ago and have yet found time to whittle some grips for folks here. It's the older series.
Come fall maybe I'll have time to make some more K's.
Kind of a trip down memory lane. I haven't looked at my own website in ages. Melissa did a pretty fine job setting it up for me. It's been so long, I'm not sure I remember how to go in and add pictures or change stuff.
Lot of grips on there I'd forgotten about, some fond memories and a few recalled headaches too.

I will keep watching this forum for your "Kahr K9 grips are being made announcement.
Thanks Bawanna. My Hogue grips for my MK9 fit fine. It's a GC serial number series.
I'm just not crazy about the color of them. I prefer a darker color wood - something like cocobolo, or a dark cherry trips my trigger. A bit of a reddish tint is most appealing to me.
On one of my visits to the mothership, the guys at Kahr actually got their whole wood grip inventory out for me to look over. Dozens of grips! I found one pair of grips that really looked awesome, but they were for a K, not an MK. You can pretty much imagine what they said - "Just buy a K!"
If you ever feel the urge to make a set of grips for a newer MK, let me know and I'll send you the nylon grips if it'll help. You can pencil me in for a set of Bawanna custom grips for sure!

Well boys I finished up one set and made a new set of MK grips today. I thought I was really doing something good and then I hunt up this thread and find it was a K and a newer model MK grips folks wanted.
Guess I didn't make anybodies day after all.
These are both GA serial MK's. Debating on checkering or leaving with a few more coats of oil. I probably won't checker the Maple as checkering just destroys the grain pattern and they are just blah.

Next time I'll go K. But mine is early again. I don't have a newer model of MK or K. Oh well, I tried.

Always had trouble with the stability of maple, seems it wants to warp. Beautiful grips, Bawanna!

Wow. Nice work, sir.
They really are good looking!
I'm wondering if those wouldn't fit a new MK if you used a washer or spacer under the grip to take up the space where the new frame is cut out.
There doesn't appear to be any difference anywhere else, and regular length 1911 screws should be long enough to make it to the inside of the frame. Hmmmm.....
I also have a new pair of checkered wood grips purchased thru kahr's web site and yup, same thing, a 1mm gap between the two grips at the base. I've tried everything I could think of short of putting a sanding block to the grips. I'll go back & put them back on & try tightening the bottom screws first. I don't remember trying to tighten them in any certain order but I'll go give it a shot.
