I know that in Kalifornia, a Real ID is needed to buy a gun or ammo. Is this going to be true for other States as well?

I do have a real ID, but I sure hope it will never be required to buy ammo or a long gun.

Not for ammo in my state. There would be a revolt.
For guns you must have an ID but if you have a valid concealed carry permit no additional FBI check is required. Fill out the form and take your new toy home. You passed a background check for your carry permit.

Hell No!
Leave that place immediately...
I don't here think so, Colorado, but our DLs and my Passport Card both meet Real ID standards.

The feds claimed that many states DL were too easy to fake. They had to implement several features to be declared "real ID". SC drug their heels and wanted the feds to pay for the conversion. Our DL's will no longer be accepted as ID for planes, federal builidings etc... The state finally caved, and now are issuing real ID's. We have until 2020 to comply. It is pain in the arse. You have to bring pretty much the same documentation you need for a passport, to get your driver's license. Many folks don't have or never had all the documents, so they still give out "regular" licenses too. They just aren't good enough for Federal ID, but good enough to drive on. My mom has friends without birth certificates, born on the farm way back when.
Anyway, it's supposed to be some anti-terrorist thing. Real ID's are supposed to be tougher to get or fake, but I think some of the liberal states are passing them out, so does it really matter?

According to the Department of Father...er, I mean Homeland Security, a Real ID is not required for the following:
Entering Federal facilities that do not require a person to present identification
Voting or registering to vote
Applying for or receiving Federal benefits
Being licensed by a state to drive
Accessing Health or life preserving services (including hospitals and health clinics), law enforcement, or constitutionally protected activities (including a defendant's access to court proceedings)
Participating in law enforcement proceedings or investigations
Seems to me that anything relating to the 2nd Amendment is a "constitutionally protected activity", but that's just me. It's interesting to note that Real ID is a mandate on certain federal agencies...not on the states themselves. Participation and compliance is supposedly voluntary for the individual states; however, after all of the extensions and appeals have run out, the affected federal agencies (including the TSA) cannot accept ID from non-compliant states. By going about it in this manner, I think the feds were trying to avoid claims that Real ID is an unfunded mandate.

Most of the people I know who live in Kalifornia want out, but more or less have stay due to jobs, family and various other reasons. Personally, I would move to any number of foreign countries before I would live there. Helluva shame, since geographically it's such a beautiful state.

California lawmakers....

The Real ID act is a Federal push to enhance the reliability of identification documents used for some purposes, primarily travel. It sets standards akin to Passports for other identification to be accepted, such as verification of personal data like birth, citizenship, residence, etc, as well as document dublication/forgery prevention measures. States do not have to comply with these enhanced measures, and most didn't, but if they don't their DLs and ID cards will not be accepted for affected Federal purposes.
Side notes...acceptable identification for voting purposes is under state purview, not federal.

Once Real ID is in place nationwide we will have no choice as that will be all that there is.

When I recently renewed my DL there was a deep line for Real ID. Hadn't heard of it our would have gotten it on my DL. Requires birth certificate, utility bill and bunch of other stuff. Since it's CA, I might be able to get it over the phone.... just saying.

Real ID is in place nationwide. Other than states that have completely bundled it into their DLs, you don't have to get one if you don't need it for the Fed defined purposes. Also should note, if you have a passport you're already Real ID compliant and a passport is, or should be, acceptable proof of birth and citizenship when applying for other forms of ID.
Personally, whiile I still wish for the old days and ways, times being what they are I'm understand the need for and am a supporter of Real ID for the Act's stated uses and purpose.

I had to renew Texas DL this year (wife too) and they requiered all the "new" documentation. I guess we now have "real ID's", but I didn't know I did that until just now...
Thanks folks, for filling in the blanks... I guess. I might fly again someday, so I guess that's okay.
My CHL will let me buy any of the firearms I wish to buy.

You need the new "Real ID" to enter Federal buildings. I have never been in one, so don't know how common the need is.
If I'm charged with a federal crime, but don't have read ID, does that mean I can't enter the federal penal system? Hmmm.....

They'll give you a special one in that case... it includes your fingerprints, DNA and bodily markings or scars along with your name, photo, etc. One you don't want. Very expensive.

I live just north of L.A. and just renewed my driver license. I opted for the “real ID”, and had to bring my passport (a certified birth certificate would have worked as well), my social security card, and a utility bill showing my address (I used my cell phone bill). As I am over 70, I also had to pass both a vision test and a knowledge test. From what I saw, most of the people who tripped up lacked a social security card.
Out of curiosity...would some other form of SSA documentation, such as a benefit statement/tax document, or pre new issue Medicare card be accepted in lieu of a SS card?

It appears that an SAA 1099, W2 or pay stub would be acceptable, as long as your full Social Security number is displayed.
Thanks! The requirement had set me to thinking...while I know where mine is, what if I couldn't lay hands on that battered bit of paper issued to me 61 years ago when I was 14?

One would think a military retired ID, that does have one's SSN on it, would suffice as proof of one's SSN.
However, I work for Colorado Parks and Wildlife every summer and every spring I have to fill out the same paperwork I filled out the previous spring. I also need to bring my DL and my SS card. My military ID they will not accept.
Go figure. An ID issued by the US Gov't not accepted by a department within a state gov't.

You bet. Now don't take what I say for gospel where you live, in that requirements might vary from state to state...I don't know. Like you, I still have my original Social Security card, but I think it's fairly easy to get a replacement should the need arise.

It really was simple curiosity. I'm in Colorado and my last year issued DL meets Real ID standards. But CA's last couple/few decades increased penchant for wierdness fascinates me.
