View Full Version : Out to Pasture

Tomorrows the big life changing day. Last day at the PD, pass through the gate to the pasture. At least I don't have to climb over the fence to get there. Not easy for a derelict in a wheelchair ya know.
Been kind of slacking last couple days as they dump my stuff on other people, kind of hard to act like I really care since I told them 2 months ago I was retiring and gave them plenty of time to transition but they wait till the last 4 days. Oh well.
Wife is working for a couple more years so on those days I'll be able to do whatever I want. (I hope).
Maybe more time to make sawdust and get stuff done around the place.
Probably take me a few weeks before I don't park in my spot and realize I don't have a key to open the gate.
That will look foolish huh?
And of course more time to harass my pals here on Kahrtalk. Should be good.
Not fond of living off the government teat but it works for them that didn't earn it so guess I shouldn't feel too guilty.
I've stocked up on Top Ramen, Hot Dogs, and best quality dog food if things get tight.

Nothing better than doing what you want, when you want. Greatest part of living in this country. You may be surprised how easy the transition might be.:)

Lifes good. Enjoy it, sir. My time is coming next year.

Retired a little more than a year now. I love every single day of it. For the first time since I was 17 I don't have to worry about following someone else's agenda and timeline.
Enjoy Colonel, I'm sure you deserve it. And as berettabone said, it's not hard to acclimate to it. Every day is a gift, as well as a reward for working all of your life before this! This is a different kind of entitlement. The positive kind with the definition that predates today's. You earned this through your working life. Never think otherwise.

Awesome. I want to join the out to pasture crowd one day. Will likely be about 10 more years for me though unless something changes that plan one way or another.

I'm not much into Soap Opera's, I hated being sick and turning the TV on, some weird stuff on during the day. I'd best leave the thing off or watch recorded Wagon Train, Rifleman and Gunsmoke.

Two kinds of retirees. Those that can find nothing to do, and those that can never complete all they have to do. I think I know which group you will be in. Congratulations!!!
Congratulations on your retirement.
Somehow, I don't think you'll ever be bored. Now you can really enjoy all the fun toys you've accumulated over the years.
It's almost range time!!!

I THINK THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF RETIREES. THOSE WHO CAN COUNT AND THOSE WHO CANT. ANYWAY CONGRATS COLONEL. WISH YOU THE BEST AND HOPE YOUR RETIREMENT IS EVERTHING YOU HOPE IT WILL BE. I HAVE 2 MORE YEARS TO GO AND THEN I CAN JOIN YOU.

I'm good up to 10 without taking off my shoes. What does that do for me?
The two years will fly by, its the final couple weeks that seem to drag on forever.
Dealing with Medicare and Social Security I'd suggest you start now getting that set up. They move at the speed of molasses or Heinz catsup in the bottle.
They keep saying how easy it is, I didn't find it easy at all and I hope they come through. Guess I just don't trust the government teat.

I have found out that I work much more now than I did before I retire. My wife has a never ending honey-do list for me that I'm sure I'll never get done.
Congrats and enjoy!

I can't wait to retire, to get out of this profession. But I also dread it since there won't be much money to live on and I'll probably be the type who can't find anything to do. I'll be the "man of leisure" above, hopefully with socks that stay up.
My wife will find plenty for me to do, but there's no need to nag me every six months to hang that shelf or paint that bathroom.

Now there you are retired, remember there are three prices for every gun you purchase.
1. The price you paid.
2. The price you told her you paid.
3. The price you paid when she found out what you actually paid.

Well so far Walmart isn't accepting my door greeter policies. I told them I wanted to be a door greeter/thief catcher.
They balked when they saw my equipment list.
Corporations, sheesh, must be all democrats, want you to do stuff nekked, not even a big knife.

Never forget the top 3 rules for old guys... 1. Never miss an opportunity to pee. 2. Never fart unless you're sitting on the toilet. 3. Never waste an erection.

Number 1, for sure, but just BE CAREFUL with "farting", and finally, I'm not familiar with #3... diabetes II meds and prostate cancer treatments, etc. :(

Congrats on the successful bailout of the work force. I'm sure the parachute you under isn't golden, but I hope it's a decent grade of silk with some shiny silver spray paint on it...
My wife has been retired 5 years now and she loves it. I'm still a few years out (too young yet, but I'm not crying) I can however see the light at the end of the tunnel and its is not an oncoming train.
I told my wife that she could not commit to any big changes or take on any big projects/tasks for folks, for at least the first six months. I figured she needed time to find her own "new normal" and she agrees it was the right call. Drift with the current for a bit Sir and see where life is taking you!
Do be sure to enjoy that first MONDAY without the job to go to... just because you can.
Peace

Congrats! I'm almost 3 years into my retirement, and I can't for the life of me figure how I had the time to go to work every day...always so much to do, and so little time in the day. I hope that its the same for you, and that you get the chance to fill those days doing things you enjoy. I rather liked my 34-year career, but a bad day of retirement is better than a good day at work.

That's actually exciting stuff! You'll probably be much busier than when you were working. Since you can choose to do whatever you want, and you have so much you like to do, just wow! I'm imagining a whirlwind here. I tried to retire and ended up with a couple of new jobs. I'm hoping it sticks next time. Congrats Colonel!!!!

I didn't take to retirement very well. Slept when I was tired and got up when I wasn't. Didn't matter the time. Went stir crazy. I'm doing better now though.

I find myself kind of torn, I'm all over the map tinkering with stuff and trying to get it done but then find myself kind of figuring if I get this done what will I do tomorrow. I think I got plenty of stuff to do for many many tomorrows though, just kind of a thing in the back of the head.
Saturday again today.

I retired from DoC in July myself and have been adjusting, just as you are finding out.
It's just a different sort of busy.
Again congratulations, and enjoy yourself.
