View Full Version : Unloading a PM40
I like to keep my guns unloaded when in the safe.
When you unload a PM40, I find the pulling back the slide takes a lot of force.
I'm concerned, that my grip on the slide might slip before I get the loaded round out. The slide would then slam forward.
If I keep my finger off the trigger, is there a chance that the gun might fire causing an AD?
I figure on loading the gun, when I take the gun out of the safe in the morning, I can pull back the slide on the empty gun, lock it back, then put in the mag, and then release the slide lock. I figure that would be a safe way to load the gun.
Any thoughts? Please don't have 10 people say I should keep the gun loaded when in the safe. Not doing that.

Locking the slide back and using the slide release is Kahrs recommended method to load.
If you pull the slide back to unload and it slams forward it will not fire "IF" "AS LONG" as you don't have your finger on the trigger.
Can't help myself but let me be the first to recommend leaving it loaded but not in the safe. I have grandkids at the house from time to time so if I'm not wearing my gun I keep it up high and even though they are 2 and 5 we have already had gun safety discussions. First and foremost, don't touch grandpa's guns period unless you ask and he lets you which he will gladly do anytime, empty and under supervision of course.

sudo,
I have a cardboard box (~ 10" x 10" x 13") packed tight with old catalogs and magazines (periodicals), that I point my pistols at when I am "administratively handling" my pistol in my house--in case of AD/ND. The catalogs are "standing", cover-to-cover in the box. I point my pistol at the center of what would be the covers of the catalogs.
One of my friends has a galvanized steel pail filled with sand, that he uses for the same purpose.
FWIW.

That's what the internal safety is for, to keep the firing pin from hitting the primer without the trigger being pulled. If you've had it apart, you'd see how safe it is....very. I had an AD with my Ruger 22/45 a couple years ago. Went through the wall about foot below my TV. I live alone, so no one was in danger except me! That won't happen again. If I get a gun out of the safe for play, I leave the ammo and mags in the safe.

I use the bear hug method to unload a live round so I don't slip.
Do you know another way to load the firearm?
Slingshot it.
Easy on a glock or P238, harder on my Kahr.

Slingshot it.
I'm left-handed. Slingshotting is the only way I've ever loaded my K9.

Either way, you still have to put a mag in, and pull back the slide. Only way I know of......………………………..

The real question here which is most dangerous a loaded gun In a locked safe or unloading and loading said gun daily.

To be clear on my procedure, no loaded guns go in my safe ever. But my carry gun or often times guns don't go in the safe, they always go in the same place high enough that young people can't reach or see them. Those do not get unloaded but checked before holstering each morning.
Actually in my man cave I don't keep any guns loaded, except of course the ones I'm wearing.

All of my firearms are loaded and ready at all times, whether in a safe or not. There is NEVER a question of are they loaded or not. That's also because compared to others, my firearm ownership is no match.:p

Above post is very true. He is from California. He has probably been told many times of the horrors that can happen with a loaded gun in a locked safe. Lol
Sudo, if you aren't comfortable loading or unloading your gun it would be a very good idea to get some training and practice until you are comfortable. Also, if you are loading and unloading daily you should do a quick internet search on "bullet setback".

To unload your pistol, remove loaded mag, insert an EMPTY mag, rack the slide, slide locks back and chambered round will be out of the chamber :yo:
