what type of hearing protection does everyone use? I have some cheap earmuffs from Wal Mart, but they hurt the sides of my head when I have on eye protection. My dad has some Silenco muffs that I like a little better, I think they have softer cushioning maybe.

I am beginning to have hearing problems (49 year old ears combined with too many loud air tools around my body shop are to blame) and want to save what hearing I have left.

I double up, using ear plugs and 28db muffs, with a Remmington label, made by Radians, Inc. Together they work well.

My wife and I each have a set of Peltor 7S. We've also got a set of the peltor 6S around the house somewhere. I highly recommend them. Being able to hear normal conversation while wearing hearing protection enhances range safety, IMO.

I like the double up advice. I do that at the indoor range for sure.

I use the peltor electronics also, I used to double up all the time when I could still hear a little. Now that I don't do audio and need the hearing aid the electronics lets me hear at least a little talk while I'm shooting, although not real good but no fault of the ear muffs.
My kid told me a gal propositioned me after I gave her some help but I didn't have a clue what she said, nodded, smiled and rolled away. Story of my life.

I use the same set up Ripley does, I don't double up unless I'm playing with the big toys like a 50 BMG, or some that are high pitched. I also use the foam earplugs plenty often, and am not bashful about it at work or any where else I think I'll come across something my ears don't like.

I got a cheap Guide Gear set that works fine with shotguns and hand claps, but doesn't seem up to the job for centerfire pistols at close range, even with earplugs. I can't find my regular 29dB ear muffs... left at skeet range fiddling with the new ones??
I need to get a pair of those 33dB muffs... and I'll still use 29dB plugs as well.

Oh its hearing protection...I got to get some of those electronic muffs for sure....I worked in a factory when I was a youngster and the machinery was slightly louder than a plane crashing into a train wreck and didn't think I needed any hearing protection but now I regret my ignorance...For now I'm going to start with ear plugs under muffs...Last trip to the range it was over 100 degrees and I wasn't wearing foam earplugs under the muffs... I made the mistake of wiping sweat off my face and moved the muff off one ear just as the guy in the next lane let off a 12 gauge shotgun blast and let me tell you, that HURT!!!...:eek:

Funny story related to hearing protection.
Years ago BC. (Before Chair) I went to a local outdoor range to shoot my TC Contender in 30-30 cal. I went to the check in window and asked if he wanted me on the rifle range or the pistol range as it depended on who the rangemaster was as to where they wanted me. He said there was only one guy up on the pistol range and to go up there.
Off I went. When I arrived there was another rangemaster chatting with a shooter down in the members only section. They were not shooting just BSing. The range master said I could go ahead and hang a target. I started to go turn the bell on as required by range rules and he yelled at me that he was tired of listening to the bell and just go, he would watch. I told him I wasn't comfy violating the rules but if he said so. Off I went.
I laid out my stuff thinking he would leave shortly but he stayed put. He finally asked if I was gonna shoot or what? I explained that I had noticed he wasn't wearing hearing protection and that I had a large gun and didn't want to hurt his ears. In true rangemaster, macho man style he said heck boy my ears been burned so many times you can't hurt em. I said ok but still drug my feet. He then started to leave as I had the gun out, and the barrel broke open. I grabbed a 30-30 shell by the very rim so he could see it clearly and dropped it in the chamber, he started to walk faster. He had about 20' to go to get around a corner baffle, I slammed the action shut and brought the gun up as if to aim, now he was running as fast as his fat little body would go, I didn't even aim, just watched him bounce off the wall and turn the corner just as I let her go. He popped his head around the corner and said you almost got me you little bastard! I told him that had I wanted to get him I could have easily done so. He agreed and we came away with a new perspective. Course then the member had to come down and we spent an hour blasting with my contender. Didn't see the rangemaster after that.
