View Full Version : recoil spring assembly - retainer nut missing
Background:
I was cleaning my cm45 after shooting today and when I removed the recoil spring assembly the inner spring and rod came out of the outer sleeve. There are threads on the end of the inner rod but there is nothing to screw it into. I'm guessing the nut on the end of the rod that retained everything together fell off while I was shooting. The Kahr parts catalog says you can order the entire assembly but not that nut.
My question:
Is that nut even necessary?
The gun shot fine the whole time I was shooting.
I was surprised when the assembly came apart but it was not a big deal to reassemble the gun.

The nut is supposed to be loctited on, my PM45 lost one when it was new. I called Kahr and got a warranty replacement of the whole assembly, took about a 10 days for the replacement to arrive.
Wyntrout made his own replacement, see this posting:

You can make your own nut: http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?3934-Make-your-own-guide-rod-nut-for-the-recoil-spring-assembly

Thanks guys. Kahr usually will send you a replacement assembly free. They aren't supposed to come apart.
So , just running it without the nut is NOT ok?

It's in-elegant and there's a larger opening for trash and lint to collect, and it's easier to lose the parts. I would just call customer service and see if they would replace it.
OK I'll do that - thank's everybody.
I left a message to the Tech Support/Warranty department.
This morning they called me wanting to know the address where they should ship a new recoil spring assembly.
No - other - questions
That is unbelievably great customer service!

Great news for you! I'm on my third assembly for my cm45. Once for the nut flying away and once for the spring working its way up through the metal sleeve part. Both incidents caused a stoppage. They're certainly aware of problems with this assembly. With that said, they've always taken care of any problem that I have had including one with a used K9. My only complaint is that I've had the problems.
Now that you mention the spring working through the metal sleeve and stoppage , I remember I did have a stovepipe which was the first malfunction of any kind on this gun.
Also I noticed that taking the outer spring off the sleeve and putting it back on required more effort versus just sliding on and off, so probably the sleeve got deformed.
I got the new assembly in the mail today. The spring is a lot stronger than the original. It was hard to install. I assume it will weaken a little after I shoot it.
