For me it was about this time period - 1947 - in front of our Infantry Post quarters at Fort Sam Houston (San Antonio) Texas. Am the unruly one on the left with the poor trigger & safety discipline. Evidently I hadn't mastered the art of the lariat yet either.
How about you folks?

As a kid, in the 60's, I always had a play gun to play Army. As an adult it wasn't until 1978 when I got my first shotgun to duck hunt, hooked every since.

Nice picture.
For me it was at 5 or 6 years old when I got my first B.B. gun. I would shoot that in the back yard all week then we’d go shoot .22’s with dad at the river on weekends. After I got older and started working, then a family, so there was not time or place to shoot. I always had a .22 rifle, a .357 revolver, and a colt .380 auto at home but never got to shoot them. Then about the time the Ruger LCP came out I bought one for pocket carry and that was the beginning of the resurgence. I’ve owned and traded more firearms since then than I can even count, and shot tens of thousands of rounds at the range.
Life is good!

After several years with BB guns, I bought a single shot Remington 22 at 11 years old. I carried that gun everywhere back then. [days and perceptions were different in the 50's] My interest in handguns started when I joined the Navy pistol team shooting a modified 1911.

Aside from toys, it was probably when my dad brought home two Ithaca single shot .22 saddle carbines and built a sort of range in our basement. My brothers and I had many fun hours shooting mainly CB caps but an occasional "real" .22 too. Then a few years later, in 1968, he took me to our little local gun shop to get my first pistol, a beautiful Colt Woodsman MT. I was almost 15 years old. Cost me all of my savings from my job as a dishwasher in a local restaurant. Lots of memories there in that basement. Those were the days.

Started shooting .22's in the basement at the angst of my mother in 1963. Had an old Remington bolt and an old Savage bolt. Father was a part time gunsmith. Him and a buddy used to make big game rifles from scratch for the well to do hunters. Also did repair and bluing work, and hand checkering. We never had less than a couple hundred rifles in the basement. The old man seemed to like mausers, or at least did a lot of work on them. I purchased my first handgun at 18. Astra .357 snub. Shot it a few times and sold it back for the same price. Scary. Then went out and got a stainless model 19 with a 4" barrel and never looked back.

I got my first toy gun at 4, I began to shoot the neighbors 22 at 9.
I didn't shoot a real gun until 13, it was my Dad's .30-6.

My most valuable firearm. My dads 1938 Red Ryder BB Gun. Wish he was still around so I could ask him about those notches in the stock.
Guns were always a part of our family growing up. Dad was a sniper in WWII - he never talked much until his last years about his experiences, but he was a terrific shot. Seemed like he never missed.
Christmas of 1966, there was a Daisy Red Ryder under the tree for me. I was 6 years old. Dad taught me how to shoot - I can still hear his voice today when I shoot.
When I turned 12, Dad signed me up for a hunter safety course. Several of his buddies had sons of the same age, and the idea was we'd all take the course together, and go hunting together. Deer camp was a right of passage here in PA and 12 was the minimum age to get a hunting license.
My first rifle was a Marlin 336C 30-30 lever action, with a Weaver 4X scope. My first shotgun was an H&R Topper single shot 12 ga.
My first pistol was an H&R 32 snubby revolver. Hated that thing, and as soon as I saved up enough, I traded it in on a stainless Colt Python with a 6" barrel.
Sadly, I don't own any of these guns any more.

Those with you your brothers? They must be left handed, guns on the wrong side.

The first time I shot a gun I was 9. Took hunter safety at 10. All downhill since then. :o .22 LR, .30-06, .58, .45, you name it. Hunted with a 16 gauge for a number of years until I graduated to a 12 gauge. I've been hooked for over 55 years.

I got sent home from kindergarten for wearing my proudest possession: A pair of Roy Rogers 6-shooters on a gun belt. After that it was a BB pistol, Benjamin pellet rifle (which I still shoot), 20ga bolt action I bought with my own money at about age 11 (which I still shoot), Remington .22 rifle at about age 20. I didn't get my first handgun (a Taurus .357 revolver) until I was about 50. That started a whole new phase in my life!

I got a Daisy BB gun Christmas of my 9th year. Been shooting every since. My grandpa had a single shot, bolt action Remington 22 from the 1930's, had to manual cock the bolt. When me and my next door cousin (next door meant 3/8 mile) turned 10 or 11, don't quite remember, he used to take us down by the cow pond and let us shoot at turtles with the .22, man what a blast. Once you shot, they would all dive in the water and you would have to wait a few minutes for them to re-surface. A single shot was all we needed.
I do not know what became of that Remington, but I wish I had it in my collection.

You remember what model. I've been on the 22 curio and relic 22 bolt rifle hunt for awhile now. Always checking the auctions.
Mostly been getting old Mossbergs but a few others.
Figure out what you think you had and we'll try to find you one. Won't be the same of course as Grandpa's but close as you can get.
They are great for young kids and old kids like me too.

I mentioned earlier that I bought a SS Remington 22 when I was eleven. I think it was a model 30, but I'm not entirely sure. I still have it up in the attic, so I suppose I could climb up there and take a look. The last time I saw it, I was amazed at the condition. I had put a oiled piece of paper towel in each end of the barrel when I left home at sixteen to go to college, so the bore was clean and unmarked. Since I carried it around with me nearly every day, I was surprised that there were practically no scratches or rust on the stock or blueing.

Well, just for you Bawanna, here are pictures of my Remington, circa 1950's, Model 514 single shot 22 rifle. It shoots short, long, and long rifle rounds. It's in amazing shape considering it was carried all over the place by a 11 - 16 year old boy, and then stored in a closet or attic for almost 60 years.

That's absolutely gorgeous and in incredibly good shape. That's the type of thing that blows my dress up round my ears. Much more exciting than most of this new fangled stuff we get excited about these days.
I've been prowling the auctions for old Mossbergs lately but slipped in a Remington and a Winchester now and again too.
No shortage of 22's at my house, at least until that damn sink hole came along, sad day for sure.

O'Dell those 514's are bring 200 and better on some of the auctions. I noticed one still cheap like 80 bucks but they had put a Ruger 10/22 barrel on it?

Y'all got me to wondering, I did a quick search and I believe Grandpa had a Remington Model 33, there are a couple on gun broker for under $200, but kinda rough shape.

I paid $11.95 for it new over 60 years ago. Anyway, since it was my first gun, not counting BB guns, I wouldn't sell it. If I polish off a little surface rust off the bolt, it will be almost like new.

My fascination with firearms was when I was about 10 years old. That's 60 years ago. My first rifle was a Remington bolt action. My first pistol was a Ruger 22 auto n the same time period at 18 years old. I took off running with the love of shooting and guns after that and I haven't slowed down at all. I have to drive almost 40 miles to the range in Ames, Ia and I've been doing that for 45 years.

In your sandals I'd never sell it either. Those bolts polish up real pretty I discovered on my last old Mossberg. Ended up doing them all.
It's in fine shape, should be out where folks can enjoy looking at it.
