View Full Version : Help - Problems with Guide Rod and Metal Rail Guide?
Hey everyone,
I cleaned my CW9 today to remove all the dirt from the first range session I had yesterday. There were two things I found that I was unsure about. I was hoping some of you could tell me if the issues were normal, and if not, how to fix them. I just wasn’t sure if I need to call Kahr about the issues.
Issue 1: Metal guide on rear of frame flexes. Referencing picture one, I am able to flex the metal guide about 1/32”, until it is flush with the plastic guide. If I do not touch the metal, it sticks up the 1/32”.
Issue 2: The metal Recoil Spring Guide Rod took extreme wear during the initial 200 rounds. What concerns me is that parts of the rod have significant amounts of finish/metal removed. Referencing the .293” section in picture two, it looks like metal was actually removed. If I run my fingernail down the rod, it almost catches at this point (there is a real step-up).
Are these issues normal? If not, what should I do? Should I call Kahr? I know there is a “Mating” period but these issues just seem like they shouldn’t be?
As always, thank you all for your help!

My P45 guide rod looks much more worn than that, of course I have zero clue as to a round count for it. There is a stainless guide rod that Kahr, and Steve Bedaire (spelling?) sell. As for the first part I think that too is normal. I sit here at work and irregardless have no caliper to check that with. BTW my carry rod today is my 1911...

MJR...
The part you're referring to in pic 1 is not the rear guide rail, it is the ejector and it is quite normal for that to move like that. Also, the guide rod is also behaving normal, nothing to worry about. It will have no affect on performance.

Ditto. No problems there. Some people fret about the guide rod not being "pretty", but it does its job fine. Just keep it lubed... lightly greased.

MJR. Not sure that they all don't show what yours is showing. One has to realize that when the gun goes boom, the slide starts to retract straight backwards and the barrel is now caming downward and this along with the guide rods puts an awkward angle on the entire recoil system, meaning the springs. They are just rubbing harderi n those areas and IMO they will not hurt a thing. Why does the stainless rods seemt o do better??? IMO because one can't actually see the wear that is actually going on. Heh, buy a half dozen rods from kahr and replace it when you replace recoill springs.
Also if the gun is running great, then IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT...
that peace in the photo your referring to is the ejector. It will move a tad, that is OK...

Also read the Kahr-Tech forum for guidance on prepping your Kahr and the lube chart. Both really helped me get started.

Nice thread and hopefully another happy and reassured Kahr owner. GOOFA, nice pics, your MK9 looks sweet.
Hey Everyone,
I have been out of the loop for about two weeks while traveling for work and just wanted to thank everyone for the info. Your knowledge is definitely appreciated.
Thank you,
MJR

I checked the CW9 and I noticed that the front of the guide rod hole has a very sharp edge.
I could pull the old rod across the edge and feel the drag.
I used a cratex tip on my dremel at low speed to polish the inside of the hole and one with a taper to polish off the sharp edge.
You would have to look close to see the difference but you can sure feel the difference.
I then installed the Bedair guide rod. THe Bedair rod is a little longer that the original and it is tapered at the front. The taper protrudes to the front of the hole and I think that it looks better.

Range report. I took the cw9 to the range and fired several mags. I can not see any wear on the new guide rod. I believe that the sharp edges in the frame were the reason for the wear on the original.
Also, I could not see any difference in accuracy. I was shooting a spinning steel target at 25 yds from a rest and I hit it more than I missed it. The misses were my fault.

As requested
Notice: Just enough to take off the edge.

Never ever ever willingly accept the blame for misses or poor accuracy in general. Always blame it on the gun, the moon, the stars, too much coffee, a bent barrel, I'm sure you can think of something.
I'm a terrific marksman, never miss, just all my guns are POS and don't hit for beans.
Work on that.

