MK40 recoil spring guide rod is getting a chubby !

I picked up a previously owned MK40 last week and it runs great. The previous owner had installed a stainless steel guide rod assembly. After putting 200 rounds down range I noticed the guide rod was protruding about 3/8” past the front of the slide. It had been just slightly ( maybe 1/32”) past the end when I starting shooting. I disassembled and could find nothing wrong. Reassembled,still protruding. Has anyone had this happen? It still functions perfect! Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Sears:Amflag2:

If so, my first thought would be to see if the threaded end is screwed completely in.

Without the springs and sleeve, I believe it would be the same as the one you pictured.

Thanks for the info Greg. I locked the slide back and checked the guide rod,it was loose. Thanks

Well,I took the guide rod apart,sprayed with cleaner to remove any oil,applied blue locktite and reassembled. While doing this I noticed the screw for the slide stop spring was loose and did the same to it. Going to the range on Wednesday and will see what happens!

Made it to the range today shooting 50 rounds of WWB 180 grain, checked the guide rod and it was back out about 1/32”. What’s next? This,as most of you might know does not cause a functioning problem. The pistol has performed flawlessly. Again I’ll say,this is one of the most accurate pistols I have shot!

You might try the blue Loctite again or move on to red Loctite (I've removed screws treated with it by using a heat gun on them).

There is also the stock recoil spring assembly to consider.

1564115640This is my first attempt at posting photos. I’m not sure how this is going to turn out! Looking at the guide rod,before I shot this last 50 rnds, it was just about flush with the fro t of the slide.I know I could use something stronger than blue lock tight but I would like to be able to take it apart at a later date when time to replace the springs if ever necessary.

Sorry for the delay in follow-up report but, life happens ! The blue loctite did not hold.I probably will try the red next.In the last picture was after 50 rounds fired.

My Kahr stainless guide rod always gave me trouble.
Switched to Wolff steel recoil spring and guide rod.
Problem Solved :cool:

Here is another wolf guide rod recommendation. I recently picked up a used MK40 that had probably still had the original guide rod and spring set, it was in pretty rough shape. Swapped out the rod and springs, now the action is as smooth as butter. Midway was the cheapest I found for the guide rod and spring set. The set comes with a replacement striker spring as well. Not bad for $33, plus they had 7rd .40 mags in stock.

I went with the weight listed as standard, 20.5 lbs if memory serves. I wanted standard function.
