View Full Version : Recommendations for cutting a dovetail into a slide?

Hello All,
I'd like to have a dovetail cut for the front sight on my Kahr S9 if affordable, any recommendations? I would like to upgrade the sights to the XS Big Dots or even Standard Dot if plausible. Does anyone have any experience with those? Just FYI, I tried the Trijicon Bright and Tough night sights but I had real issues picking up the front sight because the white isn't prominent enough.

Thanks,
Ralph

I personally love the XS Sights. I have a standard set on a 1911 and a Big Dot Set on my PM45. They work very well for me.

I just put a Gold Bead front and U Notch on another 1911 and it just isn't near as good for me.

The XS sights work equally well in day light or low light, many night sights aren't too good in daylight.

For the S9 I believe I'd go Big Dot. XS explains it as the Standard dot is for folks that haven't figured out how well the big dot works and having used them I now agree.
You may lose a tiny bit of precision but they are quick.

Thanks Bawanna. Yes, I just had real difficulties seeing the white circle on the Trijicon Bright and Tough during the day. My eyes just are not quite what they used to be. The sights were fine at night though. The Big Dots look perfect for me and quick acquisition.

Can you recommend a competent company that can mill the dovetail?

Thanks,
Ralph

I have the XS Big Dots on my HK. Best sights that I've ever used. Front sight could be even a bit larger, it would be better at night. I'm thinking about putting one on the front of my revolver...……………..very fast acquisition.

I don't have a recommendation on where to get a dovetail cut. Robar is no longer doing gun stuff apparently so they are out.

There's lots of places but none I have first hand experience with. Be good to have one on retainer for when the need arises.

Hey Bawanna and Berettabone,
Just out of curiosity, did y'all install the rear tritium night sight combo also or did you go with the front tritium and rear painted sight combo? Do you have an opinion whether the front tritium is sufficient enough or does the combo make a real difference?
Lastly, did you go with the yellow or orange color?

Thanks,
Ralph

I have the combo. Not sure about the color your asking about. Mine are white with a green center.

Ditto here, when I got mine the yellow and orange were not an option.

The front with the proper size rear would work well. I've grown fond of U notch rears as offered by 10-8 and now a few others.
I get along fine with the shallow V rear but really like a U notch. With that big bold dot up front just about anything would work.

I was trying to remember that Ahlmans place, it was on the tip of me tongue just wouldn't come out.

I've never dealt with them but I know you have VIP status and they have your colors on hand at all times.

XS will cut the slide and install their sights...
Or at least they use to. Have not been over to their shop this year and I have not looked at their web site lately. I will say that they have done me right in my dealings with them. The XS shop is about a 20min drive from my house and is a little east of downtown Fort Worth Tx.