Yep, it's usually a sudden disruption in the conflux of the earth’s gravitational fields (most likely caused by a randomly passing celestial body) that induces an anomaly into the gyroscopic stability of the projectile causing it to be errant from it’s intended path to the target that accounts for any misses I might have.:)

Greg
BTW, nice work on that slide and guide rod LouisianaJoe.

Now this is what I'm talking about. This is exactly what happens to me I just didn't know enough of the big words to explain it. Exactly what you said GB. This could be the explanation for Jocko's marksmenship too. I think theres an abundance of them celestial bodies centralized around Indiana.
An balancing on a two wheeled motorized contraption more often than not, his gyros are no doubt especially vulnerable to attack stability wise.
LouisiannaJoe, I love that hat! It totally rocks.

oh hell Bawanna I knew all about that celestial stuff. No doubt that is what is and has been causing my piss poor shooting for the past 50 years to. But lately the stars and moon has started to move around alot more differelty than 50 years ago and my kahrs are shooting much more irratic and I certainly cannot take the blame for that. It has never been me, never . These guns are pos GUNS, THEY never shoot where I aim. sent my kahr's back 15 times and the factory saysnothig wrong and has advised me numerous times to sell the guns and get a good one. I am going to give my PM9 another 30,000 rounds down range and if my groups dn't tighten up for 12" at 7 yards to at least 10" at 7 yards then I will peddle them. I have seen tmes when the moon and the stars line up perfectly and I shoot one hole, one shot groups to. So I know it is not me..

I will try to be less truthful in the future about my shooting ability. There are some excellent suggestions here to use as excuses.
The picture with the hat was taken a couple of years ago at a St Patrick's day parade. I had my arms around some pretty young ladies who would not normally give me the time of day if they were sober.

No guys you all have it all wrong. I has nothing to do with any of the cellestial crap or gravitational rotation bunk....ITS GLOBAL WARMING!!!! if you don't beleive me just ask Al Gore or Barrack Obama both are Nobel Peace Prize winners don't you know...????????
Niether one could find their arse with both hands and a search warrant! That is for sure and for certain.

If nobody has placed dibbs I'll take the angel on the right!!! The hat still rocks, the circumstances just make it more so. You look to be leaning just a bit to port or is that starboard yourself. More fuel in the hand. Fun times, nice company. Angels rock!
DKD, you could be right on that global warming thing. Even if your wrong its one more thing we can blame on that pair of Nobel Prize winning losers.

It figures you'd take the lady in the red shirt, Bawanna! I guess better off with the one far right than far left. To each his own. :D

oh the one on the right is dynamite, now If I could put the tongue from the lady on the left into the mouth of the lady on the right. then all would be well for ol jocko.
actually none of the 3 would I kick outta bed...

Look a little farther right there Jocko. I didn't notice her before either was looking for the red shirt. I don't think she qualifies as Angel status but this will teach me to look more closely in the future.

I don't know about St Patricks Day, looks like Mardi Gras to me. I'll stick with the angel in the group, leave that far right one to where ever she came from. If she's your wife I'll be sure to start back peddling rapidly.......

The girl next to me is my niece. The others are friends of hers. The parade was in Metairie, LA and they throw beads there that were gathered at Mardi Gras Parades. Some of the beads are specific to St Patrick's day. My wife is practicing what she is going to tell me about how childish I am.

Dang I knew I was safe on the red shirt lady not being your wife, figured she'd be thumping ya hanging out with the angels. Didn't take into account any of the angels might be relations. I'm thinking angel on left with tongue is other half of dude hunkered down in middle, niece to your left, angel in group left with over abundance of cute is my angel?
Hmm is this all safe, probably so. Still a cool hat.

Ya know, I think we all must be around the same age cause everytime a thread gets started we all seem to get WAY off track!!!:D:D:D The one on the right looks 18 anyway!!! What WAS this thread about anyway???? AHHHH who cares!:):)

I believe that she was younger than that when the picture was taken. She is probably legal now but would still call all of us "Sir".
