View Full Version : What I did on summer vacation.

I just returned from 10 days over on the right side of the state. First week was kind of spotty with a little rain, a lot of wind and overcast, perfect for day drinking and range time.
Unlike past years where I asked others to go along and one thing led to another and never went, this year I didn't wait. When I got the urge, I invited family or if they were out fishing or whatever I just went.
I made 4 trips to the range, solo, alone, nobody to tell me what to do, criticize my every move, question my choices, in a word it was awesome.
Let me find some pictures.
Me and Ma on the road over, you can see the anxious look on my face.

As I mentioned, the range was quite crowded me being the sole occupant on all 4 occasions. Don't know why the picture is sideways but whenever I try to fix it I get a headache, so just tilt your head to the side and it will look completely normble.

This is the pistol range, about 100 yards, the rifle range was 300.

The Canik and the MRI 1911 both leaned to the left a bit.
This is the Canik at probably 15 yards.

And the MRI

I was lucky enough to have a couple punches and a small hammer so I was able to adjust the windage back at the resort and found I was pretty close the following trip.

Can't seem to find the MRI picture but it's very similar.

Our saga continues
I swapped a Russian SKS for a Remington 540X 22 Target rifle about 5 years ago but never got around to shooting it. I did this trip.
Amazingly accurate. I never touched the sights and the picture speaks for itself. Pretty impressive with me running the trigger.
If my arms were longer and my shoulders not so wore out I'd pat myself on the back on this one. Awesome rifle and I'll shoot it every chance I get.

Of course in the heat over there one doesn't want to dehydrate so between visits libations were secured and partook of.

I spent the morning cleaning all the dirty toys, I enjoyed that too, took my time, no rush.

The super accurate 22 rifle.

Along with my Armalite AR that I only had about 20 rounds through before.

It did ok too especially for me. I added a magnifier just before going over and shot with and without, it really helped out beyond 30 yards or so.

The MRI that I ruined last year, somehow got a 40 in the mag, case went down the barrel and a 45 behind it. I loaded the mag but another guy was shooting. It had to go back to Kahr for a new barrel, they refinished it, I didn't like the bead blast so I sanded it down a bit and polished it some.
Very happy with it now and just as accurate as it's blued brother. Real shooter.

The always present PM45. It and my new T9 were back seat in the accuracy department as I fully expected. No comparison in size to the others.
I had zero issues with the new T, I take that back, it did neglect to lock back on empty with all 3 mags. I suspect this will fix itself with more rounds and doesn't concern me really anyhow. For some reason I was getting some vertical stringing with the T especially at first, it got better and better.
Again I just need to bond with it a bit more and more frequently. Definitely a keeper for me.
I caught a bunch of trout and a few bass. Didn't get out in the boat but a couple times as my guts have been aggravating me for awhile, so only a few bass but my people caught tons, heck of a bass fry. Deep fried in beer batter, don't get no better than that.
Well back to the grind stone for me on Monday, probably do my side gig at Tractor Supply on Saturday if I feel like it.
Considered this a taste of retirement and it tasted pretty good.

Forgot I also shot a Hi Standard 22 pistol a 104 model Super Matic that I got a few months ago and it was a tack driver too. It tended to shoot high and I screwed the rear sight all the way down, found I still needed a 6 oclock hold but it put out some small groups. No balks or issues with it either.
I did have one 1911 mag come undone on me, a factory MRI mag. I was loading the 3rd round and the 3 rounds and the follower departed. I recovered the 3 rounds easy enough but the follower I believe is orbiting the earth as we speak. Not a trace of it. Wide open clean concrete area and a thorough search turned up nothing. Don't know if it broke or what? Oh well I rarely run anything but Wilson mags anyhow so again, I'm not concerned.

Seems to me to be a perfect trip you and the MRs had. Hope to see the great NW again someday myself.

Nice vacation! Thanks for sharing. We're going to my 55th HS Reunion, C. of '64, next week... with stops on the way and back at casinos on the coast... comps in lodging, play, and food. We might wind up paying a lot, though.
I just finally cleaned my 3 guns from the range trip with my .308. My P380 gets rusty around the slide lock pin and the spring and washer. I'll have to watch that.
I still have to put away my gear from the range... Wifey just asked when I was going to get that out of the way... in the dining room. I told her, dang! I just finally cleaned the guns and put them away... jeeesh!
:D

Road trips with Jocko are real slow, can't pass a farm without looking for sheep.

Very nice! You verbally painted pictures well, and those targets spoke for themselves. That was some fancy shooting there! Not a rifle guy too much but hope I could be half as accurate at 40 yards as you were with the Remington.

That Remington and my Smith and Wesson 41 I think could print groups like that left unattended in the safe.
I'm not sure I even had anything to do with it.
I realized that I messed up, I thought I'd brought my 41 but I'd brought my Colt Match Target Woodsman, it's been balking and I brought it to see if I'd cured it. Thought it was the 41 which I know to be a runner and I didn't shoot it.
At least with the exception of my new BBQ Vaquero everything that's gonna get shot has got shot so the guys at work can quit ribbing me for having 7 or 8 unfired new guns for a few years.
I was able to shoot my Garand again and I put a new front sight I had ordered. I intended to build it up some as it shoots quite high. The new sight was a little taller and while still high it was considerable better. Got to enjoy the clip flying out when empty. Can't do that at most ranges over here, one round at a time.....

No witnesses...when I'm alone at the range, I get groups like that also.:boink:
