I'm a fan of Lakeline LLC's follower. It's made of aluminum and that should prevent the follower skirt from breaking off.

However, the likely cause of the OEM follower failure was the barrel's feed ramp striking it. Unless that is corrected, it will still hit the Lakeline follower which result in some damage to the follower: http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?29039-How-does-this-work
Experience has shown that the Lakeline follower will continue to function in this condition, though I wold suggest a little clean up of any burrs that might occur.

I recent bought a used P40 Covert that had a broken follower in the magazine that came with it. When I got it home I verified that the barrel's ramp would indeed make contact with the follower (especially the bottom left of the feed ramp). I removed material from that area of the feed ramp until I was satisfied it would no longer hit the follower. I then just blended that area with the rest of the feed ramp. I've put about 150 rounds through the P40 since then and my followers are intact, the pistol cycled without issue, and I can pretty much ride the slide all the way home when chambering a round.

Kahr has been known to rework the feed ramp on pistols sent back to them for breaking followers.
