Not a Shadow II, but I like it.

Have had a hankering for a CZ Shadow II for a while now.

I don't shoot competitions, but I do enjoy hitting the steel plate range.

Last week, I was just about to order the CZ when my home central air unit took a dump. It was in the 90's all week, so I just took it on the chin and had an entire new system installed, due to the almost 30 year age of the old system.

Ouch. Gonna have to put off the CZ for this year, but my LGS made me a screamin' good deal on a SIG XFive.

Now that the XFive Legion is out, I got the XFive, Romeo 1 red dot, 2 extra 21rd mags, holster, and double mag carrier for less than the price of a Legion XFive or a Shadow II.

Sight in day tomorrow...

I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to swing a centerfire X-Five, but until I can I will shoot this.

I have only shot about 200 rounds of Walmart/Crosman ammo, so far, and have determined that I need to try some better ammo. The attached photo is a 5-shot group at 5 yards. From what I have read, I think the gun is more accurate than this, if I figure out which ammo it likes. It is a blow-back pistol, so it’s not going to be as accurate as many other target pistols, but I can hit a 6” gong (cast-iron skillet) at 30 yards consistently, which is better than I thought it would do.

After a temporary delay, I finally got to the range with my Xfive.

I was waiting for a new guide rod and spring set from Armory Craft to arrive. On my first range trip, I used Blazer Brass 124gr ammo, and experienced many failures to return completely to battery. It was ony about 1/8" out of battery, and I didn't want to risk a kaboom if it fired out of battery.

I got some advice from a guy on the facebook Sig P320 owners group. He said this was a common issue with new Xfives, and that loading up the mags fully and letting them sit for a few days would help. He also suggested shooting different ammo during the break in, as Blazer is relatively low powered. Once broken in after a few hundred rounds, it should shoot Blazer fine. This was due to the tight tolerances that make this gun so accurate. Sound familiar Kahr owners?

I also researched getting a full size 1911 guide rod and a set of different weight recoil springs. The XFive uses 1911 size springs and guide rod. I saw on facebook that Armory Craft just released a tuning kit that included a stainless guide rod, and 12,14,and 15 lb springs. This allows you to match performance to better suit your range ammo. I ordered a kit, and got it in a few days. The stock recoil spring is rated at 14 lbs.

I chose the 15 lb spring to give the slide more "ooomph" to return to battery, and grabbed my fully loaded mags that had been sitting for several days with some hotter ammo in them - Sig's Elite Performance 124 gr FMJ. I also had to sight in the Romeo1 red dot, so I took a few hundred rounds of ammo.

The gun shot flawlessly this trip, and I had the Romeo1 dialed in at 10 yards before I finished the first 21 rd magazine. I moved the target out to 20 yards, and this was the result of the next 21 rd mag. I think I'm (temporarily) cured of my Shadow II craving...
